1 Toda a assembléia levantou-se e conduziu Jesus a Pilatos.2 Começaram a acusá-lo, dizendo: Achamos este homem pervertendo a nossa nação, vedando pagar tributo a César e dizendo ser ele Cristo, rei.3 Pilatos perguntou-lhe: És tu o rei dos Judeus? Respondeu-lhe Jesus: Tu o dizes.4 Disse Pilatos aos principais sacerdotes e à multidão: Não acho culpa alguma neste homem.5 Mas eles instavam ainda mais, dizendo: Ele agita o povo, ensinando por toda a Judéia, desde a Galiléia, onde começou, até aqui.6 Pilatos, ouvindo isto, perguntou se o homem era galileu.7 Quando soube que era da jurisdição de Herodes, o enviou ao mesmo Herodes, que naqueles dias se achava em Jerusalém.8 Herodes, vendo a Jesus, ficou muito contente; pois de longo tempo queria vê-lo, porque tinha ouvido falar a respeito dele; e esperava vê-lo fazer um milagre.9 Fez-lhe muitas perguntas; mas Jesus nada lhe respondeu.10 Os principais sacerdotes e os escribas estavam ali, acusando-o com veemência.11 Herodes, com a sua guarda, desprezou-o e escarneceu dele e, vestindo-o com um manto resplandecente, tornou a enviá-lo a Pilatos.12 Naquele dia Herodes e Pilatos vieram a ser amigos; pois antes eram inimigos um do outro.13 Reunindo Pilatos os principais sacerdotes, as autoridades e o povo,14 disse-lhes: Apresentastes-me este homem como agitador do povo e, eis que interrogando-o eu diante de vós, não achei nele nenhuma culpa das que o acusais.15 Nem tão pouco Herodes, pois no-lo tornou a enviar; nada tem feito ele digno de morte.16 Portanto, depois de o castigar, soltá-lo-ei.17 {E era-lhe necessário soltar-lhes um pela festa.}18 Todos à uma começaram a gritar: Seja morto esse, e solta-nos Barrabás-19 o qual tinha sido preso por causa de uma sedição na cidade, e por um homicídio.20 Pilatos, querendo soltar a Jesus, falou-lhes de novo.21 Mas eles gritavam: Crucifica-o! crucifica-o!22 Falou-lhes ainda pela terceira vez: Pois que mal fez ele? Não achei nele causa alguma de morte; portanto depois de o castigar, soltá-lo-ei.23 Mas eles insistiam em altas vozes, pedindo que fosse crucificado. E o seu clamor prevaleceu.24 Decidiu Pilatos que se fizesse o que eles pediam:25 soltou aquele que havia sido preso por causa da sedição e do homicídio, a quem eles pediam, mas entregou a Jesus à vontade deles.26 Quando o conduziram, pegaram num certo Simão, cireneu, que vinha do campo, e puseram a cruz sobre ele, para que a levasse após Jesus.27 Seguia-o uma grande multidão de povo e de mulheres, as quais o pranteavam e lamentavam.28 Porém Jesus, voltando-se para elas, disse: Filhas de Jerusalém, não choreis por mim; mas chorai por vós mesmas e por vossos filhos,29 porque dias virão, em que se dirá: Bem-aventuradas as estéreis, e os ventres que nunca geraram, e os peitos que nunca amamentaram.30 Então começarão a dizer aos montes: Cai sobre nós, e aos outeiros: Cobri-nos,31 porque se isto se faz no lenho verde, que se fará no seco?32 Eram também levados dois outros que eram malfeitores, para serem mortos com ele.33 Quando chegaram ao lugar chamado Calvário, ali o crucificaram a ele, e também aos malfeitores, um à direita, e outro à esquerda.34 Disse Jesus: Pai, perdoa-lhes; pois não sabem o que fazem. Então repartindo as vestes dele, deitaram sortes sobre elas.35 O povo estava ali presenciando tudo. As autoridades zombavam dele, dizendo: Aos outros salvou; salve-se a si mesmo, se é o Cristo de Deus, seu escolhido.36 Os soldados também o escarneciam, chegando-se a ele, oferecendo-lhe vinagre37 e dizendo: Se tu és o rei dos Judeus, salva-te a ti mesmo.38 Estava também sobre ele esta inscrição: ESTE É O REI DOS JUDEUS.39 Um dos malfeitores que estavam pendurados, blasfemava contra ele, dizendo: Não és tu o Cristo? salva-te a ti mesmo e a nós também.40 Mas o outro, repreendendo-o, disse: Nem ao menos temes a Deus, estando debaixo da mesma condenação?41 Nós certamente com justiça, porque recebemos o castigo que merecem os nossos atos; mas este nenhum mal fez.42 E disse: Jesus, lembra-te de mim quando entrares no teu reino.43 Ele lhe respondeu: Em verdade te digo que hoje estarás comigo no Paraíso.44 Era já quase a hora sexta e, escurecendo-se o sol, houve trevas sobre toda a terra até a hora nona;45 e rasgou-se pelo meio o véu do santuário.46 Jesus, clamando em alta voz, disse: Pai, nas tuas mãos entrego o meu espírito. Tendo dito isto, expirou.47 Vendo o centurião o que acontecera, deu glória a Deus, dizendo: Realmente este homem era justo.48 Toda a multidão que se reunira para presenciar este espetáculo, vendo o que acontecera, retirava-se, batendo nos peitos.49 Mas todos os conhecidos de Jesus e as mulheres que o tinham seguido desde a Galiléia, conservavam-se de longe, contemplando estas coisas.50 Um homem chamado José, membro do sinédrio, homem bom e justo51 (que não anuíra ao propósito e ato dos outros), de Arimatéia, cidade dos judeus, o qual esperava o reino de Deus,52 foi ter com Pilatos, e pediu o corpo de Jesus;53 e tirando-o da cruz, envolveu-o em um pano de linho e o depositou num túmulo aberto em rocha, onde ninguém havia sido sepultado.54 Era o dia da Parasceve, e ia começar o sábado.55 As mulheres, que tinham vindo da Galiléia com ele, seguindo a José, viram o túmulo e como o corpo de Jesus fora nele posto;56 voltando depois, prepararam aromas e bálsamos. No sábado descansaram segundo o mandamento;
1 The whole company of them rose up and brought him before Pilate.2 They accused him, saying: »We found this man perverting our nation. He forbids payment of tax to Caesar. He claims to be Christ a king.«3 Pilate asked him: »Are you King of the Jews?« He answered him: »You say it.«4 Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds: »I find no fault in this man.«5 They were more insistent saying: »He excites the people throughout all Judea, beginning in Galilee even to this place.«6 When Pilate heard it, he asked if the man was a Galilean.7 When he knew that he was from Herods jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod. He was in Jerusalem at that time.8 Herod was very happy to see Jesus. He had wanted to see him for a long time. He hoped to see him perform a miracle.9 He offered many questions but received no answers.10 The chief priests and the scribes vehemently accused him.11 And Herod with his soldiers despised him with contempt, and mocked him. They arrayed him in magnificent apparel. Then they sent him back to Pilate.12 Herod and Pilate became friends that day. Before that time they were at enmity.13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people.14 He said: »You brought this man to me as one who perverted the people. I examined him before you and find no fault in this man. He has not done the things you accuse him of.15 »Herod found no fault and sent him back to us. He has done nothing worthy of death.16 »I will therefore punish him, and release him.«17 He must release one prisoner to them at the feast.18 They cried out in unison: »Take this man away and release to us Barabbas!«19 He was thrown into prison for insurrection sedition in the city and murder.20 Pilate spoke to them again desiring to release Jesus.21 But they shouted, »Impale him! Impale him!«22 A third time he said to them: »Why, what evil has this man done? I have found no reason to put him to death. I will therefore chastise him and release him.«23 But they were insistent and spoke in loud voices asking him to impale him. And they prevailed.24 Pilate pronounced a sentence that what they asked for should be done.25 He released the man who was in prison for insurrection and murder and he delivered Jesus to their will.26 They led him away. Simon of Cyrene was traveling from the country. They seized him and forced him to carry the stake for Jesus.27 A great crowd of people followed. Many women cried and grieved over him.28 Jesus turned to them and said: »Daughters of Jerusalem do not weep for me but weep for yourselves and for your children.29 »The days are coming when they will say blessed are the barren those without children and the breasts that never nursed.30 »Then they will say to the mountains fall on us and to the hills cover us.31 »If they do these things in the green tree, what shall be done in the dry?«32 Two criminals were to be put to death with him.33 They came to the place called the skull. They impaled him and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left.34 Jesus said: »Father, forgive them for they do not know what they do.« This verse not found in older manuscripts. They cast lots and divided his garments among themselves.35 The people stood watching while the rulers scoffed at him, saying: »He saved others let him save himself if this is his chosen, the Christ of God.«36 The soldiers mocked him and offered him vinegar,37 saying: »If you are the King of the Jews save yourself.«38 There was a superscription over him, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.39 One of the criminals who were hanged complained bitterly to him saying: »Are you the Christ? Save yourself and us.«40 The other rebuked him saying: »Do you not respect God, seeing you are also condemned?41 »We are indeed justly condemned for we receive the due reward of our deeds. But this man has done nothing wrong.«42 He said: »Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingdom.«43 He replied: »Today I tell you this. You will be with me in paradise.«44 It was about the sixth hour. Darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.45 The sun failed to shine. The veil of the temple was torn in two.46 Jesus cried with a loud voice: »Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.« After saying this he quit breathing.47 The centurion saw what was done and glorified God, saying: »Certainly this was a righteous man.«48 The crowds gathered at this sight. When they saw the things that were done they left beating their breasts.49 All of his friends and the women who followed him from Galilee stood watching from a distance.50 Joseph was a member of the council and a good and righteous man.51 He was from Arimathaea a city of the Jews and was looking for the kingdom of God.52 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.53 He took it down and wrapped it in a linen cloth. Then he laid him in a tomb that was carved in stone. No man had ever lain in this tomb.54 It was the day of the Preparation and the Sabbath was near.55 The women from Galilee went with him to see the tomb and the place for the body.56 They returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
