1 Acaz tinha 20 anos quando começou a reinar, e reinou em Jerusalém por dezesseis anos. Ao contrário de seu antepassado Davi, não fez o que era certo aos olhos do Senhor. 2 Em vez disso, seguiu o exemplo dos reis de Israel. Fez ídolos de metal para adorar Baal, 3 queimou incenso no vale de Ben-Hinom e chegou a sacrificar os próprios filhos no fogo. Desse modo, seguiu as práticas detestáveis das nações que o Senhor havia expulsado da terra diante dos israelitas. 4 Ofereceu sacrifícios e queimou incenso nos santuários idólatras, nos montes e debaixo de toda árvore verdejante.

5 Por isso, o Senhor, seu Deus, entregou Acaz nas mãos do rei da Síria, que o derrotou e levou muitos de seu povo para o exílio em Damasco. Também o entregou nas mãos do rei de Israel, que derrotou Acaz e matou muitos de seus soldados. 6 Em um só dia, Peca, filho de Remalias, matou 120 mil soldados de Judá, todos guerreiros experientes, pois haviam abandonado o Senhor, o Deus de seus antepassados. 7 Então Zicri, um guerreiro de Efraim, matou Maaseias, filho do rei, Azricão, oficial encarregado do palácio do rei, e Elcana, o segundo no comando depois do rei. 8 Os soldados de Israel capturaram duzentas mil mulheres e crianças de Judá e tomaram enormes quantidades de despojos, que levaram para Samaria.

9 Odede, profeta do Senhor, estava em Samaria quando o exército de Israel voltou. Saiu ao encontro deles e lhes disse: "O Senhor, o Deus de seus antepassados, estava irado com Judá e o entregou em suas mãos, mas vocês foram longe demais e os mataram com fúria que chegou até os céus. 10 Agora, pretendem escravizar esse povo de Judá e de Jerusalém. E quanto a seus próprios pecados contra o Senhor, seu Deus? 11 Ouçam-me e mandem de volta esses prisioneiros que vocês capturaram, pois são seus parentes. Tenham cuidado, pois a ira ardente do Senhor se voltou contra vocês!".

12 Então alguns dos líderes de Israel — Azarias, filho de Joanã, Berequias, filho de Mesilemote, Jeizquias, filho de Salum, e Amasa, filho de Hadlai — confrontaram os homens que voltavam da batalha. 13 "Não tragam os prisioneiros para cá!", disseram. "Se o fizerem, aumentaremos nossos pecados e nossa culpa diante do Senhor. Nossa culpa já é grande, e a ira ardente do Senhor se voltou contra Israel!"

14 Então os guerreiros libertaram os prisioneiros e colocaram os despojos diante dos líderes do povo. 15 Os quatro homens já mencionados por nome vieram à frente e deram roupas dos despojos aos presos que estavam nus. Vestiram-nos, deram-lhes sandálias, providenciaram comida e bebida para eles e aplicaram bálsamo sobre seus ferimentos. Puseram sobre jumentos aqueles que estavam fracos e levaram todos os prisioneiros de volta para seu povo em Jericó, a cidade das palmeiras. Depois, voltaram para Samaria.

16 Nessa época, o rei Acaz pediu ajuda ao rei da Assíria. 17 Os exércitos de Edom tinham invadido Judá outra vez e levado prisioneiros. 18 Os filisteus haviam atacado cidades nas colinas de Judá e no Neguebe. Conquistaram e ocuparam Bete-Semes, Aijalom e Gederote, além de Socó, Timna e Ginzo, com seus povoados. 19 O Senhor humilhou Judá por causa de Acaz, rei de Judá, pois ele havia incentivado o povo a pecar e havia sido inteiramente infiel ao Senhor.

20 Quando Tiglate-Pileser, rei da Assíria, chegou, atacou Acaz em vez de ajudá-lo. 21 Acaz tomou objetos de valor do templo do Senhor, do palácio real e das casas de seus oficiais e os entregou ao rei da Assíria como tributo, mas de nada adiantou.

22 Mesmo nesse tempo de grande dificuldade, o rei Acaz foi ainda mais infiel ao Senhor. 23 Ofereceu sacrifícios aos deuses de Damasco que o haviam derrotado, pois disse: "Visto que esses deuses ajudaram o rei da Síria, também me ajudarão se eu lhes oferecer sacrifícios". Em vez disso, porém, eles foram a causa de sua ruína e da ruína de todo o Judá.

24 Acaz pegou os utensílios do templo de Deus e os despedaçou. Trancou as portas do templo do Senhor para que ninguém pudesse adorar ali e fez altares idólatras em cada esquina de Jerusalém. 25 Colocou santuários idólatras em todas as cidades de Judá para queimar incenso a outros deuses. Com isso, provocou a ira do Senhor, o Deus de seus antepassados.

26 Os demais acontecimentos do reinado de Acaz e tudo que ele fez, do início ao fim, estão registrados no Livro dos Reis de Judá e de Israel. 27 Quando Acaz morreu e se reuniu a seus antepassados, foi sepultado em Jerusalém, mas não no cemitério dos reis de Judá. Seu filho Ezequias foi seu sucessor.

1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. He didn’t do that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes, like David his father, 2 but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and also made molten images for the Baals. 3 Moreover he burned incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burned his children in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom Yahweh cast out before the children of Israel. 4 He sacrificed and burned incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

5 Therefore Yahweh his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria. They struck him, and carried away from him a great multitude of captives, and brought them to Damascus. He was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who struck him with a great slaughter. 6 For Pekah the son of Remaliah killed in Judah one hundred twenty thousand in one day, all of them valiant men, because they had forsaken Yahweh, the God of their fathers. 7 Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the king’s son, Azrikam the ruler of the house, and Elkanah who was next to the king. 8 The children of Israel carried away captive of their brothers two hundred thousand women, sons, and daughters, and also took away much plunder from them, and brought the plunder to Samaria. 9 But a prophet of Yahweh was there, whose name was Oded; and he went out to meet the army that came to Samaria, and said to them, "Behold, because Yahweh, the God of your fathers, was angry with Judah, he has delivered them into your hand, and you have slain them in a rage which has reached up to heaven. 10 Now you intend to degrade the children of Judah and Jerusalem as male and female slaves for yourselves. Aren’t there even with you trespasses of your own against Yahweh your God? 11 Now hear me therefore, and send back the captives that you have taken captive from your brothers, for the fierce wrath of Yahweh is on you." 12 Then some of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who came from the war, 13 and said to them, "You must not bring in the captives here, for you intend that which will bring on us a trespass against Yahweh, to add to our sins and to our guilt; for our guilt is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel."

14 So the armed men left the captives and the plunder before the princes and all the assembly. 15 The men who have been mentioned by name rose up and took the captives, and with the plunder clothed all who were naked among them, dressed them, gave them sandals, gave them something to eat and to drink, anointed them, carried all the feeble of them on donkeys, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brothers. Then they returned to Samaria.

16 At that time king Ahaz sent to the kings of Assyria to help him. 17 For again the Edomites had come and struck Judah, and carried away captives. 18 The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the lowland and of the South of Judah, and had taken Beth Shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Soco with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and also Gimzo and its villages; and they lived there. 19 For Yahweh brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel, because he acted without restraint in Judah and trespassed severely against Yahweh. 20 Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria came to him and gave him trouble, but didn’t strengthen him. 21 For Ahaz took away a portion out of Yahweh’s house, and out of the house of the king and of the princes, and gave it to the king of Assyria; but it didn’t help him.

22 In the time of his distress, he trespassed yet more against Yahweh, this same king Ahaz. 23 For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus which had defeated him. He said, "Because the gods of the kings of Syria helped them, I will sacrifice to them, that they may help me." But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel. 24 Ahaz gathered together the vessels of God’s house, cut the vessels of God’s house in pieces, and shut up the doors of Yahweh’s house; and he made himself altars in every corner of Jerusalem. 25 In every city of Judah he made high places to burn incense to other gods, and provoked Yahweh, the God of his fathers, to anger.

26 Now the rest of his acts, and all his ways, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 27 Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem, because they didn’t bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel; and Hezekiah his son reigned in his place.
