1 Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged him.2 And the soldiers plaited a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and arrayed him in a purple robe;3 they came up to him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and struck him with their hands.4 Pilate went out again, and said to them, "See, I am bringing him out to you, that you may know that I find no crime in him."5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Behold the man!"6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no crime in him."7 The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he has made himself the Son of God."8 When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid;9 he entered the praetorium again and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave no answer.10 Pilate therefore said to him, "You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and power to crucify you?"11 Jesus answered him, "You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore he who delivered me to you has the greater sin."12 Upon this Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, "If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend; every one who makes himself a king sets himself against Caesar."13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, and in Hebrew, Gab'batha.14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"15 They cried out, "Away with him, away with him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."16 Then he handed him over to them to be crucified.17 So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Gol'gotha.18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them.19 Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it read, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews."20 Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.21 The chief priests of the Jews then said to Pilate, "Do not write, `The King of the Jews,' but, `This man said, I am King of the Jews.'"22 Pilate answered, "What I have written I have written."23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus they took his garments and made four parts, one for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was without seam, woven from top to bottom;24 so they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be." This was to fulfil the scripture, "They parted my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots."25 So the soldiers did this. But standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Mag'dalene.26 When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!"27 Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.28 After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfil the scripture), "I thirst."29 A bowl full of vinegar stood there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop and held it to his mouth.30 When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished"; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.31 Since it was the day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him;33 but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.35 He who saw it has borne witness--his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth--that you also may believe.36 For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, "Not a bone of him shall be broken."37 And again another scripture says, "They shall look on him whom they have pierced."38 After this Joseph of Arimathe'a, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him leave. So he came and took away his body.39 Nicode'mus also, who had at first come to him by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds' weight.40 They took the body of Jesus, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb where no one had ever been laid.42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, as the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

1 Aí Pilatos mandou chicotear Jesus. 2 Depois os soldados fizeram uma coroa de ramos cheios de espinhos, e a puseram na cabeça dele, e o vestiram com uma capa vermelha. 3 Chegavam perto dele e diziam:

— Viva o rei dos judeus!

E davam bofetadas nele. 4 Aí Pilatos saiu outra vez e disse para a multidão:

— Escutem! Vou trazer o homem aqui para que vocês saibam que não encontro nenhum motivo para condená-lo!

5 Então Jesus saiu com a coroa de espinhos na cabeça e vestido com a capa vermelha.

— Vejam! Aqui está o homem! — disse Pilatos.

6 Quando os chefes dos sacerdotes e os guardas do Templo viram Jesus, começaram a gritar:

— Crucifica! Crucifica!

— Vocês que o levem e o crucifiquem! Eu não encontro nenhum motivo para condenar este homem! — repetiu Pilatos.

7 A multidão respondeu:

— Nós temos uma Lei, e ela diz que este homem deve morrer porque afirma que é o Filho de Deus.

8 Quando Pilatos ouviu isso, ficou com mais medo ainda. 9 Entrou outra vez no palácio e perguntou a Jesus:

— De onde você é?

Mas Jesus não respondeu nada. 10 Então Pilatos disse:

— Você não quer falar comigo? Lembre que eu tenho autoridade tanto para soltá-lo como para mandar crucificá-lo.

11 Jesus respondeu:

— O senhor só tem autoridade sobre mim porque ela lhe foi dada por Deus. Por isso aquele que me entregou ao senhor é culpado de um pecado maior.

12 Depois disso Pilatos quis soltar Jesus. Mas a multidão gritou:

— Se o senhor soltar esse homem, não é amigo do Imperador! Pois quem diz que é rei é inimigo do Imperador!

13 Quando Pilatos ouviu isso, trouxe Jesus para fora e sentou-se no tribunal, no lugar chamado "Calçada de Pedra". (Em hebraico o nome desse lugar é "Gabatá".) 14 Era quase meio-dia da véspera da Páscoa. Pilatos disse para a multidão:

— Aqui está o rei de vocês!

15 Mas eles gritaram:

— Mata! Mata! Crucifica!

Então Pilatos perguntou:

— Querem que eu crucifique o rei de vocês?

Mas os chefes dos sacerdotes responderam:

— O nosso único rei é o Imperador!

16 Então Pilatos entregou Jesus aos soldados para ser crucificado, e eles o levaram.

17 Jesus saiu carregando ele mesmo a cruz para o lugar chamado Calvário. (Em hebraico o nome desse lugar é "Gólgota".)

18 Ali os soldados pregaram Jesus na cruz. E crucificaram também outros dois homens, um de cada lado dele. 19,20 Pilatos mandou escrever um letreiro e colocá-lo na parte de cima da cruz. Nesse letreiro estava escrito em hebraico, latim e grego: "Jesus de Nazaré, Rei dos Judeus". Muitas pessoas leram o letreiro porque o lugar em que Jesus foi crucificado ficava perto da cidade. 21 Então os chefes dos sacerdotes disseram a Pilatos:

— Não escreva: "Rei dos Judeus"; escreva: "Este homem disse: Eu sou o Rei dos Judeus".

22 — O que escrevi escrevi! — respondeu Pilatos.

23 Depois que os soldados crucificaram Jesus, pegaram as roupas dele e dividiram em quatro partes, uma para cada um. Mas a túnica era sem costura, toda tecida numa só peça de alto a baixo. 24 Por isso os soldados disseram uns aos outros:

— Não vamos rasgar a túnica. Vamos tirar a sorte para ver quem fica com ela.

Isso aconteceu para que se cumprisse o que as Escrituras Sagradas dizem:

"Repartiram entre si as minhas roupas

e fizeram sorteio da minha túnica."

E foi isso o que os soldados fizeram.

25 Perto da cruz de Jesus estavam a sua mãe, e a irmã dela, e Maria, a esposa de Clopas, e também Maria Madalena. 26 Quando Jesus viu a sua mãe e perto dela o discípulo que ele amava, disse a ela:

— Este é o seu filho.

27 Em seguida disse a ele:

— Esta é a sua mãe.

E esse discípulo levou a mãe de Jesus para morar dali em diante na casa dele.

28 Agora Jesus sabia que tudo estava completado. Então, para que se cumprisse o que dizem as Escrituras Sagradas, disse:

— Estou com sede!

29 Havia ali uma vasilha cheia de vinho comum. Molharam no vinho uma esponja, puseram a esponja num bastão de hissopo e a encostaram na boca de Jesus. 30 Quando ele tomou o vinho, disse:

— Tudo está completado!

Então baixou a cabeça e morreu.

31 Então os líderes judeus pediram a Pilatos que mandasse quebrar as pernas dos que tinham sido crucificados e mandasse tirá-los das cruzes. Pediram isso porque era sexta-feira e não queriam que, no sábado, os corpos ainda estivessem nas cruzes. E aquele sábado era especialmente santo. 32 Os soldados foram e quebraram as pernas do primeiro homem que tinha sido crucificado com Jesus e depois quebraram as pernas do outro. 33 Mas, quando chegaram perto de Jesus, viram que ele já estava morto e não quebraram as suas pernas. 34 Porém um dos soldados furou o lado de Jesus com uma lança. No mesmo instante saiu sangue e água.

35 Quem viu isso contou o que aconteceu para que vocês também creiam. O que ele disse é verdade, e ele sabe que fala a verdade. 36 Isso aconteceu para que se cumprisse o que as Escrituras Sagradas dizem: "Nenhum dos seus ossos será quebrado." 37 E em outro lugar as Escrituras Sagradas dizem: "Eles olharão para aquele a quem atravessaram com a lança."

38 Depois disso, José, da cidade de Arimateia, pediu licença a Pilatos para levar o corpo de Jesus. (José era seguidor de Jesus, mas em segredo porque tinha medo dos líderes judeus.) Pilatos deu licença, e José foi e retirou o corpo de Jesus. 39 Nicodemos, aquele que tinha ido falar com Jesus à noite, foi com José, levando uns trinta e cinco quilos de uma mistura de aloés e mirra. 40 Os dois homens pegaram o corpo de Jesus e o enrolaram em lençóis nos quais haviam espalhado essa mistura. Era assim que os judeus preparavam os corpos dos mortos para serem sepultados.

41 No lugar onde Jesus tinha sido crucificado havia um jardim com um túmulo novo onde ninguém ainda tinha sido colocado. 42 Puseram ali o corpo de Jesus porque o túmulo ficava perto e também porque o sábado dos judeus ia começar logo .
