1 Tendo Jesus entrado um sábado na casa de um dos chefes dos fariseus para comer, eles o estavam observando.2 Achava-se diante dele um homem hidrópico.3 Jesus, dirigindo-se aos doutores da lei e aos fariseus, perguntou: É lícito ou não curar no sábado?4 Mas eles ficaram calados. Então pegando no homem, curou-o e despediu-o.5 Depois lhes perguntou: Qual de vós, se um filho ou um boi cair num poço, não o tirará logo, mesmo em dia de sábado?6 A isto não puderam responder.7 Ao notar como os convidados escolhiam os primeiros lugares, propôs-lhes esta parábola.8 Quando fores por alguém convidado para um casamento, não te sentes no primeiro lugar; para não suceder que seja por ele convidada uma pessoa mais considerada do que tu e,9 vindo o que te convidou a ti e a ele, te diga: Dá o lugar a este. Então irás envergonhado ocupar o último lugar.10 Pelo contrário quando fores convidado, vai tomar o último lugar; para que, quando vier o que te convidou, te diga: Amigo, senta-te mais para cima. Então isto será para ti uma honra diante de todos os mais convivas.11 Pois todo o que se exalta, será humilhado; mas todo o que se humilha, será exaltado.12 Disse também ao que o havia convidado: Quando deres algum almoço ou ceia, não convides nem teus amigos, nem teus irmãos, nem teus parentes, nem os vizinhos ricos; para não suceder que eles por sua vez te convidem, e sejas recompensado.13 Pelo contrário, quando deres um festim, convida os pobres, os aleijados, os coxos e os cegos;14 e serás bem-aventurado, por não terem eles com que te recompensar; pois serás recompensado na ressurreição dos justos.15 Ao ouvir estas palavras, disse-lhe um dos convivas: Bem-aventurado aquele que comer pão no reino de Deus.16 Mas Jesus disse-lhe: Um homem deu uma grande ceia, e convidou a muitos;17 e a hora da ceia enviou ao seu servo para dizer aos convidados: Vinde, porque tudo já está preparado.18 Começaram todos à uma a excusar-se. Comprei um campo, disse um, e preciso ir vê-lo; rogo-te que me dês por escusado.19 Comprei cinco juntas de bois, disse outro, e vou experimentá-las; rogo-te que me dês por escusado.20 Casei-me, disse outro ainda, e por isso não posso ir.21 O servo voltou e contou isto ao seu senhor. Então irado, o dono da casa disse ao seu servo: Sai depressa para as ruas e becos da cidade e traze para aqui os pobres, os aleijados, os cegos e os coxos.22 Disse o servo: Senhor, feito está o que ordenaste, e ainda há lugar.23 Respondeu-lhe o senhor: Sai pelos caminhos e atalhos e obriga a todos a entrar, para que se encha minha casa;24 porque vos declaro que nenhum daqueles homens que foram convidados, provará a minha ceia.25 Uma grande multidão o acompanhava e, virando-se Jesus para ela, lhe disse:26 Se alguém vem a mim e não aborrece a seu pai, e mãe, e mulher, e filhos, e irmãos, e irmãs, e ainda a sua própria vida, não pode ser meu discípulo.27 Quem não carrega a sua cruz e não me segue, não pode ser meu discípulo.28 Pois qual de vós, querendo edificar uma torre, não se assenta primeiro a calcular a despesa, para ver se tem com que a acabar?29 Para não suceder que, tendo lançado os alicerces e não a podendo acabar, todos os que a virem, comecem a zombar dele,30 dizendo: Este homem começou a edificar, e não pôde acabar.31 Ou qual é o rei que, indo entrar em guerra contra outro rei, não se assenta primeiro e consulta se com dez mil homens poderá enfrentar o que vem contra ele com vinte mil?32 Se não, enquanto o outro ainda está longe, envia-lhe uma embaixada, pedindo-lhe condições de paz.33 Assim, pois, todo aquele que dentre vós não renuncia a tudo o que possui, não pode ser meu discípulo.34 O sal, na verdade, é bom; mas se o sal se tiver tornado insípido, como se poderá restaurar-lhe o sabor?35 Não é mais útil nem para a terra nem para o estrume: é lançado fora. Quem tem ouvidos para ouvir, ouça.

1 Shortly after that he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees. They were there to eat on the Sabbath. They watched him.2 There was in his presence a man who had the dropsy swollen arms and legs.3 Jesus spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees: »Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath, or not?«4 They did not speak. So he held the man and healed him and let him go.5 He said: »Which of you who has an ass or a bull that falls into a well, and will not immediately pull him up on a Sabbath day?«6 Again they could not answer.7 He spoke an illustration to the invited guests. He noticed they chose from the most important seats. So he said to them:8 »When you are invited to a marriage feast do not take the place of honor. Someone more distinguished than you may be invited.9 »Your host would tell you, give this person your place. Then you would be embarrassed and have to take the place of least honor.10 »When you are invited, take the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, friend, move to a more honorable place. And the other guests will see how you are honored.11 »Those who exalt themselves will be humbled. And people who humble themselves will be exalted.«12 Jesus said to his host: »When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your rich neighbors. They will invite you back, and in this way you will be paid for what you did.13 »When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.14 »You will be blessed because they are not able to pay you back. God will repay you on the day the good people rise from death.«15 One of the guests at the table then said to Jesus: »Those who sit down at the feast in the Kingdom of God will be happy!«16 Jesus said: »There was a man who gave a great feast to which he invited many people.17 »He sent his servant to tell the guests that everything is ready.18 »They all made excuses one after another. The first one told the servant: ‘I bought a field and must go and look at it. Please accept my apologies.’19 »Another said: ‘I purchased five pairs of oxen and am on my way to try them out. Please accept my apologies.’20 »Another explained: ‘I am newly married and I cannot come.’21 »The servant returned and conveyed this to his master. The master was furious. He commanded his servant to hurry into the streets and alleys of the town, and bring back the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.22 »The servant soon told his master, ‘Your order has been carried out but there is still more room.’23 »The master told the servant, ‘Go to the country roads and lanes and make people come so my house will be full.’24 »None of those who were invited will taste my dinner!« He said.25 Jesus turned to speak to the large crowd of people who were traveling with him:26 »You who come to me may not be my disciple unless you love me more than you love your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters and yourself.27 »Those who do not carry their own stake and come after me may not be my disciples.28 »If you plan to build a tower, you sit down first and figure out what it will cost. Then you see if you have enough money to finish the job.29 »If you do not, you will not be able to finish the project after laying the foundation. Everyone who sees what happened will ridicule and poke fun of you.30 »‘You started and could not finish,’ they will say.31 « When a king commands ten thousand men to fight another king who comes against him with twenty thousand men, he will sit down first and decide if he is strong enough to defeat the other king.32 »If he is not strong enough he will send messengers to the other king to ask for terms of peace while he is still far away.«33 »Likewise,« concluded Jesus, »none of you may be my disciples unless you give up everything you have.«34 »Salt is good. But if it loses its saltiness it cannot be made salty again.35 »It is neither good for the soil nor for the manure pile. You throw it away. Listen if you have ears!«
