1 And Ahab told Jezebel, all that Elijah had done,and withal, how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.2 Then sent Jezebel a messenger unto Elijah, saying,So, let the gods do, and, so, let them add, if, by this time to-morrow, I make not thy life as the life of one of them.3 And, when he saw , he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah,and left his servant there.4 But, he himself, went into the wilderness a days journey, and came and sat down under a certain shrub,and asked for his life, that he might die, and saidEnough, now, O Yahweh! take away my life, for, no better, am, I, than, my fathers.5 And, as he lay, and slept, under a certain shrub, lo! a messenger, touching him, who said to himRise, eat.6 So he looked about, and lo! at his head, a cake baked on hot stones, and a cruse of water,and he did eat and drink, and then went back and lay down.7 And the messenger of Yahweh came again a second time, and touched him, and saidRise, eat,because, too much for thee, is the journey.8 So he arose, and did eat and drink,and journeyed, in the strength of that eating, forty days and forty nights, as far as the mountain of GodHoreb.9 And he entered, there, into a cave, and lodged there,and lo! the word of Yahweh unto him, and said to him, What doest thou here, Elijah?10 And he saidVery jealous, have I been, for Yahweh, God of hosts, because the sons of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thine altars, have they thrown down, thy prophets, also have they slain with the sword,and, I alone, am left, and they have sought my life, to take it.11 And he saidGo forth to-morrow, and stand in the mountain, before Yahweh. And lo! Yahweh, passing by, and a great and strong windrending the mountains, and breaking in pieces the crags, before Yahweh, Not, in the wind, was, Yahweh,And, after the wind, an, earthquake, Not, in the earthquake, was, Yahweh;12 And, after the earthquake, a, fire, Not, in the fire, was, Yahweh,And, after the fire, the voice of a gentle whisper.13 And it came to pass, when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went forth, and stood at the entrance of the cave,and lo! unto him, a voice; and it saidWhat doest thou here, Elijah?14 And he saidVery jealous, have I been, for Yahweh, God of hosts, because the sons of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thine altars, have they thrown down, thy prophets also, have they slain with the sword,and, I alone, am left, and they rove sought my life, to take it.15 And Yahweh said unto him, Go, return to thy way, towards the wilderness of Damascus,and, when thou enterest, then shalt thou anoint Hazael to be king over Syria;16 And, Jehu son of Minshi, shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel,and, Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah, shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy stead:17 Then shall it come to pass, thathim that escapeth the sword of Hazael, shall, Jehu, slay,and, him that escapeth the sword of Jehu, shall, Elisha, slay;18 Yet will I leave remaining in Israel, seven thousand,all knees which have not bowed to Baal, and all mouths which have not kissed to him.19 So he departed from thence, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, as he was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen before him, he being with the twelfth,so Elijah crossed over unto him, and cast his mantle towards him;20 and he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and saidLet me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, that I may follow thee. And he said unto him,Go, turn back, for what have I done to thee?21 So he turned back from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and sacrificed them, and, with the implements of the oxen, boiled their flesh, and gave unto the people, and they did eat,then he arose, and followed Elijah, and ministered unto him.

1 E Acabe fez saber a Jezabel tudo quanto Elias havia feito e como totalmente matara todos os profetas à espada. 2 Então, Jezabel mandou um mensageiro a Elias, a dizer-lhe: Assim me façam os deuses e outro tanto, se decerto amanhã a estas horas não puser a tua vida como a de um deles. 3 O que vendo ele, se levantou, e, para escapar com vida, se foi, e veio a Berseba, que é de Judá, e deixou ali o seu moço.

4 E ele se foi ao deserto, caminho de um dia, e veio, e se assentou debaixo de um zimbro; e pediu em seu ânimo a morte e disse: Já basta, ó Senhor; toma agora a minha vida, pois não sou melhor do que meus pais. 5 E deitou-se e dormiu debaixo de um zimbro; e eis que, então, um anjo o tocou e lhe disse: Levanta-te e come. 6 E olhou, e eis que à sua cabeceira estava um pão cozido sobre as brasas e uma botija de água; e comeu, e bebeu, e tornou a deitar-se. 7 E o anjo do Senhor tornou segunda vez, e o tocou, e disse: Levanta-te e come, porque mui comprido te será o caminho.

8 Levantou-se, pois, e comeu, e bebeu, e, com a força daquela comida, caminhou quarenta dias e quarenta noites até Horebe, o monte de Deus.

9 E ali entrou numa caverna e passou ali a noite; e eis que a palavra do Senhor veio a ele e lhe disse: Que fazes aqui, Elias? 10 E ele disse: Tenho sido muito zeloso pelo Senhor, Deus dos Exércitos, porque os filhos de Israel deixaram o teu concerto, derribaram os teus altares e mataram os teus profetas à espada; e eu fiquei só, e buscam a minha vida para ma tirarem. 11 E ele lhe disse: Sai para fora e põe-te neste monte perante a face do Senhor. E eis que passava o Senhor, como também um grande e forte vento, que fendia os montes e quebrava as penhas diante da face do Senhor; porém o Senhor não estava no vento; e, depois do vento, um terremoto; também o Senhor não estava no terremoto; 12 e, depois do terremoto, um fogo; porém também o Senhor não estava no fogo; e, depois do fogo, uma voz mansa e delicada. 13 E sucedeu que, ouvindo-a Elias, envolveu o seu rosto na sua capa, e saiu para fora, e pôs-se à entrada da caverna; e eis que veio a ele uma voz, que dizia: Que fazes aqui, Elias? 14 E ele disse: Eu tenho sido em extremo zeloso pelo Senhor, Deus dos Exércitos, porque os filhos de Israel deixaram o teu concerto, derribaram os teus altares e mataram os teus profetas à espada; e eu fiquei só, e buscam a minha vida para ma tirarem. 15 E o Senhor lhe disse: Vai, volta pelo teu caminho para o deserto de Damasco, vem e unge a Hazael rei sobre a Síria. 16 Também a Jeú, filho de Ninsi, ungirás rei de Israel e também Eliseu, filho de Safate, de Abel-Meolá, ungirás profeta em teu lugar. 17 E há de ser que o que escapar da espada de Hazael, matá-lo-á Jeú; e o que escapar da espada de Jeú, matá-lo-á Eliseu. 18 Também eu fiz ficar em Israel sete mil: todos os joelhos que se não dobraram a Baal, e toda boca que o não beijou.

19 Partiu, pois, Elias dali e achou a Eliseu, filho de Safate, que andava lavrando com doze juntas de bois adiante dele; e ele estava com a duodécima. Elias passou por ele e lançou a sua capa sobre ele. 20 Então, deixou ele os bois, e correu após Elias, e disse: Deixa-me beijar a meu pai e a minha mãe e, então, te seguirei. E ele lhe disse: Vai e volta; porque que te tenho eu feito? 21 Voltou, pois, de atrás dele, e tomou uma junta de bois, e os matou, e, com os aparelhos dos bois, cozeu as carnes, e as deu ao povo, e comeram. Então, se levantou, e seguiu a Elias, e o servia.
