1 No sétimo mês*8.1 Mês de Tisri ou Etanim. Entre a lua nova do mês de setembro e o mês de outubro., todo o povo se concentrou na praça em frente à porta da Água, e pediu ao escriba Esdras que lhes lesse o livro da Lei de Moisés, que o Senhor tinha dado a Israel.

2 Esdras, que era também sacerdote, trouxe o livro da Lei e apresentou-o diante de toda a congregação, que era composta por homens, mulheres, crianças e todos os que podiam entender a leitura. 3 Ali na praça, em frente à porta da Água, leu desde manhã cedo até ao meio-dia. Todos estavam atentos à leitura da Lei. 4 Esdras estava num estrado de madeira, feito propositadamente para aquela cerimónia, para que toda a gente pudesse vê-lo enquanto lia. À direita de Esdras encontravam-se Matitias, Sema, Anaías, Urias, Hilquias e Maaseias; à sua esquerda estavam Pedaías, Misael, Malquias, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacarias e Mesulão. 5 Quando abriu o livro, toda a gente se levantou e todos os que tinham idade para compreender prestavam muita atenção ao que ouviam.

6 Esdras louvou o Senhor, o grande Deus, e todo o povo disse: "Amém! Assim seja!", levantando as mãos; depois curvaram-se e adoraram o Senhor com os rostos em terra.

7 Os levitas Jesua, Bani, Serebias, Jamim, Acube, Sabetai, Hodias, Maaseias, Quelita, Azarias, Jozabade, Hanã e Pelaías dirigiram-se ao povo que permanecia nos seus lugares, 8 para explicar o sentido da passagem que estava a ser lida. Todo o povo chorava a ouvir as palavras da Lei.

9 Então o sacerdote Esdras e eu próprio, Neemias, como governador, e os levitas que me assistiam, lhes dissemos-lhes: "Não chorem num dia como este! Hoje é um dia consagrado ao Senhor, vosso Deus. 10 Vão comer uma boa refeição", disse-lhes, "e enviem presentes aos que estão necessitados. Não estejam tristes, porque a alegria do Senhor é a vossa força!"

11 Também os levitas sossegavam o povo: "Não se ponham assim! Não chorem! Este dia deve ser de santa alegria e não de amargura!" 12 Todo o povo saiu então para comer e beber e enviar presentes; foi uma ocasião de grande celebração, pois puderam ouvir e compreender as palavras de Deus.

13 No dia seguinte, os líderes, os sacerdotes e os levitas juntaram-se a Esdras para continuarem a debruçar-se sobre a Lei com mais detalhe. 14 Enquanto a estudavam, deram-se conta de que o Senhor dissera a Moisés que o povo devia viver em tendas durante a festa dos tabernáculos, no sétimo mês*8.14 Mês de Tisri.. 15 Deus tinha dito igualmente que deveria ser feita uma proclamação em todas as localidades, particularmente em Jerusalém, dizendo ao povo que fossem até aos montes, que trouxessem ramos de oliveira, zambujeiro, murta, palmeira e figueira, e que fizessem cabanas.

16 Todo o povo assim fez; foram buscar ramos, cortaram-nos e fizeram cabanas nos telhados das suas habitações, nos pátios das casas, no pátio do templo, na praça por detrás da porta da Água e na praça da porta de Efraim. 17 As pessoas viveram nessas cabanas durante os sete dias das festividades, e toda a gente estava cheia de alegria; tal coisa nunca tinha sido feita desde os tempos de Josué, filho de Num.

18 Esdras leu o livro da Lei de Deus cada dia da celebração, do primeiro ao último; no oitavo dia, houve uma assembleia solene de encerramento, como requeria a Lei.

And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground. 7 Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place. 8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

9 And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.*8.9 the Tirshatha: or, the governor 10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength. 11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved. 12 And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.

13 And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law.*8.13 to understand…: or, that they might instruct in the words of the law 14 And they found written in the law which the LORD had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month:*8.14 by: Heb. by the hand of 15 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.

16 So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim. 17 And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness. 18 Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according unto the manner.*8.18 a solemn…: Heb. a restraint
