1 Então Moisés disse: "Eles não vão acreditar em mim nem fazer o que lhes disser. Vão dizer-me que o Senhor nunca me apareceu!"

2 "Que é isso que tens na mão?", perguntou-lhe o Senhor. "Uma vara de pastor."

3 "Lança-a ao chão." Moisés assim fez e a vara tornou-se serpente e ele até fugia dela. 4 Então o Senhor tornou a dizer-lhe: "Pega-lhe pela cauda." E a serpente tornou-se vara de novo. 5 "Faz isto", disse-lhe o Senhor, "e hão de dar-se conta de que o Senhor, o Deus dos vossos antepassados, Abraão, Isaque e Jacob, te apareceu verdadeiramente.

6 Agora mete a mão dentro da roupa, junto ao peito." Ele assim fez e quando tornou a tirá-la estava toda branca de lepra. 7 Mas ele disse-lhe: "Volta a metê-la no peito." E desta vez a mão veio de novo sã como antes!

8 "Se não acreditarem depois do primeiro milagre, hão de crer ao segundo. 9 E se não te aceitarem depois destes dois sinais, vai ao Nilo buscar água e derrama-a na terra seca. Esta água tornar-se-á em sangue."

10 Moisés disse ainda ao Senhor: "Mas Senhor, eu não sou bom orador, nunca fui, nem mesmo agora depois de me teres falado. Sou de fala presa, tenho a língua pesada."

11 "Quem foi que fez o homem falar?", perguntou-lhe o Senhor. "Não fui eu, o Senhor? Não sou eu quem faz as pessoas falarem ou não, ouvirem ou não, verem ou não? 12 Então vai e faz o que eu te disse, porque te ajudarei a falar como deve ser. Eu próprio te direi o que deves falar."

13 "Ó Senhor, peço-te que mandes outra pessoa em vez de mim!"

14 Desta vez o Senhor zangou-se: "Pois bem, o teu irmão Aarão, o levita, sabe falar, não é isso? Acontece que ele vem cá ver-te e ficará feliz em estar contigo. 15 Sendo assim, comunico-te o que lhe hás de dizer e vos ajudarei a dizer o que devem e ensinar-vos-ei o que fazer. 16 Ele será o teu porta-voz junto do povo. Serás para ele como a voz de Deus, ensinando-lhe o que deve falar. 17 Não deixes de levar essa tua vara com que hás de realizar os sinais que te indiquei."

18 Moisés voltou para casa e disse ao sogro: "Preciso regressar ao Egito, de ir ter com os meus irmãos e parentes, pois nem sei sequer os que ainda vivem." Jetro respondeu-lhe: "Vai descansado e em paz!"

19 Antes de deixar Midiã o Senhor ainda disse a Moisés: "Não tenhas receio de voltar ao Egito, porque todos os que te queriam matar já morreram." 20 Então, com a mulher e os filhos montados em jumentos, partiu para o Egito, segurando na mão a vara de Deus.

21 "Quando chegares ao Egito vai ter com o Faraó e faz os milagres que te falei." Disse-lhe mais o Senhor: "Eu endurecerei o seu coração e não permitirá que o povo saia. 22 Então lhe dirás: Israel é o meu filho mais velho, diz o Senhor. 23 Mandei-te que o deixasses ir para que me adorasse, mas recusaste; por isso, fica sabendo que tirarei a vida ao teu filho mais velho."

24 Durante a viagem de Moisés e da sua família, e numa altura em que tiveram de parar de noite para descansar, o Senhor apareceu a Moisés e ameaçou matá-lo. 25,26 Então Zípora, sua mulher, pegou numa faca, circuncidou o seu filho e atirou a pele aos pés de Moisés dizendo: "Que marido sangrento te tornaste!" Então o Senhor deixou de o ameaçar.

27 Ora o Senhor tinha dito a Aarão: "Vai ao encontro de Moisés no deserto." Aarão assim fez e encontrou-se com Moisés em Horebe, no monte de Deus, tendo-se saudado muito afetuosamente. 28 Moisés disse a Aarão o que o Senhor os mandara fazer, o que deviam dizer e os milagres que tinham de realizar diante do Faraó.

29 Regressaram ambos ao Egito e logo convocaram os anciãos do povo de Israel para uma assembleia. 30 Aarão relatou-lhes tudo o que o Senhor tinha dito a Moisés, e este realizou os milagres na presença deles. 31 Os anciãos creram que Deus os tinha enviado. Ao ouvirem que o Senhor ia intervir a seu favor, porque observara o seu sofrimento e decidira salvá-los, alegraram-se e inclinaram as suas cabeças para adorar Deus.

1 And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee. 2 And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod. 3 And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. 4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand: 5 That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.

6 And the LORD said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow. 7 And he said, Put thine hand into thy bosom again. And he put his hand into his bosom again; and plucked it out of his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh. 8 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign. 9 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe also these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou takest out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.*4.9 shall become: Heb. shall be and shall be

10 And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.*4.10 eloquent: Heb. a man of words*4.10 heretofore: Heb. since yesterday, nor since the third day 11 And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD? 12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say. 13 And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send.*4.13 wilt: or, shouldest 14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart. 15 And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do. 16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God. 17 And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do signs.

18 And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father in law, and said unto him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return unto my brethren which are in Egypt, and see whether they be yet alive. And Jethro said to Moses, Go in peace.*4.18 Jethro: Heb. Jether 19 And the LORD said unto Moses in Midian, Go, return into Egypt: for all the men are dead which sought thy life. 20 And Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them upon an ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Moses took the rod of God in his hand. 21 And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go. 22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn: 23 And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn.

24 And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the LORD met him, and sought to kill him. 25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.*4.25 sharp…: or, knife*4.25 cast…: Heb. made it touch 26 So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision.

27 And the LORD said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And he went, and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him. 28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of the LORD who had sent him, and all the signs which he had commanded him.

29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel: 30 And Aaron spake all the words which the LORD had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people. 31 And the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.
