1 O Senhor disse mais a Moisés: "Prepara duas placas de pedra como as primeiras, e escreverei sobre elas os mesmos mandamentos que estavam nas outras que quebraste. 2 Prepara-te de manhã para subires ao monte Sinai e vem à minha presença no cimo da montanha. 3 Ninguém virá contigo e não haverá mais ninguém em sítio nenhum da montanha. Não permitas sequer que ovelhas e bois apascentem perto do monte."

4 Então Moisés talhou duas lápides semelhantes às primeiras, levantou-se cedo e subiu ao monte Sinai, tal como o Senhor lhe dissera, levando consigo as duas placas.

5 O Senhor desceu numa nuvem e ficou ali junto dele, 6 passando na sua frente e anunciando-lhe o significado do seu nome: "Eu sou o Senhor, o Deus misericordioso e compassivo, lento a zangar-me e rico em demonstração constante de amor e verdade. 7 Eu manifesto este permanente amor para com milhares, perdoando a sua iniquidade, transgressões e pecado. Recuso considerar o culpado como inocente, ficando indiferente às suas culpas, as quais castigarei nos filhos e nos netos, até à terceira e até à quarta geração."

8 Moisés inclinou-se perante o Senhor e adorou-o.

9 "Se é verdade", disse ele, "que achei graça aos teus olhos, ó Senhor, peço-te então que vás connosco até à terra prometida. Sim, este povo é rebelde e duro. Perdoa a nossa iniquidade e os nossos pecados e aceita-nos como teus, como tua propriedade."

10 O Senhor respondeu-lhe: "Pois bem, farei uma aliança convosco! Farei milagres tais que nunca antes foram vistos sobre a Terra e todo o povo de Israel verá o poder do Senhor, pois obra tremenda é o que farei contigo. 11 A vossa parte neste contrato é obedecer a todos os meus mandamentos; e eu lançarei fora os amorreus, os cananeus, os hititas, os perizeus, os heveus e os jebuseus.

12 Não façam, de maneira nenhuma, qualquer espécie de aliança com os povos da terra para onde vão, porque seria para vocês uma armadilha fatal. 13 Em vez disso, deverão destruir os seus altares pagãos, quebrar os obeliscos que eles adoram e derrubar os seus postes ídolos de Achera. 14 Não deverão adorar outro deus senão o Senhor, porque é um Deus que requer uma lealdade absoluta e uma devoção exclusiva.

15 Não façam tratado de paz de espécie alguma com o povo que lá vive, porque são uns prostituídos espiritualmente, cometendo adultério contra mim ao sacrificarem aos seus deuses. Se estabelecerem relações amigas com eles e se alguém vos convidar a ir na sua companhia adorar o ídolo, facilmente irão com ele. 16 Da mesma forma, aceitarão as suas filhas, que adoram outros deuses, para que casem com os vossos filhos e os vossos filhos cometerão adultério para comigo ao adorar os deuses das suas mulheres.

17 Não façam para vocês ídolos de metal fundido.

18 Não se esqueçam de comemorar a festa dos pães sem fermento, durante sete dias, de acordo com as minhas instruções e nas datas designadas em cada ano, no mês de Abibe. Foi nesse mês que deixaram o Egito.

19 Todo o menino, o primeiro filho de um casal, será meu; assim também os animais, vacas ou cordeiros. 20 Mas o primogénito de um burro poderá ser substituído por um cordeiro. Se alguém decidir não substituí-lo, terá de lhe quebrar o pescoço. Resgatarás, por meio de uma oferta, todos os primogénitos dos teus filhos. Ninguém aparecerá vazio perante mim sem trazer uma oferta.

21 Mesmo quando tiverem de lavrar os campos ou durante as colheitas, trabalharão apenas seis dias e ao sétimo descansarão.

22 Devem lembrar-se de celebrar a festa das semanas, que é a do início da ceifa do trigo e a festa das colheitas, no fim do ano. 23 Em cada uma destas três ocasiões, todos os homens e moços de Israel deverão comparecer perante o Senhor, o Deus de Israel. 24 Ninguém atacará ou conquistará a vossa terra quando vierem à presença do Senhor, vosso Deus, durante essas três vezes no ano. Pois eu expulsarei as nações na vossa frente e alargarei os vossos domínios.

25 Não deverão empregar pão levedado nos meus sacrifícios. Nada do sacrifício do cordeiro da Páscoa deverá ser guardado até à manhã seguinte. 26 Trarão à casa do Senhor, vosso Deus, o melhor dos primeiros frutos da colheita de cada ano.

Não cozerão um cabritinho no leite da sua mãe."

27 O Senhor disse mais a Moisés: "Escreve as leis que acabo de referir, porque representam os termos da minha aliança contigo e com Israel."

28 Moisés esteve ali na montanha com o Senhor durante quarenta dias e quarenta noites, e em todo esse tempo não comeu nem bebeu. Foi então nessa altura que Deus escreveu as palavras da aliança, os dez mandamentos, nas placas de pedra.

29 Ao regressar da montanha com as placas escritas, Moisés não se deu conta de que o seu rosto resplandecia, por ter estado na presença de Deus. 30 Por causa desse brilho na sua face, Aarão e o povo de Israel receavam aproximar-se dele. 31 Mas Moisés chamou-os para junto de si, e Aarão mais os chefes da congregação vieram e falaram com ele. 32 Depois todo o povo também se aproximou; e deu-lhes os mandamentos que o Senhor lhe comunicara lá na montanha.

33 Quando Moisés acabou de lhes falar, pôs um véu sobre a sua face. 34 Mas sempre que entrava para estar na presença do Senhor tirava o véu. E quando saía transmitia ao povo todas as instruções que Deus lhe dera. 35 Assim, o povo via o seu rosto resplandecer. Mas logo após, tornava a pôr o véu até voltar a falar com o Senhor.

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakest. 2 And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount. 3 And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.

4 And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.

5 And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. 6 And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, 7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. 8 And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped. 9 And he said, If now I have found grace in thy sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray thee, go among us; for it is a stiffnecked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for thine inheritance.

10 And he said, Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the LORD: for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee. 11 Observe thou that which I command thee this day: behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 12 Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee: 13 But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves:*34.13 images: Heb. statues 14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: 15 Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice; 16 And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods. 17 Thou shalt make thee no molten gods.

18 The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, in the time of the month Abib: for in the month Abib thou camest out from Egypt. 19 All that openeth the matrix is mine; and every firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male.*34.19 sheep: or, kid 20 But the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb: and if thou redeem him not, then shalt thou break his neck. All the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem. And none shall appear before me empty.*34.20 lamb: or, kid

21 Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest: in earing time and in harvest thou shalt rest.

22 And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year’s end.*34.22 year’s end: Heb. revolution of the year

23 Thrice in the year shall all your men children appear before the Lord GOD, the God of Israel. 24 For I will cast out the nations before thee, and enlarge thy borders: neither shall any man desire thy land, when thou shalt go up to appear before the LORD thy God thrice in the year. 25 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning. 26 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother’s milk. 27 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write thou these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and with Israel.

28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.*34.28 commandments: Heb. words

29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. 30 And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him. 31 And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them. 32 And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount Sinai. 33 And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face. 34 But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded. 35 And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
