1 And it came to pass, after many days, that, the word of Yahweh, came unto Elijah, in the third year, saying,Go, shew thyself unto Ahab, that I may send rain upon the face of the ground.2 And Elijah went, to show himself unto Ahab. Now, the famine, was severe in Samaria.3 And Ahab had called for Obadiah, who was over his house. Now, Obadiah, was one who revered Yahweh, exceedingly.4 And so it came to pass, when Jezebel was cutting off the prophets of Yahweh, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifties in caves, and sustained them, with bread and water.5 So then Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go, and let us pass throughout the land, unto all the fountains of water, and unto all the ravines, peradventure we may find grass, and save alive horse and mule, and not have more of the beasts cut off.6 So they divided to them the land, to pass through it,Ahab, went one way, by himself, and, Obadiah, went another way, by himself.7 And so it was, as Obadiah was on the road, that lo! Elijah, met him,and he recognised him, and fell upon his face, and saidNow art, thou, my lord Elijah?8 And he said to himI, am! Go, say to thy lord: Here, is, Elijah!9 And he saidHow have I sinned,that, thou, art delivering thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to put me to death?10 By the life of Yahweh thy God, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee, and, when they have saidNay! he hath taken an oath of the kingdom or the nation, that no one could find thee;11 and, now, thou, art saying,Go say to thy lord, Here, is, Elijah;12 so shall it come to pass, as soon as, I, go from thee, that, the spirit of Yahweh, shall carry thee awaywhither I know not, and so, when I go in to tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, then will he slay me,and yet, thy servant, hath revered Yahweh, from my youth.13 Was it not told my lord, what I did when Jezebel was slaying the prophets of Yahweh,how I hid, of the prophets of Yahweh, a hundred menby fiftiesin caves, and sustained them with bread and water?14 and yet, now, thou, art saying, Go, tell thy lordHere, is, Elijah; and so he will slay me!15 Then said ElijahBy the life of Yahweh of hosts, before whom I stand, to-day, will I show myself unto him.16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him,and, Ahab, went to meet, Elijah.17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Now, art, thou, troubling Israel?18 And he saidI have not troubled Israel, but, thou and the house of thy father,in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Yahweh, and followed Baal.19 Now, therefore, send, gather unto me all Israel, unto Mount Carmel,and the prophets of Baal, four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the Sacred Stem, four hundred, who do eat at the table of Jezebel.20 So Ahab sent among all the sons of Israel,and gathered the prophets unto Mount Carmel.21 And Elijah drew near unto all the people, and saidHow long are ye limping on the two divided opinions? If, Yahweh, be GOD, follow, him, but, if, Baal, follow, him. But the people answered him, not a word.22 Then said Elijah unto the peopleI, am left, Yahwehs, only, prophet,but, the prophets of Baal, are four hundred and fifty men.23 Let there be given us, therefore, two bullocks, and let them choose for themselves one bullock, and cut it in pieces, and lay it upon the wood, but, fire, shall they not put,then, I, will make ready the other bullock, and place upon the wood, but, fire, will I not put.24 Then shall ye call on the name of your god, and, I, will call on the name of Yahweh, and it shall be, the God that respondeth by fire, he, is GOD. And all the people respondedWell spoken!25 Then said Elijah to the prophets of BaalChoose for yourselves one bullock, and make ye ready, first, for, ye, are many,and call ye on the name of your god, but, fire, shall ye not put.26 So they took the bullock which was given them, and made ready, and called on the name of Baalfrom the morning even until the noon, sayingO Baal! answer us. But them was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped about by the altar which had been made.27 And it came to pass, at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and saidCry with a loud voice, for, a god, he is, either he hath, a meditation, or an occasion to retire, or he hath, a journey,peradventure, he, sleepeth, and must be awaked.28 And they cried, with a loud voice, and cut themselves, after their custom, with swords, and with lances,until the blood gushed out upon them.29 And so it was, when noon was passed, that although they prophesied until the offering up of the evening gift, yet was there no voice nor any that answered, nor any that hearkened.30 Then said Elijah unto all the people: Draw near unto, me. And all the people drew near unto, him. Then repaired he the broken-down altar of Yahweh; yea Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob,31 unto whom the word of Yahweh came, sayingIsrael, shall be thy name;32 and built, with the stones, an altar, in the name of Yahweh,and he made a trench, as large as would contain two measures of seed, round about the altar;33 and he put in order the wood,and cut in pieces the bullock, and laid upon the wood. Then said heFill four pitchers with water, and pour out upon the ascending-sacrifice, and upon the wood. And they did so.34 And he saidDo it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he saidDo it the third time. And they did it the third time.35 And the water ran round about the altar,moreover also, the trench, filled he with water.36 And it came to pass, at the time of the offering of the gift, that Elijah the prophet drew near, and said, O Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel! To-day, let it be knownThat, thou, art God in Israel, and that, I, am thy servant,and that, by thy word, have I done all these things.37 Answer me, O Yahweh! answer me, That this people may know, that, thouYahweh, art GOD,so shalt, thou thyself, have turned their heart back again.38 Then fell fire from Yahweh, and consumed the ascending-sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust,even the water that was in the trench, it licked up.39 And, when all the people saw it, they fell upon their faces,and said, Yahweh, he, is GOD, Yahweh, he, is GOD.40 And Elijah said unto themSeize ye the prophets of Baallet not, a man, of them escape. So they seized them. And Elijah took them down unto the ravine of Kishon, and slaughtered them there.41 Then said Elijah unto Ahab, Go up, eat and drink,for there is a sound of a downpour of rain.42 So Ahab went up, to eat and to drink,but, Elijah, went up to the top of Carmel, and bowed himself to the earth, and put his face between his knees.43 Then said he unto his young manGo up, I pray thee, and look about in the direction of the sea. So he went up, and looked about, and saidThere is, nothing whatever. Then said heGo again, seven times.44 And it came to pass, at the seventh time, that he said, Lo! a little cloud, like a mans hand coming up from the sea. Then he saidGo up, say unto AhabHarness, and get thee down, lest the rain shut thee in.45 And it came to pass, meanwhile, that, the heavens, had enshrouded themselves with clouds and wind, and there came a great rain, and Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel;46 but, the hand of Yahweh, came upon Elijah, so he girded his loins,and ran before Ahab, until thou enterest Jezreel.

1 E sucedeu que, depois de muitos dias, a palavra do Senhor veio a Elias no terceiro ano, dizendo: Vai e mostra-te a Acabe, porque darei chuva sobre a terra. 2 E foi Elias mostrar-se a Acabe; e a fome era extrema em Samaria. 3 E Acabe chamou a Obadias, o mordomo. (Obadias temia muito ao Senhor, 4 porque sucedeu que, destruindo Jezabel os profetas do Senhor, Obadias tomou cem profetas, e de cinquenta em cinquenta os escondeu, numa cova, e os sustentou com pão e água.) 5 E disse Acabe a Obadias: Vai pela terra a todas as fontes de água e a todos os rios; pode ser que achemos erva, para que em vida conservemos os cavalos e mulas e não estejamos privados dos animais. 6 E repartiram entre si a terra, para passarem por ela; Acabe foi à parte por um caminho, e Obadias também foi à parte por outro caminho.

7 Estando, pois, Obadias já em caminho, eis que Elias o encontrou; e, conhecendo-o ele, prostrou-se sobre o seu rosto e disse: És tu o meu senhor Elias? 8 E disse-lhe ele: Eu sou; vai e dize a teu senhor: Eis que aqui está Elias. 9 Porém ele disse: Em que pequei, para que entregues teu servo na mão de Acabe, para que me mate? 10 Vive o Senhor, teu Deus, que não houve nação nem reino aonde o meu senhor não mandasse em busca de ti; e dizendo eles: Aqui não está, então, ajuramentava os reinos e as nações, se eles te não tinham achado. 11 E, agora, dizes tu: Vai, dize a teu senhor: Eis que aqui está Elias. 12 E poderia ser que, apartando-me eu de ti, o Espírito do Senhor te tomasse, não sei para onde, e, vindo eu a dar as novas a Acabe, e não te achando ele, me mataria; porém eu, teu servo, temo ao Senhor desde a minha mocidade. 13 Porventura, não disseram a meu senhor o que fiz, quando Jezabel matava os profetas do Senhor, como escondi a cem homens dos profetas do Senhor, de cinquenta em cinquenta, numas covas, e os sustentei com pão e água? 14 E, agora, dizes tu: Vai e dize a teu senhor: Eis que aqui está Elias; ele me mataria. 15 E disse Elias: Vive o Senhor dos Exércitos, perante cuja face estou, que deveras hoje me mostrarei a ele. 16 Então, foi Obadias encontrar-se com Acabe e lho anunciou; e foi Acabe encontrar-se com Elias.

17 E sucedeu que, vendo Acabe a Elias, disse-lhe Acabe: És tu o perturbador de Israel? 18 Então, disse ele: Eu não tenho perturbado a Israel, mas tu e a casa de teu pai, porque deixastes os mandamentos do Senhor e seguistes os baalins. 19 Agora, pois, envia, ajunta a mim todo o Israel no monte Carmelo, como também os quatrocentos e cinquenta profetas de Baal e os quatrocentos profetas de Aserá, que comem da mesa de Jezabel.

20 Então, enviou Acabe os mensageiros a todos os filhos de Israel e ajuntou os profetas no monte Carmelo. 21 Então, Elias se chegou a todo o povo e disse: Até quando coxeareis entre dois pensamentos? Se o Senhor é Deus, segui-o; e, se Baal, segui-o. Porém o povo lhe não respondeu nada.

22 Então, disse Elias ao povo: Só eu fiquei por profeta do Senhor, e os profetas de Baal são quatrocentos e cinquenta homens. 23 Deem-se-nos, pois, dois bezerros, e eles escolham para si um dos bezerros, e o dividam em pedaços, e o ponham sobre a lenha, porém não lhe metam fogo, e eu prepararei o outro bezerro, e o porei sobre a lenha, e não lhe meterei fogo. 24 Então, invocai o nome do vosso deus, e eu invocarei o nome do Senhor; e há de ser que o deus que responder por fogo esse será Deus. E todo o povo respondeu e disse: É boa esta palavra. 25 E disse Elias aos profetas de Baal: Escolhei para vós um dos bezerros, e preparai-o primeiro, porque sois muitos, e invocai o nome do vosso deus, e não lhe metais fogo. 26 E tomaram o bezerro que lhes dera e o prepararam; e invocaram o nome de Baal, desde a manhã até ao meio-dia, dizendo: Ah! Baal, responde-nos! Porém nem havia voz, nem quem respondesse; e saltavam sobre o altar que se tinha feito. 27 E sucedeu que, ao meio-dia, Elias zombava deles e dizia: Clamai em altas vozes, porque ele é um deus; pode ser que esteja falando, ou que tenha alguma coisa que fazer, ou que intente alguma viagem; porventura, dorme e despertará. 28 E eles clamavam a grandes vozes e se retalhavam com facas e com lancetas, conforme o seu costume, até derramarem sangue sobre si. 29 E sucedeu que, passado o meio-dia, profetizaram eles, até que a oferta de manjares se oferecesse; porém não houve voz, nem resposta, nem atenção alguma. 30 Então, Elias disse a todo o povo: Chegai-vos a mim. E todo o povo se chegou a ele; e reparou o altar do Senhor, que estava quebrado. 31 E Elias tomou doze pedras, conforme o número das tribos dos filhos de Jacó, ao qual veio a palavra do Senhor, dizendo: Israel será o teu nome. 32 E com aquelas pedras edificou o altar em nome do Senhor; depois, fez um rego em redor do altar, segundo a largura de duas medidas de semente. 33 Então, armou a lenha, e dividiu o bezerro em pedaços, e o pôs sobre a lenha, 34 e disse: Enchei de água quatro cântaros e derramai-a sobre o holocausto e sobre a lenha. E disse: Fazei-o segunda vez; e o fizeram segunda vez. Disse ainda: Fazei-o terceira vez; e o fizeram terceira vez, 35 de maneira que a água corria ao redor do altar, e ainda até o rego encheu de água.

36 Sucedeu, pois, que, oferecendo-se a oferta de manjares, o profeta Elias se chegou e disse: Ó Senhor, Deus de Abraão, de Isaque e de Israel, manifeste-se hoje que tu és Deus em Israel, e que eu sou teu servo, e que conforme a tua palavra fiz todas estas coisas. 37 Responde-me, Senhor, responde-me, para que este povo conheça que tu, Senhor, és Deus e que tu fizeste tornar o seu coração para trás. 38 Então, caiu fogo do Senhor, e consumiu o holocausto, e a lenha, e as pedras, e o pó, e ainda lambeu a água que estava no rego. 39 O que vendo todo o povo, caiu sobre os seus rostos e disse: Só o Senhor é Deus! Só o Senhor é Deus! 40 E Elias lhes disse: Lançai mão dos profetas de Baal, que nenhum deles escape. E lançaram mão deles; e Elias os fez descer ao ribeiro de Quisom e ali os matou.

41 Então, disse Elias a Acabe: Sobe, come e bebe, porque ruído há de uma abundante chuva. 42 E Acabe subiu a comer e a beber; mas Elias subiu ao cume do Carmelo, e se inclinou por terra, e meteu o seu rosto entre os seus joelhos. 43 E disse ao seu moço: Sobe agora e olha para a banda do mar. E subiu, e olhou, e disse: Não há nada. Então, disse ele: Torna lá sete vezes. 44 E sucedeu que, à sétima vez, disse: Eis aqui uma pequena nuvem, como a mão de um homem, subindo do mar. Então, disse ele: Sobe e dize a Acabe: Aparelha o teu carro e desce, para que a chuva te não apanhe. 45 E sucedeu que, entretanto, os céus se enegreceram com nuvens e vento, e veio uma grande chuva; e Acabe subiu ao carro e foi para Jezreel. 46 E a mão do Senhor estava sobre Elias, o qual cingiu os lombos, e veio correndo perante Acabe, até à entrada de Jezreel.
