1 Enquanto Paulo e Barnabé estavam em Antioquia da Síria, chegaram alguns homens da Judeia que começaram a ensinar aos crentes que não se poderiam salvar se não obedecessem ao costume judaico da circuncisão ensinado por Moisés. Paulo e Barnabé discutiram este problema com eles a fundo, e finalmente os crentes mandaram-nos a Jerusalém acompanhados por representantes locais para conversar com os apóstolos e anciãos ali acerca do assunto.3 A igreja enviou os delegados a Jerusalém. Pelo caminho, pararam em várias cidades da Fenícia e Samaria para visitar os crentes, dizendo-lhes, com grande alegria de todos, que também os gentios se estavam a converter.4 Chegados a Jerusalém, foram recebidos por toda a igreja, estando presentes todos os apóstolos e anciãos. Paulo e Barnabé contaram o que Deus tinha feito através do seu trabalho. Mas alguns dos que tinham sido fariseus antes de se converterem puseram-se de pé e afirmaram que todos os convertidos gentios deveriam ser circuncidados e obrigados a obedecer aos costumes e cerimónias dos judeus.6 Então, os apóstolos e os anciãos da igreja marcaram nova reunião para resolver o assunto. Nesta reunião, após longas discussões, Pedro levantou-se e falou aos presentes do seguinte modo: Irmãos, todos sabem que Deus me escolheu há muito no vosso meio para pregar o evangelho aos gentios, a fim de que também eles possam crer. Deus, que conhece os corações dos homens, mostrou que aceitava os gentios ao conceder-lhes o dom do Espírito Santo, tal como fez connosco, sem distinguir entre eles e nós, pois purificou a sua vida pela fé, como pela fé havia purificado a nossa.10 E agora porque é que pretendem corrigir Deus, pondo sobre os gentios uma carga que nem nós nem os nossos pais conseguimos suportar? Nós acreditamos que todos são salvos da mesma maneira, pela graça do Senhor Jesus!12 A discussão acabou, passando todos a ouvir Barnabé e Paulo que contavam os milagres que Deus fizera por seu intermédio entre os gentios.13 Quando terminaram, começou Tiago: Irmãos, escutem-me.14 Pedro falou-vos do tempo em que Deus primeiro visitou os gentios para de entre eles levantar um povo que honrasse o seu nome.15 E este facto da conversão dos gentios está de acordo com as predições dos profetas, como está escrita:19 E assim, na minha opinião, não devemos causar dificuldades aos gentios que se voltam para Deus. Devemos escrever-lhes, sim, que não comam carne sacrificada aos ídolos, que se abstenham de comer carne não sangrada de animais estrangulados, nem sangue, e que não pratiquem a imoralidade sexual. Porque a lei de Moisés tem sido pregada em todas as cidades, e sábado após sábado, durante muitas gerações.22 Então os apóstolos, os pastores e toda a congregação em Jerusalém decidiram que se mandassem delegados a Antioquia com Paulo e Barnabé para anunciarem esta decisão. Os escolhidos eram dois pastores da igreja: Judas (a quem chamavam também Barsabás) e Silas.23 A carta que levaram consigo dizia assim:Dos apóstolos, pastores e irmãos em Jerusalém, para os irmãos gentios em Antioquia, Síria e Cilícia: Saudações!24 Consta-nos que alguns crentes daqui vos perturbaram, lançando dúvidas sobre a vossa salvação; mas eles não tinham instruções nossas para o fazer25 Assim, pareceu-nos sensato, depois de termos chegado todos a uma mesma decisão, enviar-vos esses dois representantes nossos, Judas e Silas, os quais, juntamente com Barnabé e Paulo, a quem muito queremos e que arriscaram a vida por amor do nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, confirmarão de viva voz o que resolvemos acerca do vosso caso.28 Porquanto pareceu bem ao Espírito Santo, e a nós, não vos mandar outra recomendação que não seja a de se absterem de coisas oferecidas aos ídolos e da carne não sangrada de animais estrangulados, ou sangue, e da prática de imoralidade sexual. Se isto fizerem, bastará. Com as nossas saudações.30 Os mensageiros partiram imediatamente para Antioquia, onde combinaram uma reunião geral dos cristãos, a quem entregaram a carta.31 A leitura desta mensagem de encorajamento causou grande alegria em toda a igreja.32 Então Judas e Silas, que eram ambos profetas, exortaram muito os crentes, fortalecendo a sua fé33 Ficaram ali algum tempo, e depois Judas e Silas regressaram a Jerusalém, levando consigo saudações àqueles que os tinham enviado.34 Paulo e Barnabé continuaram em Antioquia para ajudar vários outros que ali pregavam e ensinavam a palavra do Senhor.36 Alguns dias depois, Paulo sugeriu a Barnabé que voltassem de novo para a província da Ásia e visitassem cada uma das cidades onde haviam pregado anteriormente, a fim de verem como iam os novos crentes.37 Barnabé concordou e queria levar João Marcos com eles.38 Mas Paulo não achou razoável que levassem consigo alguém que os tinha deixado na Panfília e que não os tinha acompanhado no trabalho.39 E não conseguiram entender-se. Resolveram então separar-se. Barnabé seguiu com Marcos e embarcou para Chipre,e40 enquanto que Paulo escolheu Silas e, com a bênção dos crentes, partiu para a Síria e para Cilícia para animar as igrejas ali existentes.

1 And certain men who came down from Judea, taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.2 When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain others of them, should go to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question.3 And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice, and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy to all the brethren.4 And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church, and by the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.5 But there rose certain of the sect of the Pharisees, who believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.6 And the apostles and elders came together to consider of this matter.7 And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose and said to them, Men, brethren, ye know that a good while ago, God made choice among us, that the Gentiles, by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.8 And God, who knoweth the hearts, bore them witness, giving to them the Holy Spirit, even as he did to us:9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?11 But we believe, that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we shall be saved even as they.12 Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought by them among the Gentiles.13 And after they held their peace, James answered, saying, Men, brethren, hearken to me.14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take from among them a people for his name.15 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins of it; and I will set it up:17 That the residue of men may seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.18 Known to God are all his works from the beginning of the world.19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, who from among the Gentiles are turned to God:20 But that we write to them that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from lewdness, and from things strangled, and from blood.21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath.22 Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch, with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:23 And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles, and elders, and brethren, send greeting to the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, and Syria, and Cilicia.24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain who went out from us, have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law; to whom we gave no such commandment:25 It seemed good to us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men to you, with our beloved Barnabas and Paul:26 Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who will also tell you the same things by mouth.28 For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;29 That ye abstain from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from lewdness: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye will do well. Fare ye well.30 So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had convened the multitude, they delivered the epistle.31 Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.32 And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.33 And after they had tarried there a time, they were dismissed in peace from the brethren to the apostles.34 Notwithstanding, it pleased Silas to abide there still.35 Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.36 And some days after, Paul said to Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren, in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they do.37 And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.38 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed, separating one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed to Cyprus.40 And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being commended by the brethren to the grace of God.41 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.
