A ressurreição de Lázaro

1 Estava doente um homem chamado Lázaro, de *Mt 21.17;Jo 11.18Betânia, da aldeia de Maria e sua irmã *Jo 11.5,19ss.;Lc 10.38Marta. 2 Maria, cujo irmão Lázaro se achava doente, era a que *Jo 12.3; cp.Lc 7.38ungira *Lc 7.13;Jo 11.3,21,32; cp.Jo 13.13s.o Senhor com perfume e lhe enxugara os pés com os seus cabelos. 3 Mandaram, pois, as irmãs de Lázaro dizer a Jesus: *Lc 7.13;Jo 11.3,21,32; cp.Jo 13.13s.Senhor, *cp.Jo 11.5,11,36aquele que amas está doente. 4 Ao saber isso, disse Jesus: Esta doença não é para morte, mas para a *Jo 11.40; cp.Jo 9.3;10.38glória de Deus, a fim de que o Filho de Deus seja por ela glorificado. 5 Ora, Jesus estimava a *Jo 11.1Marta, e a sua irmã, e a Lázaro. 6 Tendo sabido, pois, que este estava doente, demorou-se ainda dois dias no lugar onde se achava. 7 Então, passado isso, disse aos discípulos: *cp.Jo 10.40Voltemos para a Judeia. 8 Perguntaram estes: *Mt 23.7Mestre, agora mesmo os judeus procuravam *Jo 10.31; vd.8.59apedrejar-te, e voltas ainda para lá? 9 Respondeu Jesus: *cp.Lc 13.33;Jo 9.4;12.35Não são doze as horas do dia? Se alguém andar de dia, não tropeça, porque vê a luz deste mundo; 10 mas, se alguém andar de noite, tropeça, porque a luz não está nele. 11 Assim falou e depois lhes disse: Nosso *cp.Jo 11.3amigo Lázaro *Mt 27.52;Mc 5.39;Jo 11.13;At 7.60dorme, mas vou despertá-lo do sono. 12 Disseram-lhe, então, os discípulos: Senhor, se dorme, ficará bom. 13 *Mt 9.24;Lc 8.52Jesus tinha falado da morte de Lázaro; mas eles supunham que falasse do repouso do sono. 14 Disse-lhes, pois, Jesus abertamente: Lázaro morreu; 15 e, por vossa causa, folgo de não me achar lá, para que creiais; mas vamos ter com ele. 16 Então, *Mt 10.3;Mc 3.18;Lc 6.15;Jo 14.5;20.26-28;At 1.13Tomé, chamado *Jo 20.24;21.2Dídimo, disse aos seus condiscípulos: Vamos também nós, para morrermos com ele.

17 Chegando Jesus, achou que estava Lázaro no túmulo havia *Jo 11.39já quatro dias. 18 Ora, *Jo 11.1Betânia distava de Jerusalém cerca de quinze estádios*Estádio, medida itinerária de 185 metros.. 19 Muitos dos *Jo 1.19;Jo 11.8judeus tinham vindo ter com Marta e Maria, para *Jo 11.31;Jó 2.11; cp.1Sm 31.13;1Cr 10.12as consolar pela morte de seu irmão. 20 Marta, quando soube que vinha Jesus, foi encontrá-lo; *cp.Lc 10.38-42Maria, porém, ficou sentada em casa. 21 Disse, então, Marta a Jesus: *Jo 11.2Senhor, *Jo 11.32; cp.Jo 11.37se tivesses estado aqui, não teria morrido meu irmão. 22 E mesmo agora sei que *Jo 11.41s.; cp.9.31tudo o que pedires a Deus Deus to dará. 23 Respondeu-lhe Jesus: Teu irmão há de ressuscitar. 24 *Dn 12.2; cp.At 24.15;Jo 5.28s.Eu sei, replicou Marta, que ele há de ressuscitar na ressurreição, no último dia. 25 Disse-lhe Jesus: *cp.Jo 1.4;5.26;6.39s.;Ap 1.18Eu sou a ressurreição e a vida. O que crê em mim, ainda que esteja morto, viverá; 26 e todo o que vive e crê em mim *Jo 6.47,50-51;8.51nunca jamais morrerá. Crês isso? 27 Sim, Senhor, respondeu ela, eu creio que tu és *Mt 16.16; cp.Lc 2.11o Cristo, o Filho de Deus que *Jo 6.14havia de vir ao mundo. 28 Tendo dito isso, *Jo 11.30foi ela chamar a Maria, sua irmã, e lhe disse em particular: Está aí *Mt 26.18;Mc 14.14;Lc 22.11; cp.Jo 13.13o Mestre e te chama. 29 Ela, ouvindo isso, levantou-se depressa e foi ter com ele 30 (pois Jesus não havia ainda entrado na aldeia, mas *Jo 11.20permanecia no lugar onde Marta o encontrara). 31 *Jo 11.19;Jo 11.33Os judeus que estavam com Maria em casa *Jo 11.19e a consolavam, vendo-a levantar-se depressa e partir, seguiram-na, pensando que ela ia ao túmulo para ali chorar. 32 Quando Maria chegou ao lugar onde estava Jesus, ao vê-lo, lançou-se-lhe aos pés, dizendo: *Jo 11.2Senhor, *Jo 11.21se tivesses estado aqui, não teria morrido meu irmão. 33 Jesus, vendo-a chorar e chorar também *Jo 11.19os judeus que a acompanhavam, *Jo 11.38gemeu em espírito, *cp.Jo 12.27;13.21perturbou-se 34 e perguntou: Onde o pusestes? Eles lhe responderam: Senhor, vem e vê. 35 Jesus *cp.Lc 19.41chorou. 36 *Jo 11.19Os judeus, então, diziam: Vede como ele *cp.Jo 11.3o amava! 37 Mas alguns deles disseram: Não podia este homem, que *Jo 9.7abriu os olhos ao cego, fazer que este não morresse? 38 Jesus, *Jo 11.33gemendo outra vez em si mesmo, foi ao túmulo; era este uma *cp.Mt 27.60;Mc 15.46;Lc 24.2;Jo 20.1gruta, a cuja entrada estava posta uma pedra. 39 Jesus disse: Tirai a pedra. Disse-lhe Marta, irmã do morto: Senhor, ele já cheira mal; porque está morto há *Jo 11.17quatro dias. 40 Respondeu-lhe Jesus: *Jo 11.4,23ss.Não te disse eu que, se creres, verás a glória de Deus? 41 Tiraram, então, a pedra. Jesus, *Jo 17.1; cp.At 7.55levantando os olhos, disse: *Mt 11.25Pai, graças te dou que me ouviste. 42 Eu sabia que sempre me ouves, mas assim falei *cp.Jo 12.30;17.21por causa desta multidão que me cerca, a fim de crerem que *Jo 3.17tu me enviaste. 43 Tendo assim falado, clamou em alta voz: Lázaro, sai para fora! 44 Saiu aquele que estivera morto, *Jo 19.40ligados os pés e as mãos com faixas *cp.Jo 20.7e envolto o seu rosto em um lenço. Disse-lhes Jesus: Desatai-o e deixai-o ir.

45 *Jo 7.31Muitos dos judeus *Jo 11.19; cp.Jo 12.17s.que vieram ter com Maria e *Jo 2.23viram o que fizera Jesus creram nele. 46 Alguns deles, porém, foram ter com os *Jo 11.57; cp.Jo 7.32,45fariseus e lhes contaram o que Jesus tinha feito.

O plano para tirar a vida a Jesus

47 Então, os principais sacerdotes e os fariseus *Mt 26.3convocaram uma *Mt 5.22reunião do Sinédrio e disseram: Que estamos fazendo, pois que esse homem faz muitos *Jo 2.11milagres? 48 Se o deixarmos assim, todos crerão nele; e virão os romanos e nos tirarão tanto o nosso *cp.Mt 24.15lugar como a nossa nação. 49 *Mt 26.3Caifás, porém, um dentre eles, *Jo 11.51;Jo 18.13sumo sacerdote naquele ano, disse-lhes: Vós nada sabeis, 50 nem considerais que *Jo 18.14vos convém que morra um só homem pelo povo e que não pereça toda a nação. 51 Ora, ele não disse isso por si mesmo; mas, sendo sumo sacerdote daquele ano, *cp.Êx 28.30;Nm 27.21;1Sm 23.9;30.7;Ed 2.63profetizou que Jesus havia de morrer pela nação 52 e não somente pela nação, mas também para *Jo 10.16reunir em um corpo os filhos de Deus, que estão dispersos. 53 Desde aquele dia, *Mt 26.4resolveram tirar-lhe a vida.

54 Assim, já não *Jo 7.1andava Jesus abertamente entre os judeus, mas retirou-se dali para uma região próxima do deserto, a uma cidade chamada *2Cr 13.19Efraim; e ali ficou com os discípulos. 55 Estava próxima a *Mt 26.1s.;Mc 14.1;Lc 22.1;Jo 12.1;13.1;Jo 2.13Páscoa dos judeus; e muitos subiram daquela região a Jerusalém antes da Páscoa, para *Nm 9.10;2Cr 30.17s.; cp.Jo 18.28se purificarem. 56 *Jo 7.11Procuravam a Jesus e perguntavam uns aos outros, estando no templo: Que vos parece? Não virá ele à festa? 57 Ora, os *Jo 11.47principais sacerdotes e os fariseus tinham dado ordens que, se alguém soubesse onde ele estava, o denunciasse, para o prenderem.

1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha. 2 It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, "Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick."

4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it." 5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was. 7 Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let’s go into Judea again."

8 The disciples asked him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?"

9 Jesus answered, "Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10 But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him." 11 He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep."

12 The disciples therefore said, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."

13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep. 14 So Jesus said to them plainly then, "Lazarus is dead. 15 I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him."

16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus,*11:16 "Didymus" means "Twin". said to his fellow disciples, "Let’s also go, that we may die with him."

17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia*11:18 15 stadia is about 2.8 kilometers or 1.7 miles away. 19 Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. 20 Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house. 21 Therefore Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22 Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you."

23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."

24 Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."

25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. 26 Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

27 She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world."

28 When she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here and is calling you."

29 When she heard this, she arose quickly and went to him. 30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him. 31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, "She is going to the tomb to weep there."

32 Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died."

33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled, 34 and said, "Where have you laid him?"

They told him, "Lord, come and see."

35 Jesus wept.

36 The Jews therefore said, "See how much affection he had for him!" 37 Some of them said, "Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?"

38 Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, "Take away the stone."

Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."

40 Jesus said to her, "Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?"

41 So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying.*11:41 NU omits "from the place where the dead man was lying." Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me. 42 I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me." 43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

44 He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth.

Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go."

45 Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him. 46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done. 47 The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs. 48 If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."

49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all, 50 nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish." 51 Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death. 54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.

55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. 56 Then they sought for Jesus and spoke with one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?" 57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
