1 Quando Josafá, rei de Judá, voltou em segurança a seu palácio, em Jerusalém, 2 o vidente Jeú, filho de Hanani, saiu ao encontro dele. "Por que o rei ajuda os perversos e ama os que odeiam o Senhor?", perguntou-lhe Hanani. "Por causa disso, o Senhor está muito irado com você. 3 Mas ainda há algo de bom em você, pois removeu os postes de Aserá de toda a terra e buscou a Deus de todo o coração."

4 Josafá morava em Jerusalém, mas saía para visitar o povo por todo o território, desde Berseba até a região montanhosa de Efraim, a fim de animar todos a voltarem para o Senhor, o Deus de seus antepassados. 5 Nomeou juízes na terra, em todas as cidades fortificadas, 6 e lhes disse: "Sejam cuidadosos! Lembrem-se de que não estão julgando para agradar as pessoas, mas para agradar o Senhor. Ele estará com vocês sempre que derem um veredito. 7 Temam o Senhor e julguem com integridade, pois o Senhor, nosso Deus, não tolera injustiça, nem parcialidade, nem suborno".

8 Em Jerusalém, Josafá nomeou alguns levitas, sacerdotes e chefes de famílias de Israel para julgarem os casos que envolvessem a lei do Senhor e questões civis. 9 Estas foram suas ordens para eles: "Ajam sempre no temor do Senhor, com fidelidade e coração íntegro. 10 Toda vez que chegar até vocês uma causa de seus compatriotas israelitas de outras cidades, seja de homicídio, seja de outra violação da lei, dos mandamentos, dos decretos ou dos estatutos de Deus, advirtam-nos para que eles não pequem contra o Senhor, a fim de que a ira dele não venha sobre vocês e sobre eles. Se agirem desse modo, estarão livres de culpa.

11 "Amarias, o sumo sacerdote, terá a última palavra nos casos relacionados ao Senhor. Zebadias, filho de Ismael, líder da tribo de Judá, terá a última palavra em todas as questões relativas ao reino. Os levitas os ajudarão nesses trabalhos. Sejam corajosos no cumprimento de seus deveres, e que o Senhor esteja com aqueles que agirem corretamente!".

1 Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem. 2 Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, "Should you help the wicked, and love those who hate Yahweh? Because of this, wrath is on you from before Yahweh. 3 Nevertheless there are good things found in you, in that you have put away the Asheroth out of the land, and have set your heart to seek God."

4 Jehoshaphat lived at Jerusalem; and he went out again among the people from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim, and brought them back to Yahweh, the God of their fathers. 5 He set judges in the land throughout all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city, 6 and said to the judges, "Consider what you do, for you don’t judge for man, but for Yahweh; and he is with you in the judgment. 7 Now therefore let the fear of Yahweh be on you. Take heed and do it; for there is no iniquity with Yahweh our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes."

8 Moreover in Jerusalem Jehoshaphat appointed certain Levites, priests, and heads of the fathers’ households of Israel to give judgment for Yahweh and for controversies. They returned to Jerusalem. 9 He commanded them, saying, "You shall do this in the fear of Yahweh, faithfully, and with a perfect heart. 10 Whenever any controversy comes to you from your brothers who dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and ordinances, you must warn them, that they not be guilty toward Yahweh, and so wrath come on you and on your brothers. Do this, and you will not be guilty. 11 Behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of Yahweh; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, in all the king’s matters. Also the Levites shall be officers before you. Deal courageously, and may Yahweh be with the good."
