1 Eu Paulo, por minha parte, vos exorto pela mansidão e clemência de Cristo, eu que, estando presente, sou humilde entre vós, porém estando ausente, sou ousado para convosco;2 sim, vos rogo que, estando eu presente, não seja ousado com a confiança com que me proponho ser atrevido para com alguns que nos julgam, como se andássemos segundo a carne.3 Pois, vivendo na carne, não militamos segundo a carne4 (porque as armas da nossa milícia não são carnais, mas poderosas em Deus para demolição de fortalezas),5 derribando raciocínios e toda a altura que se levanta contra a ciência de Deus, e levando a cativeiro todo o pensamento para a obediência a Cristo,6 e estando prontos para punir toda a desobediência, quando a vossa obediência for cumprida.7 Olhais as coisas segundo a aparência. Se alguém confia em si que é de Cristo, julgue isto consigo outra vez, que, assim como ele é de Cristo, assim também nós o somos.8 Pois mesmo se me gloriar algum tanto mais acerca da nossa autoridade, que o Senhor deu para edificação, e não para destruição vossa, não serei envergonhado,9 para que não pareça querer eu atemorizar-vos por minhas cartas.10 Pois, na verdade, as suas cartas, dizem, são graves e fortes, mas sua presença corporal é fraca, e a sua palavra desprezível.11 Considere o tal isto, que quais somos em palavras por cartas quando ausentes, tais também seremos em ações, quando presentes.12 Não ousamos contar-nos entre alguns que se louvam a si mesmos, nem comparar-nos com eles; mas eles, medindo-se entre si mesmos e comparando-se consigo mesmos, não têm inteligência.13 Porém não nos gloriaremos além da medida, mas conforme a medida da esfera que Deus nos proporcionou como medida para chegarmos mesmo até vós.14 Não nos estendemos além dos nossos limites, como se não chegássemos a vós, pois até vós chegamos antes de qualquer outro no Evangelho de Cristo;15 não nos gloriando além da medida em trabalhos alheios, mas tendo esperança, à proporção que cresce a vossa fé, de sermos cada vez mais magnificados em vós conforme a nossa esfera,16 para pregarmos o Evangelho nas regiões além de vós, e não nos gloriarmos em esfera alheia de coisas já feitas.17 Aquele que se gloria, glorie-se no Senhor.18 Pois não é aprovado aquele que se recomenda a si mesmo, mas aquele que o Senhor recomenda.

1 Now I myself, Paul, plead with you with the gentleness and kindness of Christ—I who am humble when I am face to face with you but forceful toward you when I am away!2 I beg you that when I come I will not need to be courageous by daring to oppose some people who think that we are living according to the flesh.3 Of course, we are living in the flesh, but we do not fight in a fleshly way.4 For the weapons of our warfare are not those of the flesh. Instead, they have the power of God to demolish fortresses. We tear down arguments5 and every proud obstacle that is raised against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive in order to obey Christ.6 We are ready to punish every act of disobedience when your obedience is complete.7 Look at the plain facts! If anyone is confident that he belongs to Christ, he should remind himself of this: Just as he belongs to Christ, so do we.8 So if I boast a little too much about our authority, which the Lord gave us to build you up and not to tear you down, I will not be ashamed of it.9 I do not want you to think that I am trying to frighten you with my letters.10 For someone is saying, "His letters are impressive and forceful, but his bodily presence is weak and his speech contemptible."11 Someone like this should take note of the following: What we say by letter when we are absent is what we will do when present!12 We would not dare put ourselves in the same class with or compare ourselves to those who recommend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves to themselves, they show how foolish they are.13 We will not boast about what cannot be evaluated. Instead, we will stay within the field that God assigned us, so as to reach even you.14 For it is not as though we were overstepping our limits when we came to you. We were the first to reach you with the gospel of Christ.15 We are not boasting about the work done by others that cannot be evaluated. On the contrary, we cherish the hope that your faith may continue to grow and enlarge our sphere of action among you until it overflows.16 Then we can preach the gospel in the regions far beyond you without boasting about things already accomplished by someone else.17 "The person who boasts must boast in the Lord."18 It is not the person who commends himself who is approved, but the person whom the Lord commends.
