Jeová promete a Abrão um filho

1 Depois destas coisas, veio *Gn 15.4;1Sm 15.10a palavra de Jeová a Abrão, numa visão, dizendo: *Gn 21.17;26.24Não temas, Abrão; eu sou *Dt 33.29teu escudo, a tua *Nm 18.20recompensa será infinitamente grande. 2 Respondeu Abrão: Senhor Jeová, que me darás, visto que morro sem filhos, e o herdeiro da minha casa é Eliézer de Damasco? 3 Acrescentou Abrão: Eis que a mim não me tens dado filhos, e um *Gn 14.14escravo vai ser o meu herdeiro. 4 Veio-lhe a palavra de Jeová: Este não será o teu herdeiro; *Gl 4.28porém aquele que será gerado de ti será o teu herdeiro. 5 Fez-lhe sair para fora e disse: Olha para o céu e *Gn 22.17;26.4;Dt 1.10conta as estrelas, se as poderes contar; e disse-lhe: *Êx 32.13;Rm 4.18Assim será a tua semente. 6 *Rm 4.3;Gl 3.6;Tg 2.23Creu Abrão em Jeová, que lhe imputou isto como justiça. 7 Disse-lhe mais: Eu sou Jeová, que te fiz sair de *Gn 11.31Ur dos caldeus, a fim de te *Gn 13.15,17dar esta terra em herança. 8 Perguntou-lhe Abrão: Ó Senhor Jeová, *Lc 1.18como saberei que a hei de herdar? 9 Respondeu-lhe: Toma-me uma novilha de três anos, e uma cabra de três anos, e um carneiro de três anos, e uma rola, e um pombinho. 10 Ele, tomando todos esses animais, os *Gn 15.17partiu pelo meio e pôs cada metade em frente da outra; mas *Lv 1.17as aves não partiu. 11 As aves de rapina desciam sobre os cadáveres, porém Abrão as enxotava.

Jeová entra numa aliança com Abrão

12 Quando o sol ia a entrar, caiu um *Gn 2.21;28.11;Jó 33.15profundo sono sobre Abrão; eis que lhe sobreveio um horror de grandes trevas. 13 E lhe foi dito: Sabe, com certeza, que *At 7.6,17a tua semente será peregrina em terra alheia, e *Dt 5.15será reduzida à escravidão, e será aflita por *Gl 3.17;Êx 12.40quatrocentos anos. 14 Sabe, também, que eu hei de julgar a nação a que têm de servir; e, depois, sairão *Êx 12.32-38com grandes riquezas. 15 Tu, porém, *Gn 25.8;47.30irás em paz para teus pais; serás sepultado numa boa velhice. 16 *Gn 15.13Na quarta geração, voltarão para cá, porque *Lv 18.24-28a medida da iniquidade dos amorreus ainda não está cheia. 17 Quando o sol já estava posto, e era escuro, um fogo fumegante e uma tocha de fogo *Jr 34.18-19passaram por entre aquelas metades. 18 Naquele dia, fez Jeová uma aliança com Abrão, dizendo: À tua semente tenho dado esta terra, desde *Êx 23.31;Nm 34.1-15;Dt 1.7-8o rio do Egito até o grande rio, o rio Eufrates: 19 o *Êx 3.17;23.28;Js 21.43;24.11queneu, o quenezeu, o cadmoneu, 20 o heteu, o ferezeu, os refains, 21 o amorreu, o cananeu, o girgaseu e o jebuseu.

1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

2 And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? 3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. 4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

7 And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it. 8 And he said, Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it? 9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon. 10 And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not. 11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.

12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him. 13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. 15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. 16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.*15.17 a burning…: Heb. a lamp of fire 18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: 19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, 21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
