1 Then all the congregation raised a loud cry; and the people wept that night.2 And all the people of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron; the whole congregation said to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!3 Why does the LORD bring us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey; would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?"4 And they said to one another, "Let us choose a captain, and go back to Egypt."5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel.6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephun'neh, who were among those who had spied out the land, rent their clothes,7 and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, "The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.8 If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows with milk and honey.9 Only, do not rebel against the LORD; and do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us; their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them."10 But all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.11 And the LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs which I have wrought among them?12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they."13 But Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for thou didst bring up this people in thy might from among them,14 and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that thou, O LORD, art in the midst of this people; for thou, O LORD, art seen face to face, and thy cloud stands over them and thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.15 Now if thou dost kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard thy fame will say,16 `Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to give to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.'17 And now, I pray thee, let the power of the LORD be great as thou hast promised, saying,18 `The LORD is slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of fathers upon children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.'19 Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray thee, according to the greatness of thy steadfast love, and according as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now."20 Then the LORD said, "I have pardoned, according to your word;21 but truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD,22 none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the proof these ten times and have not hearkened to my voice,23 shall see the land which I swore to give to their fathers; and none of those who despised me shall see it.24 But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it.25 Now, since the Amal'ekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea."26 And the LORD said to Moses and to Aaron,27 "How long shall this wicked congregation murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the people of Israel, which they murmur against me.28 Say to them, `As I live,' says the LORD, `what you have said in my hearing I will do to you:29 your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and of all your number, numbered from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me,30 not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephun'neh and Joshua the son of Nun.31 But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised.32 But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.33 And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness.34 According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for every day a year, you shall bear your iniquity, forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.'35 I, the LORD, have spoken; surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die."36 And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him by bringing up an evil report against the land,37 the men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by plague before the LORD.38 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephun'neh remained alive, of those men who went to spy out the land.39 And Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.40 And they rose early in the morning, and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, "See, we are here, we will go up to the place which the LORD has promised; for we have sinned."41 But Moses said, "Why now are you transgressing the command of the LORD, for that will not succeed?42 Do not go up lest you be struck down before your enemies, for the LORD is not among you.43 For there the Amal'ekites and the Canaanites are before you, and you shall fall by the sword; because you have turned back from following the LORD, the LORD will not be with you."44 But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD, nor Moses, departed out of the camp.45 Then the Amal'ekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that hill country came down, and defeated them and pursued them, even to Hormah.

1 Então, naquela noite, todo o povo gritou e chorou. 2 Todos os israelitas reclamaram contra Moisés e Arão e disseram:

— Seria melhor se tivéssemos morrido no Egito ou mesmo neste deserto! 3 Por que será que o Senhor Deus nos trouxe para esta terra? Nós vamos ser mortos na guerra, e as nossas mulheres e os nossos filhos vão ser presos. Seria bem melhor voltarmos para o Egito!

4 E diziam uns aos outros:

— Vamos escolher outro líder e voltemos para o Egito!

5 Então Moisés e Arão se ajoelharam e encostaram o rosto no chão diante de todo o povo. 6 E Josué, filho de Num, e Calebe, filho de Jefoné, dois dos líderes que haviam espionado a terra, rasgaram as suas roupas em sinal de tristeza 7 e disseram ao povo:

— A terra que fomos espionar é muito boa mesmo. 8 Se o Senhor Deus nos ajudar, ele fará com que entremos nela e nos dará aquela terra, uma terra boa e rica. 9 Porém não sejam rebeldes contra o Senhor e não tenham medo do povo daquela terra. Nós os venceremos com facilidade. O Senhor está com a gente e derrotou os deuses que os protegiam. Portanto, não tenham medo.

10 Apesar disso o povo ameaçou matá-los a pedradas, mas, de repente, todos viram a glória do Senhor aparecer sobre a Tenda Sagrada.

11 O Senhor Deus disse a Moisés:

— Até quando este povo vai me rejeitar? Até quando não vão crer em mim, embora eu tenha feito tantos milagres entre eles? 12 Vou mandar uma epidemia para acabar com eles, porém farei com que os descendentes de você sejam um povo maior e mais forte do que eles.

13 Mas Moisés respondeu ao Senhor:

— Com o teu poder tiraste do Egito esta gente. Quando os egípcios souberem do que vais fazer com este povo, 14 eles contarão isso aos moradores desta terra. Estes já sabem que tu, ó Senhor Deus, estás com a gente e que és visto claramente quando a tua nuvem para sobre nós. E sabem também que vais adiante de nós numa coluna de nuvem de dia e numa coluna de fogo de noite. 15 Se matares o teu povo, as nações que ouviram falar a respeito da tua fama vão dizer 16 que mataste o teu povo no deserto porque não pudeste levá-lo para a terra que prometeste dar a ele. 17 Agora, Senhor, eu te peço que mostres o teu poder e que faças o que prometeste quando disseste: 18 "Eu, o Senhor, tenho paciência e muita compaixão; eu perdoo a maldade e o pecado, porém não trato o culpado como se fosse inocente. Eu faço com que o castigo dos pecados dos pais caia sobre os seus descendentes, até os bisnetos e trinetos." 19 E agora eu te peço, ó Deus, que perdoes o pecado deste povo, de acordo com a tua grande misericórdia, como já tens feito desde o Egito até aqui.

20 O Senhor Deus disse:

— Já que você pediu, eu perdoo. 21 Mas, pela minha vida e pela minha presença gloriosa que enche toda a terra, juro que 22 nenhum desses homens viverá para entrar naquela terra. Eles viram a minha glória e os milagres que fiz no Egito e no deserto. No entanto dez vezes puseram à prova a minha paciência e não quiseram me obedecer. 23 Eles nunca entrarão na terra que jurei dar aos seus antepassados. Nenhum daqueles que me abandonaram verá aquela terra. 24 Mas o meu servo Calebe tem um espírito diferente e sempre tem sido fiel a mim. Por isso eu farei com que ele entre na terra que espionou, e os seus descendentes vão possuir aquela terra. 25 Agora os amalequitas e os cananeus estão morando nos vales; portanto, amanhã voltem e vão para o deserto, na direção do golfo de Ácaba.

26 O Senhor Deus disse a Moisés e a Arão:

27 — Eu tenho ouvido as reclamações dos israelitas. Até quando vou aguentar esse povo mau, que vive reclamando contra mim? 28 Diga a essa gente o seguinte: "Juro pela minha vida que darei o que vocês me pediram. Sou eu, o Senhor, quem está falando. 29 Vocês serão mortos, e os corpos de vocês serão espalhados pelo deserto. Vocês reclamaram contra mim, e por isso nenhum de vocês que tem vinte anos de idade ou mais entrará naquela terra. 30 Eu jurei que os faria morar lá, mas nenhum de vocês entrará naquela terra, a não ser Calebe, filho de Jefoné, e Josué, filho de Num. 31 Vocês disseram que os seus filhos seriam presos, mas eu vou levar esses filhos para a terra que vocês rejeitaram, e ali será o lar deles. 32 Porém vocês morrerão, e os corpos de vocês ficarão neste deserto, 33 onde os seus filhos vão caminhar quarenta anos. Vocês foram infiéis, e por isso eles vão sofrer, até que todos vocês morram aqui. 34 Quarenta anos vocês vão sofrer por causa dos seus pecados, conforme os quarenta dias que vocês espionaram a terra, um ano para cada dia. Vocês vão saber o que é ficar contra mim. 35 É isto o que vou fazer com todo este povo mau que se revoltou contra mim: todos vocês morrerão e serão destruídos neste deserto. Eu, o Senhor, falei."

36,37 Os homens que Moisés havia mandado para espionar a terra trouxeram más informações a respeito dela. E, quando voltaram, fizeram com que o povo reclamasse contra Moisés. Por isso o Senhor fez com que fossem atacados por uma doença, e eles morreram. 38 Dos doze homens que foram espionar a terra, somente Josué e Calebe ficaram vivos.

39 Os israelitas ficaram muito tristes quando Moisés contou o que o Senhor tinha dito. 40 De manhã bem cedo, começaram a entrar na região montanhosa. Eles diziam:

— Agora estamos prontos para ir até o lugar que o Senhor nos havia prometido. De fato, nós pecamos.

41 Porém Moisés respondeu:

— Então por que vocês estão querendo desobedecer à ordem de Deus, o Senhor? Isso não vai dar certo. 42 Não entrem na região montanhosa. O Senhor não está com vocês, e os seus inimigos vão derrotá-los. 43 Os amalequitas e os cananeus estão ali para enfrentá-los e matá-los na batalha. O Senhor não estará com vocês, pois vocês o abandonaram.

44 Mesmo assim os israelitas teimaram em querer entrar na região montanhosa, mas nem a arca da aliança de Deus, o Senhor, nem Moisés saíram do acampamento. 45 Então os amalequitas e os cananeus que moravam naquela região montanhosa atacaram, e derrotaram os israelitas, e os perseguiram até Horma.
