Jesus ungido em Betânia por Maria

1 Seis dias antes da *Jo 11.55; cp.Jo 12.12,20Páscoa, *Jo 12.1-8; cp.Mt 26.6-13;Mc 14.3-9;Lc 7.37-39foi Jesus a *Mt 21.17; cp.Jo 11.43s.Betânia, onde estava Lázaro, a quem ele ressuscitou dentre os mortos. 2 Deram-lhe aí uma ceia, e nela *Lc 10.38Marta servia, e Lázaro era um dos que estavam à mesa com ele. 3 *Jo 11.2Então, Maria, tomando uma libra de perfume de *Mc 14.3nardo puro, mui precioso, ungiu os pés de Jesus e enxugou-os com os seus cabelos; e a casa encheu-se do cheiro do perfume. 4 *cp.Jo 6.71Judas Iscariotes, um de seus discípulos, aquele que o havia de trair, perguntou: 5 Por que não se vendeu este perfume por trezentos denários*Um denário valia 315 réis, moeda brasileira. e não se deu aos pobres? 6 Isso disse ele, não porque cuidasse dos pobres, mas porque era ladrão e, *Jo 13.29tendo a bolsa, subtraía *cp.Lc 8.3o que nela se deitava. 7 Respondeu Jesus: Deixai-a, a fim de que guarde isso para *Jo 19.40o dia da minha sepultura; 8 *Mt 26.11;Mc 14.7;Dt 15.11porque os pobres, sempre os tendes convosco, mas a mim nem sempre me tendes.

O plano para tirar a vida a Lázaro

9 Soube uma *cp.Mc 12.37;Jo 12.12grande multidão dos judeus que Jesus estava ali, e foram lá não somente por causa dele, mas também para verem a Lázaro, *Jo 11.43s.;Jo 12.1,17s.a quem ele ressuscitara dentre os mortos. 10 Mas os principais sacerdotes resolveram também tirar a vida a Lázaro, 11 pois *Jo 7.31; cp.11.42muitos judeus, *Jo 12.18; cp.Jo 11.45s.por causa dele, se retiravam e criam em Jesus.

A entrada triunfal de Jesus em Jerusalém

12 No dia seguinte, *Jo 12.12-15;Mt 21.4-9;Mc 11.7-10;Lc 19.35-38uma grande multidão que tinha vindo *Jo 12.1à festa, sabendo que Jesus vinha a Jerusalém, 13 tomaram ramos de palmeiras e saíram ao seu encontro, clamando: *cp.Sl 118.25s.Hosana! Bendito o que vem em nome do Senhor! Bendito *Jo 1.49o Rei de Israel! 14 Jesus, tendo achado um jumentinho, montou nele, *Zc 9.9segundo está escrito: 15 Não temas, filha de Sião, eis que vem o teu Rei, montado em um filho de jumenta. 16 *cp.Jo 2.22;Jo 14.26;Mc 9.32Seus discípulos, a princípio, não compreenderam tudo isso; mas, quando Jesus *Jo 7.39;Jo 12.23foi glorificado, então, se lembraram de que isso estava escrito a respeito dele e de que assim lhe fizeram. 17 *Jo 11.42A multidão que estava com ele, quando chamara a Lázaro do túmulo e o levantara dentre os mortos, dava testemunho. 18 *cp.Lc 19.37;Jo 12.12Por isso, também a multidão lhe saiu ao encontro, *Jo 12.11porque souberam que ele tinha feito esse milagre. 19 De sorte que os fariseus disseram entre si: Vedes que nada conseguis; eis aí após ele foi todo o mundo.

Alguns gregos desejam ver a Jesus

20 Entre os que tinham ido para adorar na *Jo 12.1festa, havia alguns *Jo 7.35gregos; 21 estes, pois, foram ter com *Jo 1.44Filipe, que era de *Jo 1.44; cp.Mt 11.21Betsaida da Galileia, e lhe fizeram este pedido: Senhor, queremos ver a Jesus. 22 Filipe foi dizê-lo a André, e André e Filipe foram-no dizer a Jesus. 23 Disse-lhes Jesus: *cp.Jo 13.1,32;17.1;Mt 26.45;Mc 14.35,41É chegada a hora de *Jo 7.39;Jo 12.16ser glorificado o Filho do Homem. 24 Em verdade, em verdade vos digo: *1Co 15.36; cp.Rm 14.9se o grão de trigo, caindo na terra, não morrer, fica só; mas, se morrer, dá muito fruto. 25 *Mt 10.39Quem ama a sua vida perdê-la-á; mas quem *Lc 14.26aborrece a sua vida neste mundo conservá-la-á para a vida eterna. 26 Se alguém me servir, siga-me, *Jo 14.3;17.24; cp.2Co 5.8;Fp 1.23;1Ts 4.17e, onde eu estou, estará aquele que me serve; se alguém me servir, o Pai *1Sm 2.30;Sl 91.15; cp.Lc 12.37o honrará. 27 *Mt 26.38;Mc 14.34;Jo 11.33Agora, está perturbada a minha alma, e que direi? *Mt 11.25Pai, livra-me *Jo 12.23desta hora. Mas para isso foi que vim a esta hora. 28 Pai, glorifica o teu nome. Veio, então, do céu *cp.Mt 3.17;17.5;Mc 1.11;9.7;Lc 3.22;9.35esta voz: Eu já o glorifiquei e outra vez o glorificarei. 29 A multidão, pois, que ali estava e a ouvira, dizia ter havido um trovão; outros diziam que *At 23.9um anjo lhe falara. 30 Disse Jesus: *Jo 11.42Não foi por minha causa, mas sim por vossa causa que veio esta voz. 31 *Jo 16.11; cp.Jo 3.19;9.39Agora, é o juízo deste mundo; agora, será expulso *Jo 14.30;16.11;2Co 4.4;Ef 2.2; cp.6.12;1Jo 4.4;5.19o príncipe deste mundo; 32 e eu, quando *Jo 3.14;8.28;Jo 12.34for levantado da terra, *cp.Jo 6.44atrairei todos a mim. 33 Isso dizia, *cp.Jo 18.32;21.19dando a entender o modo por que havia de morrer. 34 Replicou o povo: Nós ouvimos *Jo 10.34da Lei que *Sl 110.4;Is 9.7;Ez 37.25;Dn 7.14o Cristo permanece para sempre, e como dizes tu ser necessário que *Mt 8.20o Filho do Homem seja levantado? Quem é esse Filho do Homem? 35 Respondeu-lhes Jesus: *Jo 7.33; cp.9.4;1Jo 2.10Ainda por um pouco, *Jo 12.46a luz está entre vós. *Ef 5.8; cp.Gl 6.10Andai enquanto tendes a luz, para que as trevas não vos apanhem; e quem *1Jo 1.6;2.11anda nas trevas não sabe para onde vai. 36 Enquanto tendes a luz, *Jo 12.46crede na luz, para que vos torneis *Lc 16.8; cp.Jo 8.12filhos da luz.

A explicação da incredulidade dos judeus

Assim falou Jesus e, tendo-se retirado, *cp.Jo 8.59escondeu-se deles. 37 Embora tivesse feito tantos *Jo 2.11milagres na presença deles, não criam nele, 38 para que se cumprisse a palavra proferida pelo profeta Isaías:

*Rm 10.16;Is 53.1Senhor, quem creu a nossa pregação?

E a quem foi revelado o braço do Senhor?

39 Não podiam crer, porque, como diz ainda Isaías:

40 *Mt 13.14s.;Is 6.10Cegou-lhes os olhos e *cp.Mc 6.52endureceu-lhes o coração,

para que não vejam com os seus olhos, e entendam no coração,

e se convertam,

e eu os sare.

41 Isso disse Isaías, porque *Is 6.1ss.viu a glória dele e *cp.Lc 24.27dele falou. 42 Contudo, muitos das próprias *Lc 23.13autoridades *cp.Jo 7.48;Jo 12.11creram nele, mas, *Jo 7.13por causa dos fariseus, não o confessavam, para não serem *Jo 9.22expulsos da sinagoga; 43 porque *Jo 5.41,44prezaram mais a glória que vem dos homens do que a glória que vem de Deus.

O resumo do ensino de Jesus

44 Clamou Jesus, dizendo: *cp.Mt 10.40;Jo 5.24Quem crê em mim não crê em mim, mas naquele que me enviou; 45 *Jo 14.9e quem me vê vê aquele que me enviou. 46 *Jo 1.4;3.19;8.12;9.5;Jo 12.35s.Eu, que sou a luz, vim ao mundo, a fim de que todo o que crê em mim não permaneça nas trevas. 47 Se alguém ouvir as minhas palavras e não as guardar, eu não o julgo; porque *Jo 3.17; cp.8.15s.não vim a julgar o mundo, mas a salvar o mundo. 48 *cp.Lc 10.16Quem me despreza e não recebe as minhas palavras tem quem o julgue; *cp.Dt 18.18s.;Jo 5.45ss.;8.47a palavra que falei, esta o julgará no *cp.Mt 10.15último dia. 49 *Jo 3.11Pois eu por mim mesmo não falei, mas o Pai, que me enviou, *Jo 14.31; cp.17.8este mesmo me tem prescrito o que devo dizer e o que devo falar. 50 Eu sei que *cp.Jo 6.68o seu mandamento é vida eterna. Aquilo, pois, que eu falo, falo-o *Jo 8.28como o Pai mo tem dito.

1 Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. 2 So they made him a supper there. Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with him. 3 Therefore Mary took a pound*12:3 a Roman pound of 12 ounces, or about 340 grams of ointment of pure nard, very precious, and anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.

4 Then Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, one of his disciples, who would betray him, said, 5 "Why wasn’t this ointment sold for three hundred denarii*12:5 300 denarii was about a year’s wages for an agricultural laborer. and given to the poor?" 6 Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the money box, used to steal what was put into it.

7 But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She has kept this for the day of my burial. 8 For you always have the poor with you, but you don’t always have me."

9 A large crowd therefore of the Jews learned that he was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 But the chief priests conspired to put Lazarus to death also, 11 because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.

12 On the next day a great multitude had come to the feast. When they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 they took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet him, and cried out, "Hosanna!*12:13 "Hosanna" means "save us" or "help us, we pray". Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord,✝12:13 Psalms 118:25-26 the King of Israel!"

14 Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat on it. As it is written, 15 "Don’t be afraid, daughter of Zion. Behold, your King comes, sitting on a donkey’s colt."✝12:15 Zechariah 9:9 16 His disciples didn’t understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about him, and that they had done these things to him. 17 The multitude therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead was testifying about it. 18 For this cause also the multitude went and met him, because they heard that he had done this sign. 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, "See how you accomplish nothing. Behold, the world has gone after him."

20 Now there were certain Greeks among those who went up to worship at the feast. 21 Therefore, these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, "Sir, we want to see Jesus." 22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn, Andrew came with Philip, and they told Jesus.

23 Jesus answered them, "The time has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Most certainly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 He who loves his life will lose it. He who hates his life in this world will keep it to eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, let him follow me. Where I am, there my servant will also be. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

27 "Now my soul is troubled. What shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this time’? But I came to this time for this cause. 28 Father, glorify your name!"

Then a voice came out of the sky, saying, "I have both glorified it and will glorify it again."

29 Therefore the multitude who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him."

30 Jesus answered, "This voice hasn’t come for my sake, but for your sakes. 31 Now is the judgment of this world. Now the prince of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." 33 But he said this, signifying by what kind of death he should die.

34 The multitude answered him, "We have heard out of the law that the Christ remains forever.✝12:34 Isaiah 9:7; Daniel 2:44; See Isaiah 53:8 How do you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?"

35 Jesus therefore said to them, "Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness doesn’t overtake you. He who walks in the darkness doesn’t know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become children of light." Jesus said these things, and he departed and hid himself from them. 37 But though he had done so many signs before them, yet they didn’t believe in him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke:

"Lord, who has believed our report?

To whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"✝12:38 Isaiah 53:1

39 For this cause they couldn’t believe, for Isaiah said again:

40 "He has blinded their eyes and he hardened their heart,

lest they should see with their eyes,

and perceive with their heart,

and would turn,

and I would heal them."✝12:40 Isaiah 6:10

41 Isaiah said these things when he saw his glory, and spoke of him.✝12:41 Isaiah 6:1 42 Nevertheless, even many of the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they didn’t confess it, so that they wouldn’t be put out of the synagogue, 43 for they loved men’s praise more than God’s praise.

44 Jesus cried out and said, "Whoever believes in me, believes not in me, but in him who sent me. 45 He who sees me sees him who sent me. 46 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in the darkness. 47 If anyone listens to my sayings and doesn’t believe, I don’t judge him. For I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 He who rejects me, and doesn’t receive my sayings, has one who judges him. The word that I spoke will judge him in the last day. 49 For I spoke not from myself, but the Father who sent me gave me a commandment, what I should say and what I should speak. 50 I know that his commandment is eternal life. The things therefore which I speak, even as the Father has said to me, so I speak."
