Sarai e Agar

1 Ora, *Gn 11.30Sarai, mulher de Abrão, não lhe dava filhos; mas tinha uma serva *Gn 12.16egípcia, que se chamava Agar. 2 Disse Sarai a Abrão: Eis que Jeová me tem impedido de ter filhos; *Gn 30.3-4,9-10toma, pois, a minha serva; porventura, terei filhos por meio dela. Escutou Abrão a voz de Sarai. 3 Então, Sarai, mulher de Abrão, tomou a Agar, egípcia, sua serva, depois de Abrão ter habitado *Gn 12.4dez anos na terra de Canaã, e a deu por mulher a seu marido. 4 Ele conheceu a Agar, e ela concebeu; vendo ela que tinha concebido, foi sua senhora desprezada aos seus olhos. 5 Disse Sarai a Abrão: *Jr 51.35Seja sobre ti a afronta que me é feita a mim. Eu pus a minha serva no teu seio e, vendo ela que tinha concebido, eu fui desprezada aos seus olhos. *Gn 31.53Jeová seja juiz entre mim e ti. 6 Respondeu, porém, Abrão a Sarai: Eis que *Gn 16.9tua serva está em tuas mãos: faze-lhe como bem te parecer. E Sarai maltratou-a, e ela fugiu da sua face.

7 O *Gn 21.17-18;22.11,15;31.11Anjo de Jeová achou-a junto a uma fonte de água no deserto, junto à fonte que está no caminho de *Gn 20.1Sur. 8 Perguntou-lhe: Agar, serva de Sarai, *Gn 3.9;1Rs 19.9,13donde vieste? E para onde vais? Respondeu ela: Da presença de Sarai, minha senhora, vou fugindo. 9 Disse-lhe o Anjo de Jeová: Volta para a tua senhora e humilha-te debaixo das suas mãos. 10 Disse-lhe mais o Anjo de Jeová: *Gn 17.20Multiplicarei sobremaneira a tua descendência, de modo que não será contada por ser tão numerosa. 11 Disse-lhe ainda mais o Anjo de Jeová: Eis que concebeste e darás à luz um filho, a quem chamarás Ismael, porque *Êx 3.7,9Jeová ouviu a tua aflição. 12 Ele será como *Jó 24.5;39.5-8um jumento selvagem entre os homens; a sua mão será contra todos, e a mão de todos, contra ele: *Gn 25.18ao oriente de todos os seus irmãos habitará. 13 Então, chamou a Jeová, que lhe falava: *Gn 32.30Tu és Deus que vê; pois ela disse: Não olhei eu neste lugar para aquele que me vê? 14 Pelo que se chamou o poço Beer-Laai-Roi; ele está entre *Gn 14.7Cades e Berede.

Nascimento de Ismael

15 Agar deu à luz Ismael a Abrão; e Abrão chamou Ismael o nome do filho que Agar lhe deu. 16 Tinha Abrão *Gn 12.4;16.3oitenta e seis anos, quando Agar lhe deu à luz Ismael.

1 Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. 2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.*16.2 obtain…: Heb. be built by her 3 And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. 5 And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee. 6 But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.*16.6 as…: Heb. that which is good in thine eyes*16.6 dealt…: Heb. afflicted her

7 And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. 8 And he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai. 9 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

10 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. 11 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.*16.11 Ishmael: that is, God shall hear 12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. 13 And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? 14 Wherefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.*16.14 Beer-lahai-roi: that is, The well of him that liveth and seeth me

15 And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. 16 And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.
