1 Now Korah the son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, and Dathan and Abi'ram the sons of Eli'ab, and On the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben,2 took men; and they rose up before Moses, with a number of the people of Israel, two hundred and fifty leaders of the congregation, chosen from the assembly, well-known men;3 and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said to them, "You have gone too far! For all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them; why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?"4 When Moses heard it, he fell on his face;5 and he said to Korah and all his company, "In the morning the LORD will show who is his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near to him; him whom he will choose he will cause to come near to him.6 Do this: take censers, Korah and all his company;7 put fire in them and put incense upon them before the LORD tomorrow, and the man whom the LORD chooses shall be the holy one. You have gone too far, sons of Levi!"8 And Moses said to Korah, "Hear now, you sons of Levi:9 is it too small a thing for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do service in the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them;10 and that he has brought you near him, and all your brethren the sons of Levi with you? And would you seek the priesthood also?11 Therefore it is against the LORD that you and all your company have gathered together; what is Aaron that you murmur against him?"12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abi'ram the sons of Eli'ab; and they said, "We will not come up.13 Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that you must also make yourself a prince over us?14 Moreover you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up."15 And Moses was very angry, and said to the LORD, "Do not respect their offering. I have not taken one ass from them, and I have not harmed one of them."16 And Moses said to Korah, "Be present, you and all your company, before the LORD, you and they, and Aaron, tomorrow;17 and let every one of you take his censer, and put incense upon it, and every one of you bring before the LORD his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; you also, and Aaron, each his censer."18 So every man took his censer, and they put fire in them and laid incense upon them, and they stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron.19 Then Korah assembled all the congregation against them at the entrance of the tent of meeting. And the glory of the LORD appeared to all the congregation.20 And the LORD said to Moses and to Aaron,21 "Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment."22 And they fell on their faces, and said, "O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be angry with all the congregation?"23 And the LORD said to Moses,24 "Say to the congregation, Get away from about the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abi'ram."25 Then Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abi'ram; and the elders of Israel followed him.26 And he said to the congregation, "Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be swept away with all their sins."27 So they got away from about the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abi'ram; and Dathan and Abi'ram came out and stood at the door of their tents, together with their wives, their sons, and their little ones.28 And Moses said, "Hereby you shall know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works, and that it has not been of my own accord.29 If these men die the common death of all men, or if they are visited by the fate of all men, then the LORD has not sent me.30 But if the LORD creates something new, and the ground opens its mouth, and swallows them up, with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into Sheol, then you shall know that these men have despised the LORD."31 And as he finished speaking all these words, the ground under them split asunder;32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and all the men that belonged to Korah and all their goods.33 So they and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol; and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at their cry; for they said, "Lest the earth swallow us up!"35 And fire came forth from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men offering the incense.36 Then the LORD said to Moses,37 "Tell Elea'zar the son of Aaron the priest to take up the censers out of the blaze; then scatter the fire far and wide. For they are holy,38 the censers of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives; so let them be made into hammered plates as a covering for the altar, for they offered them before the LORD; therefore they are holy. Thus they shall be a sign to the people of Israel."39 So Elea'zar the priest took the bronze censers, which those who were burned had offered; and they were hammered out as a covering for the altar,40 to be a reminder to the people of Israel, so that no one who is not a priest, who is not of the descendants of Aaron, should draw near to burn incense before the LORD, lest he become as Korah and as his company--as the LORD said to Elea'zar through Moses.41 But on the morrow all the congregation of the people of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, "You have killed the people of the LORD."42 And when the congregation had assembled against Moses and against Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meeting; and behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.43 And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting,44 and the LORD said to Moses,45 "Get away from the midst of this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment." And they fell on their faces.46 And Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense on it, and carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone forth from the LORD, the plague has begun."47 So Aaron took it as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and behold, the plague had already begun among the people; and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.48 And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stopped.49 Now those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those who died in the affair of Korah.50 And Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, when the plague was stopped.

1,2 Corá, filho de Isar, do grupo de famílias levitas de Coate, teve o atrevimento de se revoltar contra Moisés. Ele se juntou com três homens da tribo de Rúben. Dois deles eram filhos de Eliabe e se chamavam Datã e Abirão; o outro era Om, filho de Pelete. E Corá também chamou mais duzentos e cinquenta israelitas de fama, que eram líderes escolhidos pelo povo. 3 Eles foram juntos falar com Moisés e Arão e disseram:

— Agora chega! Todo o povo pertence a Deus, o Senhor. Cada um deles é de Deus, e o Senhor está no meio deles. Então por que vocês querem mandar no povo de Deus?

4 Quando Moisés ouviu isso, ajoelhou-se, encostou o rosto no chão 5 e disse o seguinte a Corá e a todos os seus seguidores:

— Amanhã cedo o Senhor Deus nos mostrará quem é dele e quem foi separado para o seu serviço. Deus fará com que chegue até o seu altar aquele a quem ele escolheu. 6,7 Amanhã cedo vocês e os seus seguidores pegarão os queimadores de incenso, colocarão brasas e incenso neles e os levarão para o altar. Então veremos qual de nós o Senhor escolheu. E agora chega, levitas!

8 Moisés disse também a Corá:

— Agora escutem, levitas! 9 O Deus de Israel os separou do resto do povo para poderem chegar perto dele, para fazerem o seu serviço na Tenda do Senhor e para realizarem as cerimônias em favor do povo. Será que isso não basta para vocês? 10 Deus deu a você e a todos os outros levitas esse privilégio, e agora vocês estão querendo também ser sacerdotes? 11 Quando vocês reclamam contra Arão, na verdade é contra o Senhor que você e os seus seguidores estão se revoltando.

12 Então Moisés mandou chamar Datã e Abirão, filhos de Eliabe, mas eles responderam aos mensageiros:

— Nós não vamos! 13 Será que não basta você nos ter tirado de uma terra boa e rica a fim de nos fazer morrer neste deserto? E além disso ainda quer mandar em nós? 14 Na verdade você não nos trouxe para uma terra boa e rica, nem nos deu campos e plantações de uvas para serem nossa propriedade; e ainda por cima está querendo nos enganar. Nós não vamos!

15 Então Moisés ficou muito zangado e disse a Deus, o Senhor:

— Não aceites as ofertas desses homens. Eu nunca prejudiquei a nenhum deles, nem tirei deles nem mesmo um jumento!

16 Aí Moisés disse a Corá:

— Amanhã você e os seus duzentos e cinquenta seguidores venham até a Tenda Sagrada. Arão também estará ali. 17 Cada um de vocês pegará o seu queimador de incenso, colocará incenso nele e o levará até o altar.

18 Assim, cada homem pegou o seu queimador de incenso, pôs brasas e incenso nele, e todos ficaram na entrada da Tenda Sagrada com Moisés e Arão. 19 Então Corá reuniu todo o povo, e eles ficaram diante de Moisés e Arão na entrada da Tenda. De repente, a glória do Senhor apareceu a todo o povo, 20 e o Senhor disse a Moisés e a Arão:

21 — Saiam do meio dessa gente, pois eu vou acabar com eles agora mesmo.

22 Mas Moisés e Arão se ajoelharam, encostaram o rosto no chão e disseram:

— Ó Deus, tu dás vida a todos. Será que por causa do pecado de uma só pessoa vais ficar irado com todo o povo?

23 Então o Senhor respondeu a Moisés:

24 — Diga ao povo que saia de perto das barracas de Corá, Datã e Abirão.

25 Aí Moisés saiu e, junto com os líderes do povo, foi para onde estavam Datã e Abirão. 26 E Moisés disse ao povo:

— Afastem-se das barracas desses homens maus e não toquem em nada que seja deles; se não, vocês também serão destruídos por causa dos pecados deles.

27 Aí o povo se afastou das barracas de Corá, Datã e Abirão.

Datã e Abirão saíram e ficaram na entrada da sua barraca, com as suas mulheres e filhos. 28 Então Moisés disse ao povo:

— Eu vou dizer como vocês vão ficar sabendo que não fui eu quem resolveu fazer tudo isso. Fiz todas essas coisas porque o Senhor mandou. 29 Se estes homens tiverem morte natural como todos os outros, sem nenhum castigo de Deus, então o Senhor não me enviou. 30 Mas, se ele fizer acontecer alguma coisa fora do comum, e se a terra se abrir e engolir essa gente com tudo o que eles têm, e eles descerem vivos para o mundo dos mortos, vocês ficarão sabendo que estes homens rejeitaram o Senhor.

31 E aconteceu que, assim que Moisés acabou de falar, a terra se abriu debaixo deles 32 e os engoliu com as suas famílias, junto com todos os seguidores de Corá e tudo o que eles tinham. 33 Assim, desceram vivos para o mundo dos mortos, eles e tudo o que possuíam. A terra os cobriu, e eles desapareceram. 34 Ao ouvirem os gritos deles, todos os israelitas que estavam ali saíram correndo e gritando:

— A terra vai engolir a gente também!

35 Então o Senhor enviou fogo e matou os duzentos e cinquenta homens que haviam oferecido incenso.

36 Aí o Senhor Deus disse a Moisés:

37 — Diga a Eleazar, filho do sacerdote Arão, que pegue os queimadores de incenso do meio dos restos do incêndio e espalhe para longe as brasas que ainda estiverem neles, pois os queimadores de incenso são sagrados. 38 Eles ficaram sagrados quando foram oferecidos no altar do Senhor. Portanto, pegue os queimadores de incenso desses homens que foram mortos por causa dos seus pecados e deles faça folhas finas de metal. E com essas folhas prepare uma cobertura para o altar. Isso será um aviso para o povo de Israel.

39 Então o sacerdote Eleazar pegou os queimadores de incenso de metal que os homens que tinham sido mortos haviam trazido e mandou que deles fossem feitas folhas de metal para cobrir o altar. 40 Conforme o Senhor tinha dito a Moisés, isso ficou sendo um aviso para os israelitas a fim de que nenhuma pessoa que não seja descendente de Arão venha a queimar incenso diante do Senhor e seja castigada, como aconteceu com Corá e com os seus seguidores.

41 Mas no dia seguinte todos os israelitas começaram a reclamar contra Moisés e Arão, dizendo assim:

— Vocês mataram o povo de Deus, o Senhor!

42 Depois que todos se reuniram para protestar contra Moisés e Arão, eles se viraram para a Tenda Sagrada e viram que a nuvem a estava cobrindo. Então a glória do Senhor apareceu. 43 Moisés e Arão foram até a frente da Tenda, 44 e o Senhor disse a Moisés:

45 — Saiam do meio desse povo, pois vou destruí-lo agora mesmo!

Aí Moisés e Arão se ajoelharam e encostaram o rosto no chão. 46 E Moisés disse a Arão:

— Pegue o seu queimador de incenso, ponha nele algumas brasas do altar e jogue incenso em cima delas. E vá depressa até o lugar onde o povo está e ofereça o sacrifício para conseguir o perdão dos pecados deles. Depressa! A ira do Senhor apareceu, e já começou a epidemia!

47 Então Arão pegou o queimador de incenso, conforme Moisés havia mandado, e correu para o meio do povo. Quando viu que a epidemia já havia começado, Arão jogou o incenso nas brasas e ofereceu o sacrifício para conseguir o perdão dos pecados do povo. 48 Com isso a epidemia parou, e Arão ficou de pé entre os vivos e os mortos. 49 Naquela epidemia morreram catorze mil e setecentas pessoas, fora as que morreram na revolta de Corá. 50 Quando acabou a epidemia, Arão voltou para a entrada da Tenda, onde Moisés estava.
