A pregação de João Batista

4 Ora, o mesmo João usava *2Rs 1.8; cp.Zc 13.4uma veste de pelo de camelo e uma correia em volta da cintura; e alimentava-se de *Lv 11.22gafanhotos e mel silvestre. 5 Então, ia ter com ele o povo de Jerusalém, de toda a Judeia e de toda *Lc 3.3a circunvizinhança do Jordão; 6 e eram por ele batizados no rio Jordão, confessando os seus pecados. 7 Mas, vendo João que muitos *cp.Mt 23.13,15;16.1ss.fariseus e *cp.Mt 22.23;16.1ss.;At 4.1;5.17;23.6ss.saduceus vinham ao seu batismo, disse-lhes: *Mt 12.34;23.33Raça de víboras, quem vos recomendou que fugísseis *1Ts 1.10da ira vindoura? 8 Dai, pois, frutos *At 26.20dignos do vosso arrependimento 9 e não queirais dizer dentro de vós mesmos: *Jo 8.33,39Temos como pai a Abraão; porque vos declaro que destas pedras Deus pode suscitar filhos a Abraão. 10 O machado já está posto à raiz das árvores; *Mt 7.19toda árvore, pois, que não dá bom fruto é cortada e lançada no fogo. 11 *vd.Jo 1.26Eu, na verdade, vos batizo com água para o arrependimento; mas aquele que há de vir depois de mim é mais poderoso do que eu, e não sou digno de levar-lhe as sandálias; *Jo 1.33ele vos batizará com o Espírito Santo e com fogo. 12 *Lc 3.17; cp.Is 30.24A sua pá, ele a tem na sua mão e limpará bem a sua eira; *Mt 13.30recolherá o seu trigo no celeiro, mas queimará a palha em *Mc 9.43,48fogo inextinguível.

O batismo de Jesus

Então ele anuiu. 16 Batizado que foi Jesus, saiu logo da água; eis que se abriram os céus, *Jo 1.32e veio o Espírito de Deus descer como pomba e vir sobre ele; e uma voz dos céus disse: 17 *Mt 12.18;17.5;Mc 9.7;Lc 9.35; cp.Is 42.1Este é o meu Filho dileto, em quem me agrado.

1 In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, 2 "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!" 3 For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying,

"The voice of one crying in the wilderness,

make the way of the Lord ready!

4 Now John himself wore clothing made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him. 6 They were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them, "You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance! 9 Don’t think to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 10 Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.

11 "I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.*3:11 TR and NU add "and with fire" 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire."

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan*3:13 i.e., the Jordan River to John, to be baptized by him. 14 But John would have hindered him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?"

15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, "Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him.

16 Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him. 17 Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
