1 Disse Jeová a Moisés: Entra a Faraó. Eu endureci o seu coração e o coração dos seus servos, para que eu manifeste estes meus prodígios no meio deles,2 e para que contes aos ouvidos de teus filhos e dos filhos de teus filhos que coisas tenho obrado no Egito, e os meus prodígios que tenho feito no meio deles; a fim de que saibais que eu sou Jeová.3 Entraram, pois, Moisés e Arão a Faraó e lhe disseram: Assim diz Jeová, o Deus dos hebreus: Até quando recusarás humilhar-te diante de mim? deixa ir o meu povo para que me sirva.4 De outra forma se tu recusares deixar ir o meu povo, eis que amanhã trarei gafanhotos aos teus termos,5 eles cobrirão a face da terra, de sorte que a terra não se poderá ver; comerão o restante do que escapou, e que vos resta da chuva de pedras, e comerão toda a árvore que vos cresce no campo.6 Encher-se-ão as tuas casas, e as casas de todos os teus servos, e as casas de todos os egípcios, como nunca viram teus pais nem os pais de teus pais, desde o dia em que nasceram na terra até o dia de hoje. Virou-se e saiu da presença de Faraó.7 Então os servos de Faraó lhe disseram: Até quando nos servirá de laço este homem? deixa ir os homens, para que sirvam a Jeová seu Deus. Porventura não sabes ainda que o Egito está desolado?8 Moisés e Arão foram levados outra vez a Faraó; e ele lhes disse: Ide, servi a Jeová vosso Deus; mas quem são os que hão de ir?9 Respondeu-lhe Moisés: Havemos de ir com os nossos jovens e com os nossos velhos, com nossos filhos e com nossas filhas, com os nossos rebanhos e com os nossos gados havemos de ir, porque temos de celebrar uma festa a Jeová.10 Replicou-lhes Faraó: Assim seja Jeová convosco, como eu vos deixarei ir a vós e a vossos pequeninos; olhai, porque o mal está diante de vós.11 Não há de ser assim; ide agora vós que sois homens, e servi a Jeová; pois é isso o que vós desejais. E foram expulsos da presença de Faraó.12 Disse Jeová a Moisés: Estende a mão sobre a terra do Egito, para que subam os gafanhotos sobre a terra do Egito e comam toda a erva, tudo o que deixou a chuva de pedras.13 Estendeu Moisés a sua vara sobre a terra do Egito, e trouxe Jeová sobre a terra um vento oriental todo aquele dia e toda a noite; quando amanheceu, o vento oriental trouxe os gafanhotos.14 Os gafanhotos subiram sobre a terra do Egito, e sentaram-se em todos os termos do Egito. Mui malignos foram; antes destes nunca houve tais gafanhotos como eles, nem virão depois destes outros tais.15 Pois cobriram a face de toda a terra, de modo que a terra se escureceu; comeram toda a erva da terra e todo o fruto das árvores, que deixara a chuva de pedras; nada verde ficou nas árvores nem nas ervas do campo por toda a terra do Egito.16 Então a toda a pressa mandou Faraó chamar a Moisés e a Arão, e lhes disse: Pequei contra Jeová vosso Deus e contra vós.17 Agora perdoai-me somente esta vez o meu pecado, e rogai a Jeová vosso Deus que tire de mim esta morte somente.18 Tendo Moisés saído da presença de Faraó, rogou a Jeová.19 Jeová fez soprar um forte vento ocidental, que levantou os gafanhotos e os lançou no mar Vermelho; não ficou um só gafanhoto em todos os termos do Egito.20 Mas Jeová endureceu o coração de Faraó, e este não deixou ir os filhos de Israel.21 Disse Jeová a Moisés: Estende a mão para o céu, para que haja trevas sobre a terra do Egito, trevas que se possam apalpar.22 Estendeu, pois, Moisés a mão para o céu; e houve trevas espessas em toda a terra do Egito por três dias;23 não viram uns aos outros, e ninguém se levantou do seu lugar por três dias; porém todos os filhos de Israel tinham luz nas suas habitações.24 Mandou Faraó chamar a Moisés e disse: Ide, servi a Jeová. Fiquem somente os vossos rebanhos e os vossos gados; e vão convosco os vossos pequeninos.25 Respondeu Moisés: Também tu nos tens de dar nas mãos sacrifícios e holocaustos, para que ofereçamos sacrifícios a Jeová nosso Deus.26 Também o nosso gado irá conosco; nem uma unha ficará, porque deles havemos de tomar para servir a Jeová nosso Deus, e nós não sabemos com que havemos de servir a Jeová, até que cheguemos lá.27 Mas Jeová endureceu o coração de Faraó, e este não os quis deixar ir.28 Disse, pois, Faraó a Moisés: Retira-te de mim, guarda-te não vejas mais o meu rosto; porque, no dia em que vires o meu rosto, morrerás.29 Respondeu-lhe Moisés: Falaste bem; eu nunca mais hei de ver o teu rosto.

1 And the Lord said to Moses: Go in to Pharao; for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants: that I may work these my signs in him.2 And thou mayest tell in the ears of thy sons, and of they grandsons, how often I have plagued the Egyptians, and wrought my signs amongst them: and you may know that I am the Lord:3 Therefore Moses and Aaron went in to Pharao, and said to him: Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews: How long refusest thou to submit to me? let my people go, to sacrifice to me.4 But if thou resist, and wilt not let them go, behold I will bring in to morrow the locust into thy coasts:5 To cover the face of the earth that nothing thereof may appear, but that which the hail hath left may be eaten: for they shall feed upon all the trees that spring in the fields.6 And they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of thy servants, and of all the Egyptians: such a number as thy fathers have not seen, nor thy grandfathers, from the time they were first upon the earth, until this present day. And he turned himself away, and went forth from Pharao.7 And Pharao's servants said to him: How long shall we endure this scandal? let the men go to sacrifice to the Lord their God. Dost thou not see that Egypt is undone?8 And they called back Moses and Aaron to Pharao: and he said to them: Go, sacrifice to the Lord your God: who are they that shall go?9 Moses said: We will go with our young and old, with our sons and daughters, with our sheep and herds: for it is the solemnity of the Lord our God.10 And Pharao answered: So be the Lord with you, as I shall let you and your children go: who can doubt but that you intend some great evil?11 It shall not be so: but go ye men only, and sacrifice to the Lord: for this yourselves also desired. And immediately they were cast out from Pharao's presence.12 And the Lord said to Moses: Stretch forth thy hand upon the land of Egypt unto the locust, that it may come upon it, and devour every herb that is left after the hail.13 And Moses stretched forth his rod upon the land of Egypt: and the Lord brought a burning wind all that day, and night: and when it was morning, the burning wind raised the locusts:14 And they came up over the whole land of Egypt: and rested in all the coasts of the Egyptians innumerable, the like as had not been before that time, nor shall be hereafter.15 And they covered the whole face of the earth, wasting all things. And the grass of the earth was devoured, and what fruits soever were on the trees, which the hail had left: and there remained not any thing that was green on the trees, or in the herbs of the earth in all Egypt.16 Wherefore Pharao in haste called Moses and Aaron, and said to them: I have sinned against the Lord your God, and against you.17 But now forgive me my sin this time also, and pray to the Lord your God, that he take away from me this death.18 And Moses going forth from the presence of Pharao, prayed to the Lord.19 And he made a very strong wind to blow from the west, and it took the locusts and cast them into the Red Sea: there remained not so much as one in all the coasts of Egypt.20 And the Lord hardened Pharao's heart, neither did he let the children of Israel go.21 And the Lord said to Moses: Stretch out they hand towards heaven: and may there be darkness upon the land of Egypt, so thick that it may be felt.22 And Moses stretch forth his hand towards heaven: and there came horrible darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days.23 No man saw his brother, nor moved himself out of the place where he was: but wheresoever the children of Israel dwelt there was light.24 And Pharao called Moses and Aaron, and said to them: Go sacrifice to the Lord: let your sheep only, and herds remain; let your children go with you.25 Moses said: Thou shalt give us also sacrifices and burnt offerings, to the Lord our God.26 All the flocks shall go with us: there shall not a hoof remain of them: for they are necessary for the service of the Lord our God: especially as we know not what must be offered, till we come to the very place.27 And the Lord hardened Pharao's heart, and he would not let them go.28 And Pharao said to Moses: Get thee from me, and beware thou see not my face any more: in what day soever thou shalt come in my sight, thou shalt die.29 Moses answered: So shall it be as thou hast spoken, I will not see thy face any more.
