1 Consolai, consolai o meu povo, diz o vosso Deus.2 Falai ao coração de Jerusalém, e clamai-lhe que está acabada a sua milícia, que está perdoada a sua iniqüidade; que já recebeu em dobro da mão de Jeová por todos os seus pecados.3 Eis a voz do que clama: Preparai no deserto o caminho de Jeová, endireitai no ermo uma estrada para o nosso Deus.4 Todo o vale será exaltado, e todo o monte e outeiro será abatido; o torto far-se-á direito, e os lugares escabrosos planos.5 A glória de Jeová se revelará, e toda a carne juntamente a verá; pois a boca de Jeová o disse.6 Eis a voz do que diz: Clama. E respondeu um: Que hei de clamar? Toda a carne é erva, e toda a sua glória como a flor do campo;7 seca-se a erva e cai a flor, porque o hálito de Jeová nela assopra: na verdade o povo é erva.8 Seca-se a erva, cai a flor; mas a palavra do nosso Deus subsistirá para sempre.9 Sobe a um alto monte Sião, tu que anuncias boas novas, levanta a tua voz com força, Jerusalém, tu que anuncias boas novas; levanta-a, não temas; dize às cidades de Judá: Eis aí o vosso Deus!10 Eis que o Senhor Jeová virá como um valente, e o seu braço dominará por ele: eis que o seu galardão está com ele, a sua recompensa diante dele.11 Como pastor ele apascentará o seu rebanho; entre os seus braços ajuntará os cordeirinhos, e os levará no seu seio, e guiará meigamente as paridas.12 Quem mediu as águas com o seu punho, e repartiu os céus a palmos? quem pôs numa medida o pó da terra, e pesou os montes com peso e os outeiros em balanças?13 Quem dirigiu o espírito de Jeová, ou, como seu conselheiro, o ensinou?14 Com quem tomou ele conselho? quem o instruiu e lhe ensinou a vereda do juízo? quem lhe ensinou conhecimento e lhe mostrou o caminho de entendimento?15 Eis que as nações são reputadas como a gota de água que está a cair de um balde, e como o pó miúdo nas balanças: eis que as ilhas são como uma aresta de pó que se levanta.16 Não basta o Líbano para queimar, nem bastam os seus animais para um holocausto.17 Todas as nações são como nada diante dele; são por ele reputadas como se não fossem e como caos.18 A quem, pois, podeis assemelhar a Deus? ou que figura podeis comparar a ele?19 A imagem esculpida o artífice a funde, o ourives a cobre de ouro e forja para ela cadeias de prata.20 Quem se acha sem recursos para fazer uma tal oferta, escolhe uma madeira que não se corrompa; procura para si um artífice perito para erigir uma imagem esculpida que não se possa mover.21 Acaso não sabeis? acaso não ouvis? não se vos tem sido notificado desde o princípio? não tendes entendido desde as fundações da terra?22 É ele o que está sentado sobre a redondeza da terra, cujos habitantes são como gafanhotos; é ele o que estende os céus como uma cortina, e os desenrola como uma tenda para neles habitar;23 é ele o que reduz a nada os príncipes e torna em caos os juízes da terra.24 Na verdade não foram semeados; não foram mesmo semeados; não se arraigou o seu tronco; demais ele assopra, eles se secam e a tempestade os leva como palha.25 A quem, pois, me assemelhareis, para que eu lhe seja igual? diz o Santo.26 Levantai ao alto os vossos olhos, e vede. Quem criou estes? Foi aquele que faz sair um por um o exército deles; ele os chama a todos pelos seus nomes; por ser ele grande em força e forte em poder nem um só vem a faltar.27 Porque dizes, ó Jacó, e falas, ó Israel: O meu caminho está escondido a Jeová, e o meu juízo passa desapercebido ao meu Deus?28 Acaso não sabes? acaso não ouves? o sempiterno Deus, Jeová, Criador dos fins da terra, não desfalece nem se cansa; não se pode esquadrinhar o seu entendimento.29 Ele dá força ao cansado e aumenta fortaleza ao que se acha debilitado.30 Os jovens desfalecerão e se cansarão, e os mancebos cairão;31 porém os que esperam em Jeová renovarão as suas forças; subirão com asas como águias; correrão, e não se cansarão; andarão, e não desfalecerão.

1 Be comforted, be comforted, my people, saith your God.2 Speak ye to the heart of Jerusalem, and call to her: for her evil is come to an end, her iniquity is forgiven: she hath received of the hand of the Lord double for all her sins.3 The voice of one crying in the desert: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the wilderness the paths of our God.4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straight, and the rough ways plain.5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh together shall see, that the mouth of the Lord hath spoken.6 The voice of one, saying: Cry. And I said: What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the glory thereof as the flower of the held.7 The grass is withered, and the dower is fallen, because the spirit of the Lord hath blown upon it. Indeed the people is grass:8 The grass is withered, and the flower is fallen: but the word of our Lord endureth for ever.9 Get thee up upon a high mountain, thou that bringest good tidings to Sion: lift up thy voice with strength, thou that bringest good tidings to Jerusalem: lift it up, fear not. Say to the cities of Juda: Behold your God:10 Behold the Lord God shall come with strength, and his arm shall rule: Behold his reward is with him and his work is before him.11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather together the lambs with his arm, and shall take them up in his bosom, and he himself shall carry them that are with young.12 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and weighed the heavens with his palm? who hath poised with three fingers the bulk of the earth, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?13 Who hath forwarded the spirit of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor, and hath taught him?14 With whom hath he consulted, and who hath instructed him, and taught him the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and shewed him the way of understanding?15 Behold the Gentiles are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the smallest grain of a balance: behold the islands are as a little dust.16 And Libanus shall not be enough to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering.17 All nations are before him as if they had no being at all, and are counted to him as nothing, and vanity.18 To whom then have you likened God? or what image will you make for him?19 Hath the workman cast a graven statue? or hath the goldsmith formed it with gold, or the silversmith with plates of silver?20 He hath chosen strong wood, and that will not rot: the skilful workman seeketh how he may set up an idol that may not be moved.21 Do you not know? hath it not been heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have you not understood the foundations of the earth ?22 It is he that sitteth upon the globe of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as locusts: he that stretcheth out the heavens as nothing, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.23 He that bringeth the searchers of secrets to nothing, that hath made the judges of the earth as vanity.24 And surely their stock was neither planted, nor sown, nor rooted in the earth: suddenly he hath blown upon them, and they are withered, and a whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.25 And to whom have ye likened me, or made me equal, saith the Holy One?26 Lift up your eyes on high, and see who hath created these things: who bringeth out their host by number, and calleth them all by their names: by the greatness of his might, and strength, and power, not one of them was missing.27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel: My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God?28 Knowest thou not, or hast thou not heard? the Lord is the everlasting God, who hath created the ends of the earth: he shall not faint, nor labour, neither is there any searching out of his wisdom.29 It is he that giveth strength to the weary, and increaseth force and might to them that are not.30 Youths shall faint, and labour, and young men shall fall by infirmity.31 But they that hope in the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall take wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
