1 {mas Jesus foi para o monte das Oliveiras.}2 {De madrugada voltou ao templo, e todo o povo ia ter com ele; e Jesus, sentando-se, o ensinava.}3 {Os escribas e os fariseus trouxeram uma mulher apanhada em adultério, puseram-na no meio de todos}4 {e disseram a Jesus: Mestre, esta mulher tem sido apanhada em flagrante adultério.}5 {Moisés nos ordenou na Lei que tais mulheres sejam apedrejadas; tu, pois, que dizes?}6 {Isto diziam, experimentando-o, para ter de que o acusar. Jesus, porém, abaixando-se, começou a escrever no chão com o dedo.}7 {Como eles insistissem na pergunta, levantou-se e disse-lhes: Aquele que dentre vós está sem pecado, seja o primeiro que lhe atire uma pedra.}8 {Tornando a abaixar-se, continuou a escrever no chão.}9 {Mas ouvindo esta resposta, foram saindo um a um, começando pelos mais velhos, ficando só Jesus e a mulher no lugar em que estava.}10 {Então levantando-se Jesus, perguntou-lhe: Mulher, onde estão eles? ninguém te condenou?}11 {Respondeu ela: Ninguém, Senhor. Disse Jesus: Nem eu tampouco te condeno; vai, e não peques mais.}12 Então Jesus tornou a falar-lhes, dizendo: Eu sou a luz do mundo; quem me segue, de modo nenhum andará nas trevas, pelo contrário terá a luz da vida.13 Disseram-lhe os fariseus: Tu dás testemunho de ti mesmo; o teu testemunho não é verdadeiro.14 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Ainda que eu dou testemunho de mim mesmo, o meu testemunho é verdadeiro; porque sei donde vim, e para onde vou; mas vós não sabeis donde venho, nem para onde vou.15 Vós julgais segundo a carne, eu a ninguém julgo.16 E se eu julgo, o meu juízo é verdadeiro; porque não estou só, mas o Pai que me enviou, está comigo.17 Na vossa Lei está escrito que o testemunho de duas pessoas é verdadeiro.18 Eu dou testemunho de mim, e meu Pai que me enviou, também dá testemunho de mim.19 Estes lhe perguntaram: Onde está teu Pai? Respondeu Jesus: Não me conheceis a mim, nem a meu Pai; se me conhecêsseis, também conheceríeis a meu Pai.20 Proferiu ele estas palavras no lugar do gazofilácio, quando ensinava no templo; e ninguém o prendeu, porque não era ainda chegada a sua hora.21 Disse-lhes outra vez: Eu vou retirar-me, e me buscareis, e morrereis em vossos pecados; para onde eu vou, vós não podeis ir.22 Então diziam os judeus: Será caso que se suicide, pois diz: Para onde eu vou, não podeis vós ir?23 Disse-lhes Jesus: Vós sois cá de baixo, eu sou lá de cima; vós sois deste mundo, eu não sou deste mundo.24 Por isso eu vos disse que morrereis em vossos pecados; porque se não crerdes que Eu Sou, morrereis em vossos pecados.25 Perguntaram-lhe, então: Quem és tu? Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Perguntais aquilo que vos tenho dito desde o princípio?26 Muitas coisas tenho a falar e a julgar acerca de vós; mas aquele que me enviou, é verdadeiro, e o que dele ouvi, isso falo ao mundo.27 Eles não perceberam que ele lhes falava do Pai.28 Jesus, pois, continuou: Quando tiverdes levantado o Filho do homem, então conhecereis que Eu Sou e que nada faço de mim mesmo, mas como me ensinou o Pai, assim falo.29 Quem me enviou, está comigo; ele não me deixou só, porque eu faço sempre as coisas que são do seu agrado.30 Falando estas coisas, muitos creram nele.31 Disse, pois, Jesus aos judeus que o haviam crido: Se vós permanecerdes na minha palavra, verdadeiramente sois meus discípulos,32 conhecereis a verdade, e a verdade vos libertará.33 Eles lhe responderam: Nós somos descendência de Abraão e nunca temos sido escravos de ninguém; como dizes tu: Vós sereis livres?34 Replicou-lhes Jesus: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: Todo o que comete pecado, é escravo do pecado.35 O escravo não fica para sempre na casa; o filho fica para sempre.36 Se, pois, o Filho vos libertar, sereis realmente livres.37 Sei que sois descendência de Abraão; mas procurais tirar-me a vida, porque a minha palavra não cabe em vós.38 Eu falo o que tenho visto na presença de meu Pai; e vós fazeis o que ouvistes de vosso pai.39 Responderam-lhe eles: Nós somos filhos de Abraão. Disse-lhes Jesus: Se sois filhos de Abraão, fazei as obras de Abraão;40 mas agora procurais tirar-me a vida, a mim que vos tenho falado a verdade que ouvi de Deus; isto Abraão não fez.41 Vós fazeis as obras de vosso pai. Responderam-lhe eles: Nós não somos bastardos; temos um pai que é Deus.42 Replicou-lhes Jesus: Se Deus fosse vosso Pai, vós me amaríeis; porque eu vim de Deus e estou aqui; pois não vim de mim mesmo, mas ele me enviou.43 Por que não compreendeis a minha linguagem? É porque não podeis ouvir as minhas palavras.44 Vós sois filhos do Diabo, e tendes vontade de cumprir os desejos de vosso pai. Ele era homicida desde o princípio e não permaneceu na verdade, porque não há nele verdade. Quando ele diz uma mentira, fala do que lhe é próprio, porque é mentiroso e o pai da mentira.45 Mas porque eu digo a verdade, vós não me credes.46 Qual de vós me convence de pecado? Se digo a verdade, porque não me credes?47 Quem é de Deus, ouve as palavras de Deus; por isso vós não me ouvis, porque não sois de Deus.48 Responderam-lhe os judeus: Não dizemos nós bem que és samaritano e tens demônio?49 Replicou Jesus: Eu não tenho demônio; mas honro a meu Pai, e vós me desonrais.50 Eu não busco a minha glória; há quem a busque, e julgue.51 Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: Se alguém guardar a minha palavra, nunca jamais verá a morte.52 Disseram-lhe os judeus: Agora estamos certos que estás possesso de demônio. Abraão morreu e também os profetas, e tu dizes: Se alguém guardar a minha palavra, nunca jamais provará a morte.53 Porventura és tu maior do que nosso pai Abraão, que morreu? também os profetas morreram. Quem pretendes tu ser?54 Respondeu Jesus: Se eu me glorificar, a minha glória não é nada. Quem me glorifica é meu Pai, aquele que vós dizeis ser vosso Deus;55 entretanto vós não o tendes conhecido, mas eu o conheço. Se eu disser que não o conheço, serei como vós, mentiroso; mas eu o conheço e guardo a sua palavra.56 Vosso pai Abraão alegrou-se de ver o meu dia, viu-o e regozijou-se.57 Perguntaram-lhe os judeus: Ainda não tens cinqüenta anos, e viste a Abraão?58 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: Antes que Abraão fosse feito, Eu Sou.59 Então pegaram em pedras, para lhe atirar, mas ele encobriu-se e saiu do templo.

1 Jesus, however, went to the Mount of Olives.2 At daybreak he appeared again in the temple, and all the people came to him. So he sat down and began to teach them.3 But the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery. After setting her before them,4 they said to him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of adultery.5 Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women to death. What do you say?"6 They said this to test him, so that they might have a charge against him. But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.7 When they persisted in questioning him, he straightened up and said to them,"Let the person among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."8 Then he bent down again and continued writing on the ground.9 When they heard this, they went away one by one, beginning with the oldest, and he was left alone with the woman standing there.10 Then Jesus stood up and said to her,"Woman, where are your accusers?Hasn't anyone condemned you?"11 She said, "No one, sir."Then Jesus said,"I don't condemn you either. Go home, and from now on do not sin any more."12 Later on Jesus spoke to them again, saying,"I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."13 The Pharisees said to him, "You are testifying about yourself. Your testimony is not valid."14 Jesus answered them,"Even though I am testifying about myself, my testimony is validbecause I know where I have come from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going.15 You are judging by human standards,but I am not judging anyone.16 Yet even if I should judge, my judgment would be valid,for it is not I alone who judges, but I and the one who sent me.17 In your own law it is written that the testimony of two people is valid.18 I am testifying about myself, and the Father who sent me is testifying about me."19 Then they said to him, "Where is this Father of yours?"Jesus replied,"You do not know me or my Father. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also."20 He spoke these words in the treasury, while he was teaching in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.21 Later on he said to them again,"I am going away, and you will look for me, but you will die in your sins. You cannot come where I am going."22 So the Jews said, "He isn't going to kill himself, is he? Is that why he said,‘You cannot come where I am going’?"23 He said to them,"You are from below, I am from above. You are of this world, but I am not of this world.24 That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins."25 Then they said to him, "Who are you?"Jesus told them,"What have I been telling you all along?26 I have much to say about you and to condemn you for.But the one who sent me is truthful,and what I have heard from him I declare to the world."27 They didn't realize that he was talking to them about the Father.28 So Jesus told them,"When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority. Instead, I speak only what the Father has taught me.29 Moreover, the one who sent me is with me. He has never left me alone because I always do what pleases him."30 While he was saying these things, many believed in him.31 So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in him,"If you continue in my word, you are really my disciples.32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."33 They replied to him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves to anybody. So how can you say,‘You will be set free’?"34 Jesus answered them,"Truly, truly I tell you that everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.35 The slave does not remain in the household forever, but the son does remain forever.36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!"37 "I know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are trying to kill me because my word finds no reception among you.38 I declare what I have seen in myFather's presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father."39 They replied to him, "Our father is Abraham!"Jesus said to them,"If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing what Abraham did.40 But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham would not have done that.41 You are doing your father's works."They said to him, "We are not illegitimate children. We have one Father, God himself."42 Jesus told them,"If God were your Father, you would have loved me, because I came from God and am here. For I have not come on my own accord, but he sent me.43 Why don't you understand my language? It's because you can't listen to my words.44 You belong to your father the devil, and you want to carry out the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and has never stood by the truth,since there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie he speaks in character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.45 But it is because I speak the truth that you do not believe me.46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me?47 The one who belongs to God listens to the words of God. The reason you do not listen is because you do not belong to God."48 The Jews replied to him, "Surely we are right in saying that you are a Samaritan and have a demon, aren't we?"49 Jesus answered,"I don't have a demon. On the contrary, I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.50 I don't seek my own glory. There is one who seeks it, and he is the Judge.51 Truly, truly I tell you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death at all."52 Then the Jews said to him, "Now we really know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and so did the prophets, but you say,‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death at all.’53 You aren't greater than our father Abraham, who died, are you? The prophets also died. Who are you making yourself out to be?"54 Jesus answered,"If I were trying to glorify myself, my glory would mean nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’55 You don't know him, but I know him. If I were to say that I don't know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him and keep his word.56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day, and he saw it and was glad."57 Then the Jews said to him, "You are not even fifty years old, yet you have seen Abraham?"58 Jesus said to them,"Truly, truly I tell you, before there was an Abraham, I am!"59 At this, they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
