1 Um dia, chegaram de Jerusalém uns fariseus e mestres da lei religiosa para falarem com Jesus, e notaram que alguns dos seus discípulos não cumpriam com os rituais que os judeus geralmente observam antes de comer

3 (Porque os judeus, sobretudo os que são fariseus, nunca comem enquanto não lavarem muito bem as mãos, conforme o exigem as antigas tradições; e, quando voltam da rua para casa, devem sempre lavar-se deste modo antes de tocar em qualquer comida. Este é apenas um entre muitos exemplos das leis a que se agarraram, tais como a cerimónia de purificação de vasilhas, panelas e pratos.)

5 Os fariseus e mestres da lei religiosa perguntaram-lhe, pois: Porque não seguem os teus discípulos os nossos antigos usos e comem sem se lavarem cerimonialmente?

6 Jesus respondeu: Fingidos que vocês são! Bem disse o profeta Isaías acerca de vocês:

7 'Este povo honra-me com palavras,mas o seu coração está longe de mim. É em vão que me prestam culto, porque ensinam doutrinasque não passam de preceitos de homens.'

8 E Isaías bem tinha razão! Porque vocês desprezam as ordens expressas de Deus para porem em seu lugar as vossas próprias tradições.

9 Rejeitam a lei de Deus para manter as vossas próprias tradições.

10 Por exemplo: Moisés ordenou-vos da parte de Deus: 'Respeita o teu pai e a tua mãe

11 Contudo, vocês afirmam que é permitido a um homem desprezar os seus pais necessitados se lhes disser: 'Não posso ajudar-vos, porque o que seria para vocês já o dei a Deus'

13 Assim ofendem a lei divina para defender as vossas tradições criadas por homens. E isto é só um exemplo, porque há muitos mais.

14 Então chamou de novo a multidão para que viesse ouvir: Escutem todos e procurem entender

15 O que contamina o homem não é o que ele come, mas, sim, o que ele diz e faz!t

16 Quem tem ouvidos para ouvir ouça.

17 Depois de deixar aquele povo, entrou numa casa, e os discípulos perguntaram-lhe o que queria dizer com as palavras que acabara de pronunciar.

18 Nem vocês entendem?, perguntou-lhes. Não percebem que o que comem não vos faz mal à alma? Pois a comida não passa pelo coração, mas apenas pelo estômago e depois sai para fora. (Ao dizer isto, Jesus mostrou que todas as espécies de comida são aceitáveis.)

20 E acrescentou: O que se passa no espírito é que contamina. Porque do íntimo é que vêm os maus pensamentos de desejo carnal, roubo, assassínio, adultério, cobiça, maldade, engano, indecências, inveja, calúnia, orgulho e coisas insensatas. Todas essas coisas más procedem do íntimo da pessoa; são elas que vos contaminam e vos tornam indignos de Deus.

24 Depois, saiu da Galileia e foi para a região de Tiro e Sidom, mas não conseguiu esconder que estava ali; como de costume, a notícia da sua chegada depressa se espalhou.

25 Imediatamente foi procurado por uma mulher cuja filha estava possuída por um demónio. Como tinha já ouvido falar em Jesus, veio agora e caiu-lhe aos pés, pedindo muito que livrasse a filha do poder do demónio. Tratava-se de uma siro-fenícia, uma estrangeira, e por isso desprezada pelos judeus. Jesus disse-lhe: Primeiro tenho que ajudar os da minha família, os judeus. Não está certo tirar a comida aos filhos e lançá-la aos cães.

28 Ela replicou: Isso é verdade, Senhor, mas até os cachorrinhos debaixo da mesa recebem os restos dos pratos dos que são filhos.

29 Está certo! Respondeste tão certo que já curei a tua filhinha.

30 E, quando ela chegou a casa, encontrou a filha sossegada, na cama; o demónio tinha-se ido embora.

31 De Tiro foi para Sidom, voltando em seguida ao Mar da Galileia pelo caminho das Dez Cidades.

32 Trouxeram-lhe um surdo que tinha um defeito na fala, e todos lhe pediam que pusesse as mãos sobre o homem e o curasse. Então Jesus, afastando-o da multidão, pôs os dedos nos ouvidos do homem e, cuspindo, tocou-lhe na língua com a sua saliva. Levantando os olhos para o céu, suspirou e ordenou: Abram-se! No mesmo instante, o homem começou a ouvir e a falar perfeitamente.

36 Jesus recomendou à multidão que não espalhasse a notícia, mas, quanto mais proibia, mais o facto se divulgava. Porque toda a gente sentia enorme espanto, dizendo a cada instante: Tudo o que faz é maravilhoso; os surdos ouvem e os mudos falam!

1 And the Pharisees and certain of the Scribes who have come from Jerusalem gather themselves together unto him;

2 and, observing certain of his disciples, that, with defiled hands, that is unwashed, they are eating bread,

3 For, the Pharisees, and all the Jews, unless with care they wash their hands, eat not, holding fast the tradition of the elders;

4 and coming from market, unless they sprinkle themselves, they eat not,and, many other things, there are, which they have accepted to hold fastimmersions of cups and measures and copper vessels

5 and so the Pharisees and the Scribes, question, himFor what cause do thy disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but, with defiled hands, eat bread?

6 But, he, said unto themWell, prophesied Isaiah concerning you, ye hypocrites, as it is writtenThis people, with the lips do honour me, while, their heart, far off, holdeth from me,

7 But, in vain, do they pay devotions unto me, teaching for teachings, the commandments of men;

8 Having, dismissed, the commandment, of God, ye, hold fast, the tradition, of men.

9 And he was saying to themWell, do ye set aside the commandment of God, that, your own tradition, ye may observe;

10 For, Moses, saidHonour thy father and thy mother, andHe that revileth father or mother, let him, surely die,

11 But, ye, sayIf a man shall say to his father or his mother, Korban! that is, A gift, whatsoever, out of me, thou mightest be profited,

12 no longer, do ye suffer him to do, aught, for his father or his mother,

13 cancelling the word of God by your tradition which ye have delivered. And, many such similar things, are ye doing!

14 And, again calling near the multitude, he was saying unto themHearken to me, all! and understand:

15 Nothing, is there, from without the man, entering into him, which can defile him; but, the things which, out of the man, come forth, are the things that defile the man.

17 And, when he entered into a house from the multitudes, his disciples began to question him as to the parable;

18 And he saith unto themThus, are, ye also, without discernment? Perceive ye not that, nothing, from without, entering into the man, can defile him;

19 because it entereth not into his heart, but into his stomach, and, into the draught, is passedpurifying all foods?

20 And he was sayingThat which, out of the man, cometh forth, that, defileth the man;

21 For, from within, out of the heart of men, the base designs, come forth,fornications, thefts,

22 murders, adulteries, covetousnesses, knaveries, deceit, wantonness, an evil eye, profane speaking, foolishness,

23 all these wicked things, from within, come forth, and defile, the man.

24 And, from thence arising, he departed into the bounds of Tyre and Zidon . And, entering into a house, he was wishing, no one, to know it, and yet could not escape notice,

25 but, straightway, a woman hearing about him, whose daughter had an impure spirit, she came and fell down at his feet.

26 Now, the woman, was a Grecian, a Syrophoenician by race,and she was requesting him that, the demon, he would cast forth out of her daughter.

27 And he was saying to herSuffer, the children, first, to be fed; for it is not seemly to take the bread of the children, and, unto the little dogs, to cast it;

28 but she answered and saith to himYea, Lord! and yet, the little dogs under the table, do eat of the crumbs of the children;

29 and he said to herBecause of this word, go thy way, the demon hath gone forth out of thy daughter;

30 and, departing unto her house, she found the child laid prostrate on the couch, and the demon gone forth.

31 And, again coming forth out of the bounds of Tyre, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the bounds of Decapolis.

32 And they bring to him one deaf and stammering, and beseech him that he would lay upon him his hand.

33 And, taking him away from the multitude apart, he thrust his fingers into his ears, and, spitting, touched his tongue;

34 and, looking up into the heaven, sighed deeply, and saith unto himEphphatha! that is, Be opened!

35 and his ears opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed,and he was speaking correctly.

36 And he charged them that they should be telling, no one,but, as much as to them he gave charge, they, exceeding more abundantly, were making proclamation.

37 And, superabundantly, were they being struck with astonishment, sayingWell, hath he, all things, done,both, the deaf, he causeth to hear, and, the dumb, to speak.
