1 No dia 24 desse mês, o povo israelita tornou congregar-se para outra celebração: desta vez jejuaram e vestiram-se de pano de saco, cobrindo a cabeça de pó. 2,3 Os israelitas separaram-se dos estrangeiros, e a Lei de Deus foi lida em voz alta durante duas ou três horas. Durante outras tantas horas confessaram os seus pecados e os dos seus antepassados. Toda a gente prestava culto ao Senhor, seu Deus. 4 Alguns dos levitas encontravam-se sobre o estrado para invocar em voz bem alta ao Senhor, seu Deus: Jesua, Bani, Cadmiel, Sebanias, Buni, Serebias, Bani e Quenani.

5 Então os chefes dos levitas fizeram um apelo ao povo: "Levantem-se e louvem o Senhor, vosso Deus, pois ele vive por toda a eternidade! Louvem o poder do seu glorioso nome! Ele é maior do que podemos dizer ou pensar!"

(Os responsáveis por esta parte do culto eram Jesua, Cadmiel, Bani, Hasabneias, Serebias, Hodias, Sebanias e Petaías.)

6 "Só tu és o Senhor! Tu fizeste o céu e o mais altos dos céus, com todo o seu exército celestial, a Terra e os mares e tudo o que neles existe. Toda a vida que existe é mantida por ti; toda a criação te adora.

7 Tu és o Senhor Deus que escolheu Abrão e o trouxe de Ur, na Caldeia, mudando-lhe o nome para Abraão. 8 Como viste que te era fiel no seu íntimo, fizeste com ele um pacto em como lhe darias, a ele e aos seus descendentes, a terra dos cananeus, hititas, amorreus, perizeus, jebuseus e girgaseus; agora cumpriste as tuas promessas. Tu és sempre fiel em tudo o que prometes.

9 Viste a aflição dos nossos antepassados no Egito; ouviste o seu clamor, lá na terra para além do mar Vermelho. 10 Mostraste sinais e prodígios ao Faraó e ao seu povo, pois conhecias a brutalidade com que nos tratavam; a tua fama tornou-se conhecida até hoje. 11 Fendeste o mar, para que o teu povo pudesse atravessar em terra seca e depois destruíste os seus inimigos nas profundezas do mesmo mar; afundaram-se como pedras em águas revoltas. 12 Conduziste os nossos antepassados por meio duma nuvem em forma de coluna, durante o dia, e de noite por meio dum pilar de fogo, para que soubessem o caminho por onde seguir.

13 Desceste sobre o monte Sinai, falaste com eles desde os céus e deste-lhes bons mandamentos, estatutos justos, verdadeiras leis, 14 incluindo as leis respeitantes ao santo sábado, e ordenaste através do teu servo Moisés que lhes obedecessem. 15 Deste-lhes o pão dos céus, quando estavam com fome, e água dum rochedo quando estavam com sede; ordenaste que avançassem e conquistassem a terra que tinhas prometido dar-lhes.

16 Mas os nossos antepassados eram altivos e teimosos e recusaram dar ouvidos aos teus mandamentos. 17 Recusaram obedecer e atentar aos milagres que fizeste em favor deles; em vez disso, revoltaram-se e designaram um líder para os reconduzir de novo à escravidão do Egito. Contudo, tu és um Deus de perdão, sempre pronto a esquecer e a ter misericórdia, lento em irar-se, cheio de amor e compaixão; por isso, não os abandonaste, 18 apesar de eles terem feito um ídolo em forma de bezerro e proclamado: ‘Este é o vosso Deus! Foi ele quem vos trouxe do Egito!’ Na verdade, pecaram de muitas maneiras.

19 No entanto, na tua enorme paciência não os abandonaste no deserto! A coluna de nuvem continuou a guiá-los dia após dia e a coluna de fogo a mostrar-lhes o caminho de noite. 20 Enviaste o teu bom Espírito para os instruir e nunca deixaste de lhes dar o pão do céu e água para saciar a sua sede. 21 Durante 40 anos sustentaste-os no deserto; não tiveram falta de nada durante esse tempo; a sua roupa não envelheceu e os seus pés não incharam!

22 Ajudaste-os a conquistarem grandes reinos e muitos povos, colocaste o teu povo em cada canto da terra; possuíram a terra do rei Siom de Hesbom e do rei Ogue de Basã. 23 Multiplicaste-os como as estrelas do céu e trouxeste-os para a terra que prometeste aos seus antepassados; 24 Entraram nela e tomaram posse dela. Derrotaste diante deles os seus habitantes, os cananeus, e entregaste-os nas mãos do teu povo. Este podia tratar como quisesse os reis e os povos daquela região! 25 O teu povo capturou cidades fortificadas e terras férteis; tomaram casas cheias de boas coisas, com cisternas, vinhas, olivais e muitas árvores de fruto; comeram, fartaram-se e rejubilaram com as tuas bênçãos.

26 Apesar de tudo, foram desobedientes e rebeldes contra ti; atiraram para trás das costas a tua Lei, mataram os profetas que lhes diziam para se converterem a Deus e fizeram muitas outras coisas terríveis. 27 Por isso, entregaste-os aos seus inimigos. No entanto, nos tempos de angústia eles clamaram a ti e ouviste-os dos céus; na tua grande misericórdia, enviaste-lhes libertadores, para os livrarem daqueles que os oprimiam.

28 Porém, quando tudo parecia ir bem, o teu povo voltou ao pecado e de novo permitias que os seus inimigos os capturassem. Mesmo assim, sempre que o teu povo se voltou para ti e te implorou por socorro, tu ouviste-os dos céus e na tua grande misericórdia salvaste-os!

29 Castigaste-os para os levar a dar ouvidos à tua Lei, mas não deram ouvidos aos teus mandamentos, pelos quais viverá quem os cumprir, e continuaram a pecar. 30 Durante muitos anos, foste paciente e enviaste os teus profetas para os advertirem contra os pecados que praticavam; mas eles não fizeram caso e de novo entregaste-os às nações pagãs que os conquistaram. 31 Contudo, na tua grande misericórdia não os destruíste completamente, nem os abandonaste para sempre. Que Deus clemente e compassivo tu és!

32 Agora, ó grande e tremendo Deus, que guardas a aliança e o teu amor, não tenhas em pouca conta todas as aflições por que atravessámos, nós, os nossos reis, governantes, sacerdotes, profetas e antepassados, desde os dias em que os reis da Assíria triunfaram sobre nós até agora. 33 Sempre que nos castigaste, foste justo; nós pecámos tanto que os castigos que recebemos foram inteiramente merecidos. 34 Os nossos reis, governantes, sacerdotes e antepassados não quiseram obedecer à tua Lei, nem atentar para os teus avisos. 35 Apesar dos muitos bens que lhes deste e da terra espaçosa e fértil que lhes entregaste, não te adoraram nem se converteram das suas más ações.

36 Por isso, hoje somos escravos na terra que deste aos nossos pais! Escravos no meio de tanta abundância! 37 A riqueza desta terra passou para as mãos de reis que tu permitiste que nos conquistassem, por causa dos nossos pecados; dominam sobre os nossos corpos e sobre o nosso gado; servimo-los conforme a sua vontade, sendo grande a nossa miséria."

38 Por tudo isto, nós fazemos um compromisso firme por escrito. Nós e os nossos governantes, levitas e sacerdotes colocamos os nossos nomes nesta aliança.

4 Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.*9.4 stairs: or, scaffold 5 Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise. 6 Thou, even thou, art LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all things that are therein, the seas, and all that is therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee. 7 Thou art the LORD the God, who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham; 8 And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous: 9 And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heardest their cry by the Red sea; 10 And shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day. 11 And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters. 12 Moreover thou leddest them in the day by a cloudy pillar; and according to thy manifold mercies thou gavest them saviours, who saved them out of the hand of their enemies. 28 But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly: 34 Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them. 35 For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works. 36 Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it: 37 And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress. 38 And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it;
