1 Paulo e Timóteo, ao serviço de Jesus Cristo, saúdam todos os santos, cujas vidas estão unidas a Cristo Jesus, na cidade de Filipos. Saúdam também os pastores na igreja e os diáconos .2 Que Deus nosso Pai e o Senhor Jesus Cristo vos dê graça e paz.3 Sempre que penso em vocês, louvo e expresso a Deus o meu reconhecimento pelas boas recordações que vocês me deixaram. E quando faço oração, é com alegria que sempre vos menciono, por causa da vossa participação activa na difusão do evangelho, desde o primeiro dia até agora.6 E tenho a certeza de que Deus, que começou essa boa obra na vossa vida, vai completá-la até ao momento em que Jesus Cristo voltar.7 E é justo que sinta isto a vosso respeito, porque vocês têm um lugar muito especial em meu coração; participámos juntos das bênçãos de Deus, tanto quando estava na prisão como em liberdade, defendendo a verdade e proclamando o evangelho.8 Deus sabe como sinto saudades de vocês todos, no verdadeiro amor de Cristo Jesus.9 E peço a Deus que o vosso amor cristão aumente mais e mais e que, ao mesmo tempo, se enriqueça de conhecimento e de compreensão.10 Pois que assim saberão dar o verdadeiro valor às coisas essenciais e a vossa conduta será marcada pela sinceridade, de forma a que nunca haja nenhuma razão de censura, até ao dia em que Jesus há-de voltar.11 E a vossa actividade dará frutos de justiça, os quais são produzidos por Jesus Cristo, do que resultará honra e louvores a Deus.12 Gostava que ficassem a saber bem, meus irmãos, que tudo o que me tem acontecido serviu para uma maior divulgação do evangelho,T13 de tal maneira que todos os guardas da prisão, e muitos outros mais, sabem a razão verdadeira por que estou preso14 E até muitos cristãos, por causa disso, têm sido encorajados no seu testemunho, e falam com mais ousadia aos outros sobre a palavra de Deus.15 É verdade que alguns pregam Cristo só para se porem em pé de igualdade comigo. Contudo muitos outros fazem-no com boas intenções.16 Estes fazem-no por amor, sabendo que fui posto aqui para defender o evangelho.17 Os outros, contudo, falam de Cristo mas num espírito de disputa e sem sinceridade, pensando até com isso aumentar as aflições no meu cárcere.18 Mas isso que importa? Desde que Cristo se torne conhecido, seja de que maneira for, com segundos intentos ou com honestidade, fico e sempre hei-de ficar satisfeito.19 Porque sei que disto virá a resultar na minha libertação, com a ajuda das vossas orações e com o socorro do Espírito de Jesus Cristo.20 É que eu vivo numa intensa expectativa e esperança; e sei que em nada ficarei decepcionado, antes pelo contrário, de acordo com a confiança que sinto, Cristo será honrado pela minha pessoa, agora como sempre, seja que eu continue em vida, ou que venha a ser executado.21 Porque Cristo é a única razão da minha existência, e a morte representa para mim um ganho!22 E se o viver me der oportunidades de obter frutos do meu trabalho, então nem sei o que é melhor.23 As duas coisas me atraem: por um lado desejo partir e estar com Cristo, isto ainda seria o melhor24 mas, por outro, é mais necessário que eu fique, para poder ajudar-vos.25 E é isso que me leva a pensar que não morrerei já; que ainda viverei aqui na terra algum tempo mais para vos ajudar a crescer espiritualmente e a experimentar a alegria da vossa fé,e26 e para que quando eu puder ir visitar-vos, a vossa alegria em Jesus Cristo abunde por aquilo que ele fez por mim.27 Mas devem conduzir-se sempre conforme o evangelho de Cristo; e quer eu possa ir ver-vos, quer não, que aquilo que se diz a vosso respeito seja que vocês continuam unidos espiritualmente, combatendo juntos, num mesmo propósito de espalhar a fé que nos vem pelo evangelho de Cristo28 Não tenham receio dos que resistem: isso mesmo é o sinal de que caminham para a perdição. Mas para vocês é a indicação de que da parte de Deus vos é concedida a vida eterna.429 Porque a vocês vos foi concedido, em relação a Cristo, não somente crer nele, como também padecer por ele!30 Estamos, vocês e eu, empenhados no mesmo combate, combate esse que vocês me viram sustentar no passado, e que, como sabem, continuo a travar.

1 Paul and Timothy, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:2 Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.3 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,4 Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,5 For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;6 Being confident of this very thing, that he who hath begun a good work in you, will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:7 Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.8 For God is my witness, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ;11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.12 But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened to me have fallen out rather to the furtherance of the gospel;13 So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, becoming confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.15 Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife; and some also from good will.16 The one preach Christ from contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:17 But the other from love, knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel.18 What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.19 For I know that this will turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,20 According to my earnest expectation and hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also, Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by death.21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labor: yet what I shall choose I know not.23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:24 Nevertheless, to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;26 That your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again.27 Only let your manner of life be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;28 And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that from God.29 For to you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;30 Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
