1 Veio outra mensagem da parte do Senhor para mim, no dia sete de Dezembro , no quarto ano do reinado de Dario.2 Os judeus da cidade de Betel mandaram um grupo de gente, encabeçados por Sarezer, governador da casa real, mais Regem-Meleque, que vieram até ao templo do Senhor em Jerusalém para implorar o favor do Senhor e para falar aos sacerdotes e profetas sobre se devem continuar os seus costumes tradicionais de jejum e lamentações durante o mês de Agosto de cada ano, como sempre fizeram.4 Foi esta a resposta do Senhor:-5 Quando voltarem para Betel, digam a todo o povo e aos sacerdotes o seguinte: Durante estes setenta anos de exílio, quando jejuaram e choram em Agosto e Outubro estavam realmente desejosos de abandonar os vossos pecados e de se converterem a mim? É claro que não!6 E mesmo agora, nas vossas santas festividades consagradas a Deus, não estão a pensar em mim mas unicamente no que vão comer, nas pessoas com quem se vão encontrar e no prazer que vão ter.7 Há muitos anos, quando Jerusalém era uma cidade próspera e os seus subúrbios a sul, por toda aquela campina, estavam cheios de habitantes, já nessa altura os profetas vos avisavam que essa atitude vos levaria sem falta à ruína, como realmente levou.8 Veio mais a palavra do Senhor a Zacarias:9 Diz-lhe que sejam honestos e justos - que não andem a meter cunhas a troco de dinheiro; que mostrem piedade e misericórdia cada um ao seu próximo. Que não oprimam a viúva, nem o órfão, nem o estrangeiro nem o pobre; que parem de tramar ciladas contra os outros.11 Os vossos pais não quiseram ouvir esta mensagem. Voltaram-me as costas, puseram os dedos nos ouvidos para poderem ficar descansados. Endureceram os corações, como diamantes, só com medo de terem que aceitar as palavras que Deus, o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais, lhes tinha mandado - as leis que lhes revelara pelo seu Espírito, através dos antigos profetas. Foi isso que fez cair sobre eles tamanha ira da parte de Deus.13 Chamei por eles, mas recusaram ouvir-me. Por isso, quando clamaram por mim, me afastei.14 Espalhei-os, como se fosse um tornado, por entre as nações do mundo. A terra ficou desolada; já ninguém viaja sequer por elas. Aquela terra desejada está agora vazia, deserta.

1 And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of the LORD came to Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, even in Chisleu;2 When they had sent to the house of God Sherezer and Regem-melech, and their men, to pray before the LORD,3 And to speak to the priests who were in the house of the LORD of hosts, and to the prophets, saying, Should I weep in the fifth month, separating myself, as I have done these so many years?4 Then came the word of the LORD of hosts to me, saying,5 Speak to all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast to me, even to me?6 And when ye ate, and when ye drank, did ye not eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?7 Should ye not hear the words which the LORD hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and her cities around her, when men inhabited the south and the plain?8 And the word of the LORD came to Zechariah, saying,9 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and show mercy and compassions every man to his brother:10 And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.11 But they refused to hearken, and withdrew the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.12 Yes, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.13 Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the LORD of hosts:14 But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.
