1 Por isso, deixando a doutrina dos princípios elementares de Cristo, passemos à perfeição, não lançando de novo o fundamento de arrependimento de obras mortas, e de fé em Deus,2 o ensino sobre batismos e imposição de mãos, sobre ressurreição de mortos, e sobre juízo eterno.3 Isso faremos, se Deus o permitir.4 Pois é impossível que os que uma vez foram iluminados e provaram o dom celestial, e se tornaram participantes do Espírito Santo,5 e provaram a boa palavra de Deus, e os poderes do mundo vindouro,6 e depois caíram; impossível é renová-los outra vez para o arrependimento, visto que eles crucificam de novo para si o Filho de Deus e o expõem à ignomínia.7 Pois a terra que tem embebido a chuva que cai muitas vezes sobre ela e produz ervas úteis àquelas por quem é também lavrada, recebe de Deus a bênção;8 mas se produz espinhos e abrolhos, é rejeitada, está perto de maldição, e o seu fim é ser queimada.9 Porém quanto a vós, amados, estamos persuadidos de coisas melhores e mais vizinhas à salvação, ainda que assim falamos.10 Pois Deus não é injusto para se esquecer do vosso trabalho e da caridade que mostrastes para com seu nome, quando servistes e ainda servis aos santos.11 Desejamos que cada um de vós mostre o mesmo zelo, para complemento da sua esperança até o fim;12 para que não vos torneis indolentes, mas imitadores daqueles que por fé e por paciência herdam as promessas.13 Pois quando Deus fez a promessa a Abraão, como não teve outro maior, por quem jurasse, jurou por si mesmo,14 dizendo: Certamente abençoando te abençoarei, e multiplicando te multiplicarei;15 assim tendo Abraão esperado com paciência, alcançou a promessa.16 Pois os homens juram pelo que é maior que eles, e o juramento para confirmação é para eles o fim de todas as contendas.17 Por isso Deus, determinando mais abundantemente mostrar aos herdeiros da promessa a imutabilidade do seu conselho, interpôs um juramento,18 para que por duas coisas imutáveis, nas quais é impossível que Deus minta, tenhamos uma poderosa consolação, nós que como refúgio nos temos apressado em lançar mão da esperança proposta,19 a qual temos como âncora segura e firme da alma, e que entra também no interior do véo,20 aonde Jesus, como precursor, entrou por nós, quando se tornou sumo sacerdote para sempre segundo a ordem de Melquisedeque.

1 Therefore, leaving behind the elementary teachings about Christ, let us continue to be carried along to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works, faith toward God,2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.3 And this we will do, if God permits.4 For it is impossible to keep on restoring to repentance time and again people who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have become sharers of the Holy Spirit,5 who have tasted the goodness of God's word and the powers of the coming age,6 and who have fallen away, as long as they continue to crucify to themselves the Son of God and to expose him to public ridicule.7 For when the ground soaks up rain that often falls on it and continues producing vegetation useful to those for whom it is cultivated, it receives a blessing from God.8 However, if it continues to produce thorns and thistles, it is worthless and in danger of being cursed, and in the end will be burned.9 Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case, things that point to salvation.10 For God is not so unjust as to forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have ministered to the saints and continue to minister to them.11 But we want each of you to continue to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to give full assurance to your hope.12 Then, instead of being lazy, you will become imitators of those who are inheriting the promises through faith and patience.13 For when God made his promise to Abraham, he swore an oath by himself, since he had no one greater to swear by.14 He said, "I will certainly bless you and give you many descendants."15 And so he obtained the promise, because he patiently waited for it.16 For people swear by someone greater than themselves, and an oath given as confirmation puts an end to all argument.17 In the same way, when God wanted to make the unchangeable character of his purpose perfectly clear to the heirs of his promise, he guaranteed it with an oath,18 so that by these two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to prove false, we who have taken refuge in him might have a strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us.19 We have this hope as an anchor for our souls, firm and secure, which reaches behind the curtain,20 where Jesus, our forerunner, has gone on our behalf, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
