1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who is seated upon many waters,2 with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and with the wine of whose fornication the dwellers on earth have become drunk."3 And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns.4 The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and bedecked with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her fornication;5 and on her forehead was written a name of mystery: "Babylon the great, mother of harlots and of earth's abominations."6 And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. When I saw her I marveled greatly.7 But the angel said to me, "Why marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman, and of the beast with seven heads and ten horns that carries her.8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is to ascend from the bottomless pit and go to perdition; and the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, will marvel to behold the beast, because it was and is not and is to come.9 This calls for a mind with wisdom: the seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated;10 they are also seven kings, five of whom have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come, and when he comes he must remain only a little while.11 As for the beast that was and is not, it is an eighth but it belongs to the seven, and it goes to perdition.12 And the ten horns that you saw are ten kings who have not yet received royal power, but they are to receive authority as kings for one hour, together with the beast.13 These are of one mind and give over their power and authority to the beast;14 they will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful."15 And he said to me, "The waters that you saw, where the harlot is seated, are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues.16 And the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast will hate the harlot; they will make her desolate and naked, and devour her flesh and burn her up with fire,17 for God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by being of one mind and giving over their royal power to the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.18 And the woman that you saw is the great city which has dominion over the kings of the earth."

1 Então um dos sete anjos que tinham as sete taças veio me dizer:

— Venha, e eu vou lhe mostrar como será castigada a famosa prostituta, aquela grande cidade que está construída perto de muitos rios. 2 Os reis do mundo inteiro cometeram imoralidade sexual com ela, e os povos do mundo ficaram bêbados com o vinho da sua imoralidade.

3 Então o Espírito de Deus me dominou, e o anjo me levou para um deserto, onde vi uma mulher montada num monstro vermelho. Havia muitas blasfêmias escritas nele, e ele tinha sete cabeças e dez chifres. 4 A mulher usava um vestido cor de púrpura e vermelho vivo e estava coberta de enfeites de ouro, de pedras preciosas e pérolas. Na mão ela segurava uma taça de ouro cheia de vinho, que representava as suas práticas indecentes e a imundícia da sua imoralidade. 5 Na sua testa estava escrito um nome que tem um significado secreto: "A grande Babilônia , mãe de todas as prostitutas e de todas as pessoas imorais do mundo." 6 Então vi que a mulher estava embriagada com o sangue do povo de Deus e das pessoas que haviam sido mortas porque tinham sido fiéis a Jesus.

Quando a vi, fiquei muito espantado. 7 E o anjo me perguntou:

— Por que é que você está assim, tão espantado? Vou lhe contar o significado secreto da mulher e do monstro que a carrega, o qual tem sete cabeças e dez chifres. 8 O monstro que você viu estava vivo, mas agora não vive mais. Ele está para subir do abismo, e dali sairá, e será destruído. Os moradores da terra que desde a criação do mundo não têm os seus nomes escritos no Livro da Vida ficarão espantados quando olharem para o monstro. Ele estava vivo; agora não vive mais, porém tornará a aparecer.

9 — Isto exige sabedoria e entendimento: as sete cabeças são sete montes onde a mulher está sentada. Elas também são sete reis: 10 Cinco já morreram, um está governando, e o outro ainda não apareceu. E, quando aparecer, precisará governar por pouco tempo. 11 E o monstro que já esteve vivo, mas que agora não vive mais, é o oitavo rei, que faz parte dos primeiros sete e que vai ser destruído.

12 — Os dez chifres que você viu são dez reis que ainda não começaram a governar, mas vão receber autoridade para reinar com o monstro durante uma hora . 13 Esses dez estão todos de acordo entre si e dão ao monstro o poder e a autoridade que possuem. 14 Eles lutarão contra o Cordeiro, e ele os vencerá porque é o Senhor dos senhores e o Rei dos reis. E com ele vencerão os seus seguidores, aqueles que são chamados e fiéis.

15 Então o anjo também me disse:

— As águas que você viu, onde a prostituta está sentada, são nações, povos, raças e línguas. 16 Os dez chifres que você viu e o monstro odiarão a prostituta. Eles tirarão tudo o que ela tem e a deixarão nua. Devorarão a sua carne e queimarão o resto no fogo. 17 Os dez reis farão isso porque Deus colocou no coração deles o desejo de fazerem o que ele quer. Assim entre si concordarão em entregar ao monstro a autoridade que eles têm para governar. Isso acontecerá até que se cumpram as palavras de Deus.

18 — A mulher que você viu é a grande cidade que domina os reis do mundo inteiro.
