1 And Solomon contracted an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt,and took the daughter of Pharaoh, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of Yahweh, and the wall of Jerusalem, round about.2 Save only, that the people were sacrificing in the high places,because there had not been built a house unto the Name of Yahweh, until those days,3 Solomon loved Yahweh, by walking in the statutes of David his father,save only, that, in the high places, he himself, was sacrificing and offering incense.4 So then the king went to Gibeon, to sacrifice there, for, that, was the great high place,a thousand ascending-sacrifices, did Solomon offer up on that altar.5 In Gibeon, Yahweh appeared unto Solomon, in a dream by night,and God said, Ask, what I shall give thee.6 Then said SolomonThou, didst deal, with thy servant David my father, in great lovingkindness, according as he walked before thee, in truth and in righteousness and in uprightness of heart, with thee,and thou hast kept, for him, this great lovingkindness, that thou hast given unto him a son, to sit upon his throne, as it is this day.7 Now, therefore, O Yahweh my God, thou, hast made thy servant king, instead of David my father,and, I, am but a little child, I know not how to go out and come in.8 And, thy servant, is in the midst of thy people, whom thou hast chosen,a numerous people, that cannot be numbered or summed up, for multitude.9 Wilt thou, then, give unto thy servant, a heart that hearkeneth, to judge thy people, to discern between good and bad,for who is able to judge this thine honoured people?10 And the thing was good in the eyes of the Lord,that Solomon had asked this thing;11 And God said unto himBecause thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself many days, nor asked for thyself riches, nor asked the lives of thine enemies,but hast asked for thyself discernment, in hearing a cause,12 lo! I have done according to thy word,lo! I have given unto thee a wise and discerning heart, so that, like thee, hath been none, before thee, and, after thee, shall rise up none, like thee.13 Moreover also, what thou hast not asked, have I given unto thee, both riches and honour,so that there hath been none, like thee, among the kings, all thy days.14 And, if thou wilt walk in my ways, by keeping my statutes, and my commandments, as, David thy father, walked, then will I lengthen out thy days.15 And Solomon awoke, and lo! it was a dream. So he entered into Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and caused to go up ascending-sacrifices and offered peace-offerings, and made a banquet for all his servants.16 Then, came there in two unchaste women, unto the king,and stood before him.17 And the one woman saidPardon, my lord! I and this woman, dwell in one house,and I gave birth to a child near her, in the house.18 And it came to pass, the third day after I bare, that, this woman also, gave birth to a child,we two, being together, there was no stranger with us in the house, none but we two in the house.19 And this womans son died in the night,because she overlaid it.20 Then arose she, in the middle of the night, and took my son from beside me, while thy handmaid was sleeping, and laid it in her own besom,but, her dead son, laid she in, my, bosom.21 And, when I arose in the morning, to give suck unto my child, lo! it was dead! but, when I looked at it narrowly in the morning, lo! it was not, my son that I had borne.22 Then said the other womanNay! but, my son, is the, living, and, thy son, the, dead. But, this, one kept on sayingNay, verily! but, thy son, is the, dead, and, my son, the, living. Thus spake they before the king.23 Then said the king, The one woman, is saying, This, is, my son, the one that liveth, and, thy son, is, the one that is dead,and, the other, is saying, Nay! but, thy son, is, the dead one, and, my son, the, living.24 And the king saidBring me a sword! So they brought a sword before the king.25 Then said the king, Divide the living child, in twain,and give half to the one, and half to the other.26 Then spake the woman, whose was the living child, unto the kingfor tender became her compassions over her sonso she saidPardon, my lord! Give, her, the living child, and do not, kill, it. But the other kept on sayingNeither mine, nor thine, shall it be, divide it.27 Then responded the king, and saidGive, her, the living child, ye shall not, kill, it,she, is its mother.28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had delivered, and they stood in awe before the king,for they saw, that, the wisdom of God, was in him, to execute justice.

1 E Salomão se aparentou com Faraó, rei do Egito, e tomou a filha de Faraó, e a trouxe à Cidade de Davi, até que acabasse de edificar a sua casa, e a Casa do Senhor, e a muralha de Jerusalém em roda. 2 Somente que o povo sacrificava sobre os altos, porque até àqueles dias ainda se não tinha edificado casa ao nome do Senhor.

3 E Salomão amava ao Senhor, andando nos estatutos de Davi, seu pai; somente que nos altos sacrificava e queimava incenso. 4 E foi o rei a Gibeão para lá sacrificar, porque aquele era o alto grande; mil holocaustos sacrificou Salomão naquele altar. 5 E em Gibeão apareceu o Senhor a Salomão de noite em sonhos e disse-lhe Deus: Pede o que quiseres que te dê. 6 E disse Salomão: De grande beneficência usaste tu com teu servo Davi, meu pai, como também ele andou contigo em verdade, e em justiça, e em retidão de coração, perante a tua face; e guardaste-lhe esta grande beneficência e lhe deste um filho que se assentasse no seu trono, como se vê neste dia. 7 Agora, pois, ó Senhor, meu Deus, tu fizeste reinar teu servo em lugar de Davi, meu pai; e sou ainda menino pequeno, nem sei como sair, nem como entrar. 8 E teu servo está no meio do teu povo que elegeste, povo grande, que nem se pode contar, nem numerar, pela sua multidão. 9 A teu servo, pois, dá um coração entendido para julgar a teu povo, para que prudentemente discirna entre o bem e o mal; porque quem poderia julgar a este teu tão grande povo?

10 E esta palavra pareceu boa aos olhos do Senhor, que Salomão pedisse esta coisa. 11 E disse-lhe Deus: Porquanto pediste esta coisa e não pediste para ti riquezas, nem pediste a vida de teus inimigos, mas pediste para ti entendimento, para ouvir causas de juízo; 12 eis que fiz segundo as tuas palavras, eis que te dei um coração tão sábio e entendido, que antes de ti teu igual não houve, e depois de ti teu igual se não levantará. 13 E também até o que não pediste te dei, assim riquezas como glória; que não haja teu igual entre os reis, por todos os teus dias. 14 E, se andares nos meus caminhos guardando os meus estatutos e os meus mandamentos, como andou Davi, teu pai, também prolongarei os teus dias. 15 E acordou Salomão, e eis que era sonho. E veio a Jerusalém, e pôs-se perante a arca do concerto do Senhor, e sacrificou holocaustos, e preparou sacrifícios pacíficos, e fez um banquete a todos os seus servos.

16 Então, vieram duas mulheres prostitutas ao rei e se puseram perante ele. 17 E disse-lhe uma das mulheres: Ah! Senhor meu, eu e esta mulher moramos numa casa; e tive um filho, morando com ela naquela casa. 18 E sucedeu que, ao terceiro dia depois do meu parto, também esta mulher teve um filho; estávamos juntas, estranho nenhum estava conosco na casa, senão nós ambas naquela casa. 19 E de noite morreu o filho desta mulher, porquanto se deitara sobre ele. 20 E levantou-se à meia-noite, e me tirou a meu filho do meu lado, dormindo a tua serva, e o deitou no seu seio, e a seu filho morto deitou no meu seio. 21 E, levantando-me eu pela manhã, para dar de mamar a meu filho, eis que estava morto; mas, atentando pela manhã para ele, eis que não era o filho que eu havia tido. 22 Então, disse a outra mulher: Não, mas o vivo é meu filho, e teu filho, o morto. Porém esta disse: Não, por certo, o morto é teu filho, e meu filho, o vivo. Assim falaram perante o rei.

23 Então, disse o rei: Esta diz: Este que vive é meu filho, e teu filho, o morto; e esta outra diz: Não, por certo; o morto é teu filho, e meu filho, o vivo. 24 Disse mais o rei: Trazei-me uma espada. E trouxeram uma espada diante do rei. 25 E disse o rei: Dividi em duas partes o menino vivo: e dai metade a uma e metade a outra. 26 Mas a mulher cujo filho era o vivo falou ao rei (porque o seu coração se lhe enterneceu por seu filho) e disse: Ah! Senhor meu, dai-lhe o menino vivo e por modo nenhum o mateis. Porém a outra dizia: Nem teu nem meu seja; dividi-o antes. 27 Então, respondeu o rei e disse: Dai a esta o menino vivo e de maneira nenhuma o mateis, porque esta é sua mãe. 28 E todo o Israel ouviu a sentença que dera o rei e temeu ao rei, porque viram que havia nele a sabedoria de Deus, para fazer justiça.
