1 Mas, com os crentes a aumentarem tão rapidamente em número, havia no seu seio murmúrios de descontentamento. Os que só falavam grego queixavam-se de que as suas viúvas eram postas à margem e de que não lhes davam tanta comida na distribuição diária como às viúvas que falavam hebraico.2 Então os doze combinaram uma reunião com os crentes: Nós apóstolos devíamos gastar o nosso tempo a pregar e não a distribuir a comida , disseram. Agora, pois, irmãos, escolham de entre vocês mesmos sete homens sensatos, cheios do Espírito Santo, que gozem de consideração geral, e encarregá-los-emos deste importante trabalho. Só assim poderemos dedicar tempo à oração, pregação e ensino.5 Isto pareceu razoável a toda a assembleia, que escolheu as seguintes pessoas: Estêvão, homem de fé extraordinária e cheio do Espírito Santo, Filipe, Prócoro, Nicanor, Timom, Parmenas e Nicolau de Antioquia, um gentio que se convertera à fé judaica e, mais tarde, ao cristianismo. Estes sete foram apresentados aos apóstolos, que oraram por eles e os abençoaram, pondo sobre eles as mãos.7 A mensagem de Deus era pregada a um auditório cada vez maior, e o número dos discípulos aumentava enormemente em Jerusalém, tendo-se convertido também muitos dos sacerdotes.8 Estêvão, cheio de graça e do poder de Deus, realizava milagres espantosos entre o povo. Mas, um dia, alguns homens da chamada Sinagoga dos Homens Livres começaram a discutir com eles. Eram judeus de Cirene, de Alexandria no Egipto, das províncias da Cilícia, e da província daÁsia. Mas nenhum deles pôde resistir à sabedoria e ao Espírito pelo qual Estêvão falou.11 Então arranjaram falsas testemunhas para afirmarem que o tinham ouvido amaldiçoar Moisés e o próprio Deus12 Esta acusação provocou a fúria da multidão, dos anciãos do povo e dos mestres da lei contra Estêvão. Eles prenderam-no e levaram-no perante o conselho. As testemunhas falsas tornaram a afirmar que Estêvão falava constantemente contra o templo e contra as leis de Moisés: Ouvimos da sua boca que esse tal Jesus de Nazaré há-de destruir o templo e abolir toda a lei de Moisés.15 Neste ponto, todos os que estavam na sala do conselho viram o rosto de Estêvão ficar como o de um anjo.

1 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, performed great wonders and miracles among the people.9 Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia, and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spoke.11 Then they suborned men, who said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,13 And set up false witnesses, who said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:14 For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs which Moses delivered to us.15 And all that sat in the council, looking steadfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.
