1 When the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the Negeb, heard that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive.2 And Israel vowed a vow to the LORD, and said, "If thou wilt indeed give this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities."3 And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and gave over the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities; so the name of the place was called Hormah.4 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the people became impatient on the way.5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food."6 Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.7 And the people came to Moses, and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you; pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people.8 And the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and every one who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live."9 So Moses made a bronze serpent, and set it on a pole; and if a serpent bit any man, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.10 And the people of Israel set out, and encamped in Oboth.11 And they set out from Oboth, and encamped at I'ye-ab'arim, in the wilderness which is opposite Moab, toward the sunrise.12 From there they set out, and encamped in the Valley of Zered.13 From there they set out, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that extends from the boundary of the Amorites; for the Arnon is the boundary of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.14 Wherefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the LORD, "Waheb in Suphah, and the valleys of the Arnon,15 and the slope of the valleys that extends to the seat of Ar, and leans to the border of Moab."16 And from there they continued to Beer; that is the well of which the LORD said to Moses, "Gather the people together, and I will give them water."17 Then Israel sang this song: "Spring up, O well!--Sing to it!--18 the well which the princes dug, which the nobles of the people delved, with the scepter and with their staves." And from the wilderness they went on to Mat'tanah,19 and from Mat'tanah to Nahal'iel, and from Nahal'iel to Bamoth,20 and from Bamoth to the valley lying in the region of Moab by the top of Pisgah which looks down upon the desert.21 Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,22 "Let me pass through your land; we will not turn aside into field or vineyard; we will not drink the water of a well; we will go by the King's Highway, until we have passed through your territory."23 But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. He gathered all his men together, and went out against Israel to the wilderness, and came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.24 And Israel slew him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as to the Ammonites; for Jazer was the boundary of the Ammonites.25 And Israel took all these cities, and Israel settled in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages.26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land out of his hand, as far as the Arnon.27 Therefore the ballad singers say, "Come to Heshbon, let it be built, let the city of Sihon be established.28 For fire went forth from Heshbon, flame from the city of Sihon. It devoured Ar of Moab, the lords of the heights of the Arnon.29 Woe to you, O Moab! You are undone, O people of Chemosh! He has made his sons fugitives, and his daughters captives, to an Amorite king, Sihon.30 So their posterity perished from Heshbon, as far as Dibon, and we laid waste until fire spread to Med'eba."31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.32 And Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took its villages, and dispossessed the Amorites that were there.33 Then they turned and went up by the way to Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan came out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Ed're-i.34 But the LORD said to Moses, "Do not fear him; for I have given him into your hand, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon."35 So they slew him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was not one survivor left to him; and they possessed his land.

1 O rei cananeu de Arade, que morava na região sul de Canaã, soube que o povo de Israel vinha pelo caminho de Atarim. Ele atacou os israelitas e levou alguns deles como prisioneiros. 2 Então o povo de Israel prometeu a Deus, o Senhor, o seguinte:

3 O Senhor ouviu o pedido do povo de Israel e os ajudou a derrotar os cananeus. Assim, os israelitas os destruíram e também destruíram as suas cidades. E deram àquele lugar o nome de Horma .

4 Então os israelitas saíram do monte Hor pelo caminho que vai até o golfo de Ácaba, para dar a volta em redor da região de Edom. Mas no caminho o povo perdeu a paciência 5 e começou a falar contra Deus e contra Moisés. Eles diziam:

— Por que Deus e Moisés nos tiraram do Egito? Será que foi para morrermos no deserto, onde não há pão nem água? Já estamos cansados desta comida horrível!

6 Aí o Senhor Deus mandou cobras venenosas que se espalharam no meio do povo; e elas morderam e mataram muitos israelitas. 7 Então o povo foi falar com Moisés e disse:

— Nós pecamos, pois falamos contra Deus, o Senhor, e contra você. Peça a Deus que tire essas cobras que estão no meio da gente.

Moisés orou ao Senhor em favor do povo, 8 e ele disse:

— Faça uma cobra de metal e pregue num poste. Quem for mordido deverá olhar para ela e assim ficará curado.

9 Então Moisés fez uma cobra de bronze e pregou num poste. Quando alguém era mordido por uma cobra, olhava para a cobra de bronze e ficava curado.

10 Aí os israelitas partiram e acamparam em Obote. 11 Depois saíram de Obote e acamparam nas ruínas de Abarim, no deserto, a leste do território de Moabe. 12 E partiram dali e acamparam no vale de Zerede. 13 Dali eles saíram e acamparam na margem norte do rio Arnom, no deserto que vai até o território dos amorreus (O rio Arnom é a divisa do território de Moabe com o dos amorreus.). 14 É por isso que O Livro das Batalhas do Senhor Deus diz assim: "…a cidade de Vaebe, na região de Sufa, e os vales; o rio Arnom 15 e a descida dos vales que vão até a cidade de Ar, na direção da fronteira com Moabe." 16 Dali eles foram para um lugar chamado Beer , onde o Senhor disse a Moisés:

— Reúna o povo, e eu darei água a todos.

17 Então o povo de Israel cantou esta canção:

"Ó poço, faça brotar a sua água,

e nós a saudaremos com uma canção!

18 Este poço foi cavado pelos líderes,

foi aberto pelos chefes do povo,

com os seus bastões de comando

e com os seus bordões."

Do deserto eles foram para Matana. 19 De Matana foram para Naaliel, de Naaliel para Bamote 20 e de Bamote para o vale que fica no território de Moabe, abaixo do pico do monte Pisga, de onde se avista o deserto.

21 Então o povo de Israel mandou mensageiros para dizerem a Seom, o rei dos amorreus, o seguinte:

22 — Deixe-nos passar pelo seu país. Não passaremos pelos campos, nem pelas plantações de uvas. Não beberemos água dos poços; caminharemos somente pela estrada principal até sairmos do seu país.

23 Porém Seom não deixou que o povo de Israel passasse pelo seu país. Pelo contrário, ele reuniu toda a sua gente e saiu para enfrentar o povo de Israel no deserto. Seom foi até Jasa e combateu contra os israelitas. 24 Mas na batalha eles mataram à espada muitos amorreus e tomaram a terra deles, desde o rio Arnom até o rio Jaboque, na fronteira com o país de Amom, na qual havia muralhas. 25 Assim, os israelitas tomaram todas essas cidades dos amorreus e ficaram morando nelas, isto é, em Hesbom e nos povoados que ficavam ao seu redor. 26 Hesbom era a cidade onde morava Seom, o rei dos amorreus. Ele tinha lutado contra o antigo rei moabita que havia tomado toda a sua terra até o rio Arnom. 27 É por isso que os poetas dizem assim:

"Venham a Hesbom,

a cidade do rei Seom!

Ela será construída de novo,

a cidade de Seom será bem-construída.

28 Pois saiu fogo de Hesbom,

saiu uma chama da cidade do rei Seom.

O exército foi o fogo que destruiu

a cidade de Ar, em Moabe,

e devorou os montes do alto Arnom.

29 Ai de vocês, moradores de Moabe!

Adoradores do deus Quemos,

vocês estão perdidos!

O seu deus deixou

que os seus soldados fugissem

e que as suas filhas fossem entregues

para serem escravas de Seom,

o rei dos amorreus.

30 Mas agora acabou o poder de Hesbom;

de Hesbom até Dibom,

tudo está destruído.

Nofa está em ruínas,

e o fogo chegou até Medeba."

31 Assim, os israelitas ficaram morando na terra dos amorreus. 32 Depois Moisés mandou gente para espionar a cidade de Jazer. Em seguida conquistaram os povoados que ficavam ao redor de Jazer e expulsaram todos os amorreus que moravam ali.

33 Então os israelitas voltaram e subiram pelo caminho de Basã. E Ogue, rei de Basã, saiu para atacá-los em Edrei. 34 O Senhor Deus disse a Moisés:

— Não tenha medo dele, pois vou entregar nas suas mãos o rei, o seu povo e a sua terra. E você deverá fazer com ele o mesmo que fez com Seom, o rei dos amorreus, que morava em Hesbom.

35 Assim, os israelitas mataram Ogue, os seus filhos e todo o seu povo; não escapou ninguém. E tomaram a terra deles.
