1 Eu, porém, determinei isto por mim mesmo, não ir ter convosco outra vez em tristeza.2 Pois se eu vos entristeço, quem é, então, o que me alegra, senão aquele que por mim é entristecido?3 Isto mesmo escrevi, para que, chegando, eu não tenha tristeza da parte dos que me deviam alegrar, tendo esta confiança em todos vós que o meu gozo é o de todos vós.4 Pois em muita tribulação e angústia de coração vos escrevi com muitas lágrimas, não para que fôsseis entristecidos, mas para que conhecêsseis o amor que mais abundantemente tenho para convosco.5 Mas se alguém tem causado tristeza, tem causado tristeza não a mim, porém em parte (para não ser severo demais) a todos vós.6 Basta a esse tal esta repreensão dada pelo maior número,7 de modo que pelo contrário deveis antes perdoar-lhe e confortá-lo, para que o tal não seja consumido pela demasiada tristeza.8 Por isso vos rogo que confirmeis a vossa caridade para com ele;9 pois para esse fim também escrevi, para, por esta vossa prova, conhecer se em tudo sois obedientes.10 A quem vós perdoais alguma coisa, também eu; pois o que eu tenho perdoado, se alguma coisa tenho perdoado, é por amor de vós na presença de Cristo,11 para que Satanás não ganhe alguma vantagem sobre nós; porque não ignoramos as suas maquinações.12 Quando cheguei a Trôade para pregar o Evangelho de Cristo, e quando me foi aberta uma porta no Senhor,13 não tive alívio para o meu espírito porque não achei a meu irmão Tito; mas despedindo-me deles, parti para a Macedônia.14 Graças, porém, a Deus que em Cristo sempre nos conduz em triunfo, e que por nosso meio faz sentir o cheiro do seu conhecimento em todo o lugar.15 Pois para Deus somos o bom cheiro de Cristo nos que são salvos e nos que perecem:16 para uns, na verdade, cheiro de morte para morte, para outros, porém, cheiro de vida para vida. E para estas coisas quem é idôneo?17 Pois não estamos, como muitos, mercadejando com a palavra de Deus, mas é com sinceridade, mas é de Deus, perante Deus que em Cristo falamos.

1 I decided this for myself that I would not come again to you with sorrow.2 For if I make you sad, who then makes me glad? It is the same one whom I made sad.3 I wrote this very thing that when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice. I have confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears. Not that you should be made sorry, but that you might know the love that I have more abundantly for you.5 But if any has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow, not to me, but in part that I press not too heavily to you all.6 Sufficient to such a one is this punishment that was inflicted by the many.7 To the contrary you should rather forgive him and comfort him, lest by any means such a one should be swallowed up with his excess sorrow.8 I urge you to confirm your love toward him.9 I write for this purpose, that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things.10 Whoever you forgive, I also forgive. What I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, for your sakes I have forgiven it in the presence of Christ,11 that no advantage may be gained over us by Satan: for we are not ignorant of his devices.12 Now when I came to Troas for the good news of Christ, and when a door was opened to me in the Lord,13 I had no relief for my spirit, because I did not find Titus my brother: but leaving them, I went to Macedonia.14 Thanks to God, who always leads us in triumph triumphal procession in Christ. He makes known through us the sweet aroma of his knowledge in every place.15 For we are a sweet aroma of Christ to God. We are an aroma for those who are saved and those who perish.16 To the one an aroma of death leading to death and to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is sufficient for these things?17 For we are not as the many, corrupting the word of God; but sincere and from God. We speak in Christ in the sight of God.
