1 Detta lät Herren Gud mig se:

Han skapade gräshoppor när sommargräset började växa upp, sommargräset efter kungsslåttern*7:1kungsslåtternKanske en skatt i hö för kungens vagnshästar (jfr 1 Sam 8:11f, 1 Kung 9:19).. 2 När de hade slukat allt grönt i landet sade jag: "Herre, Herre, förlåt! Hur ska Jakob kunna bestå, han som är så liten?" 3 *1 Mos 18:26, 2 Mos 32:14, Jer 18:8f. Då ångrade Herren detta. "Det ska inte ske", sade Herren.

4 Detta lät Herren Gud mig se:

Jag såg att Herren Gud kallade på elden för att utföra hans sak. Och elden förtärde det stora djupet och höll på att förtära landet. 5 *4 Mos 11:2, Ps 85:5. Då sade jag: "Herre Gud, sluta! Hur ska Jakob kunna bestå, han som är så liten?" 6 Då ångrade Herren detta. "Inte heller detta ska ske", sade Herren Gud.

7 *2 Kung 21:13, Jes 34:11. Detta lät han mig se:

Jag såg Herren stå på en lodrät*7:7lodEtt mätsnöre med en blytyngd i änden som visar om en byggd mur är "lodrät". mur med ett lod i sin hand. 8 *Jes 34:11, Amos 8:2. Och Herren sade till mig: "Vad ser du, Amos?" Jag svarade: "Ett lod." Då sade Herren: "Se, jag ska hänga upp ett lod mitt ibland mitt folk Israel. Jag ska inte skona dem en gång till.

9 *2 Kung 15:10, 12, 17:20f. Isaks offerhöjder ska bli ödelagda och Israels helgedomar förstörda, och mot Jerobeams hus ska jag resa mig med svärdet."

10 *Jer 38:4. Amasja, prästen i Betel, sände bud till Israels kung Jerobeam och lät säga: "Amos konspirerar mot dig mitt ibland Israels folk. Landet står inte ut med allt hans ordande, 11 för Amos har sagt: Jerobeam ska dö för svärd och Israel ska föras bort i fångenskap från sitt land."

12 *1 Sam 9:9, Amos 2:12. Och Amasja sade till Amos: "Du siare, ge dig i väg och fly till Juda land. Tjäna ditt levebröd där och profetera där! 13 I Betel får du inte profetera mer, för det är en kunglig helgedom*7:13kunglig helgedomBetels tempel var instiftat av nordrikets kungar för politiska syften (1 Kung 12:27f) och stod i opposition mot Guds tempel i Jerusalem (2 Krön 11:13f). och ett rikets tempel." 14 *1 Kung 20:35, 2 Kung 2:3f, Amos 1:1, Luk 19:4. Amos svarade Amasja: "Jag är ingen profet, ingen profetlärjunge*7:14profetlärjungeMedlem i organiserad grupp av yrkesprofeter (se t ex 2 Kung 2, 4: 38, 6:1 etc).. Jag är boskapsherde och odlar mullbärsfikon*7:14mullbärsfikonEn enklare sort av fikon som fungerade som fattigmansmat.. 15 *2 Sam 7:8, Jer 1:7. Men Herren tog mig från hjorden och Herren sade till mig: Gå och profetera för mitt folk Israel. 16 *Mika 2:6. Så hör nu Herrens ord:

Du säger:

Profetera inte mot Israel

och tala inte mot Isaks hus.

17 *2 Kung 17:6, 18, 24. Därför säger Herren så:

Din hustru ska bli

en prostituerad i staden,

dina söner och döttrar

ska falla för svärd,

din jord ska utskiftas

med mätsnöre.

Själv ska du dö i ett orent land,

och Israel ska föras bort

i fångenskap från sitt land."

7 Thus he shewed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand. 8 And the LORD said unto me, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more: 9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.

10 Then Amaziah the priest of Beth-el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words. 11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land. 12 Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: 13 But prophesy not again any more at Beth-el: for it is the king’s chapel, and it is the king’s court.*7.13 chapel: or, sanctuary*7.13 king’s court: Heb. house of the kingdom

14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet’s son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:*7.14 sycomore…: or, wild figs 15 And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.*7.15 as…: Heb. from behind

16 Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac. 17 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be an harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.
