1 Nunca censures com dureza um crente mais velho. Avisa-o como se fosse teu pai. Da mesma forma aos jovens fala-lhes como a irmãos.2 As mulheres mais velhas trata-as como mães, e as jovens como irmãs, com as mais puras intenções.3 Dá toda a atenção a qualquer viúva que não tem mais ninguém que cuide dela.,4 Mas se ela tiver filhos ou netos, a primeira responsabilidade deles é mostrar bondade no seu lar e recompensar os seus pais, cuidando deles. É isto que agrada a Deus.5 Mas a viúva que verdadeiramente está sozinha no mundo coloca a sua esperança em Deus, e continuamente gasta muito tempo em orações e súplicas.6 Mas a viúva que viva somente para o seu prazer está espiritualmente morta.7 Dá estas instruções à igreja para que as viúvas que a igreja suporta não sejam censuradas.8 Portanto se alguém não tem cuidado dos seus parentes, principalmente daqueles com quem vive no seu próprio lar, está a contradizer a sua fé; está mesmo a ser pior do que muitos infiéis.9 Aquela que pretenda estar incluída na lista de viúvas deverá ter pelo menos uns sessenta anos e ter sido fiel ao seu marido10 Deve gozar de estima em razão do bem que tiver praticado, se soube criar bem os seus filhos, se praticou a hospitalidade, se foi capaz de se tornar útil para com os outros crentes, se socorreu os aflitos, se, enfim, soube praticar toda a espécie de boas obras.11 Mas as viúvas mais novas não deves incorporá-las em tal lista, porque os seus desejos físicos naturais ultrapassarão a sua devoção a Cristo e elas desejarão casar de novo12 Sujeitam-se assim à crítica, pelo facto de não terem sabido manter-se fiéis a Deus13 E além disso depressa se habituam a andar de casa em casa em mexericos, para além de se tornarem ociosas, metendo-se onde não são chamadas e falando do que não convém.14 Portanto quanto a essas, mais novas, o melhor é que casem, tenham filhos e se ocupem das suas casas. E assim não darão aos inimigos do evangelho ocasião para dizerem mal.15 Porque algumas até já se desviaram, tornando-se presa de Satanás.16 Portanto se algum crente tem uma viúva na sua família, deve cuidar dela, e não deixar a igreja sobrecarregar-se com isso. Assim a igreja poderá tomar a seu cargo outras que vivem realmente sem o amparo de ninguém.17 Os pastores da igreja, que cumprem zelosamente a sua missão, devem ser bem recompensados, principalmente os que se dedicam não só à pregação como também ao ensino.18 Porque as Escrituras dizem: Não amarrarás a boca de um boi que esteja pisando o grão . E noutro lugar: Todo o trabalhador merece um salário .19 Não aceites queixas contra um pastor, a não ser que seja confirmada por duas ou três testemunhas. Se realmente houve pecado, que seja repreendido na presença de toda a igreja, para que os outros também tenham o temor devido a Deus.21 Com toda a solenidade te mando, diante de Deus, diante de Jesus Cristo e dos seus santos anjos, que observes todos estes preceitos que aqui te exponho, nunca usando de favoritismons.22 Não te decidas precipitadamente na escolha dum pastor, impondo-lhe as mãos. Não participes dos pecados dos outros. Conserva-te sempre afastado do mal.23 Não bebas unicamente água; bebe também um pouco de vinho, pois faz-te bem às tuas frequentes indisposições.24 Há pessoas cujos pecados são evidentes mesmo antes de serem julgados. Mas há outros que só se manifestam mais tarde.25 Do mesmo modo também as boas acções normalmente tornam-se logo conhecidas. Mas ainda que assim não seja, elas não ficarão ocultas.

1 Rebuke not an elder, but entreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.3 Honor widows that are widows indeed.4 But if any widow hath children or nephews, let them learn first to show piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.5 Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.6 But she that liveth in pleasure, is dead while she liveth.7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.8 But if any provideth not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.9 Let not a widow be taken into the number under sixty years old, having been the wife of one man.10 Well reported of for good works; if she hath brought up children, if she hath lodged strangers, if she hath washed the saints' feet, if she hath relieved the afflicted, if she hath diligently followed every good work.11 But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to grow wanton against Christ, they will marry;12 Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.13 And at the same time they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle, but tattlers also, and busy-bodies, speaking things which they ought not.14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give no occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.15 For some are already turned aside after Satan.16 If any man or woman that believeth hath widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.17 Let the elders that rule well, be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine.18 For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The laborer is worthy of his reward.19 Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.20 Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.21 I charge thee before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.22 Impose hands hastily on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake, and thy frequent infirmities.24 Some men's sins are open beforehand, going before to judgment: and some men they follow after.25 Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.
