1 Ah, terra que fica lá para cima do Nilo, e onde embarcações à vela deslizam ao longo das margens!2 Terra que envia embaixadores em luxuosos navios, pelo Nilo a baixo! Velozes mensageiros voltarão para ti, ó forte e ilustre nação, temida em toda a parte, uma nação que conquista e destrói, cuja terra o Nilo superior divide . Esta é a mensagem que te é dirigida:3 Quando se levantar o estandarte de combate sobre a montanha, que todo o mundo o saiba! Quando tocar a trombeta do ataque a Israel que toda a gente preste atenção! Porque o Senhor disse-me o seguinte: Estarei a olhar serenamente desde a minha morada, como o calor do Sol a meio do dia, ou como a nuvem de orvalho no calor da ceifa.5 Mas, antes que comecem o ataque, na altura em que os vossos planos estão a amadurecer como as uvas na vinha, então ele vos cortará como com uma tesoura de podar; cortará os sarmentos e os ramos.6 O vosso poderoso exército será deixado morto no campo, para as aves de rapina e os animais selvagens. Os abutres terão de comer durante todo o Verão; todos os animais da terra terão ossos para roer o Inverno inteiro.7 Mas o tempo virá em que essa forte e poderosa nação, o terror de todos longe e perto, essa nação de conquistas e de destruição, cuja terra o rio divide, virá trazer ofertas ao Senhor dos exércitos celestiais, a Jerusalém, o lugar em que ele pôs o seu nome.

1 Ah, the land of the rustling of wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia;2 that sends ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of papyrus on the waters, [saying], Go, you{+} swift messengers, to a nation tall and smooth, to a people awesome from their beginning onward, a nation that metes out and treads down, whose land the rivers divide!3 All you{+} inhabitants of the world, and you{+} who stay on the earth, when an ensign is lifted up on the mountains, see{+}; and when the trumpet is blown, hear{+}.4 For thus has Yahweh said to me, I will be still, and I will behold in my dwelling-place, like clear heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.5 For before the harvest, when the blossom is over, and the flower becomes a ripening grape, he will cut off the sprigs with pruning-hooks, and the spreading branches he will take away [and] cut down.6 They will be left together to the ravenous birds of the mountains, and to the beasts of the earth; and the ravenous birds will summer on them, and all the beasts of the earth will winter on them.7 In that time will a present be brought to Yahweh of hosts from a people tall and smooth, even from a people awesome from their beginning onward, a nation that metes out and treads down, whose land the rivers divide, to the place of the name of Yahweh of hosts, the mount Zion.
