1 Eu, Paulo, vos exorto pela mansidão e bondade de Cristo, eu que me mostro humilde quando estou entre vós, mas, quando longe, sou ousado convosco.2 Peço-vos que, quando eu estiver presente, não me veja obrigado a usar de minha autoridade de que pretendo realmente usar com certas pessoas que imaginam que nós procedemos com intenções humanas.3 Porque, ainda que vivamos na carne, não militamos segundo a carne.4 Não são carnais as armas com que lutamos. São poderosas, em Deus, capazes de arrasar fortificações.5 Nós aniquilamos todo raciocínio e todo orgulho que se levanta contra o conhecimento de Deus, e cativamos todo pensamento e o reduzimos à obediência a Cristo.6 Estamos prontos também para castigar todos os desobedientes, assim que for perfeita a vossa obediência.7 Julgais as coisas pela aparência!... Quem se gloria de pertencer a Cristo considere que, como ele é de Cristo, assim também nós o somos.8 Ainda que eu me orgulhasse um pouco em demasia da autoridade que o Senhor nos deu, para vossa edificação e não para vossa ruína, não teria de que envergonhar-me.9 Não quero, porém, dar a impressão de querer aterrar-vos com minhas cartas.10 Suas cartas, dizem, são imperativas e fortes, mas, quando está presente, a sua pessoa é fraca e a palavra desprezível.11 Quem assim pensa, fique sabendo que quais somos por escrito nas cartas, quando estamos ausentes, tais seremos também de fato, quando estivermos presentes.12 Em verdade, não ousamos equiparar-nos nem comparar-nos com alguns que se preconizam a si próprios. Medindo-se eles conforme a sua própria medida e comparando-se consigo mesmos, dão provas de pouco bom senso.13 Nós outros não nos gloriaremos além da medida, mas permaneceremos dentro do campo de ação que Deus nos determinou, levando-nos até vós.14 Não passamos além dos limites. Estaríamos passando, caso não houvéssemos chegado até vós. Ora, realmente temos chegado até vós, pregando o Evangelho de Cristo.15 Não nos ufanamos além da medida, cobrindo-nos de trabalhos alheios. Esperamos que, com o progresso de vossa fé, nossa obra cresça entre vós dentro do quadro de ação que nos foi determinado.16 Assim esperamos levar o Evangelho aos países que ficam além de vós, sem nos gloriarmos das obras realizadas por outros dentro do domínio reservado a eles.17 Ora, quem se gloria, glorie-se no Senhor.18 Pois merece a aprovação não aquele que se recomenda a si mesmo, mas aquele que o Senhor recomenda.

1 Now I, Paul, myself beseech you by the meekness and clemency of the Christ (who in presence [am] low among you, but being absent am bold toward you)2 but I beseech [you] that I [need] not be bold when I am present with that confidence, with which I am esteemed to use against some who regard us as if we walked according to the flesh.3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh4 (For the weapons of our warfare [are] not carnal, but mighty through God for the destruction of strong holds),5 casting down reasonings and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and leading captive every thought into the obedience of the Christ6 and having a readiness to avenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.7 Do ye look on things after the [outward] appearance? If anyone trusts to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that as he [is] Christ's, even so we [are] Christ's.8 For though I should glory somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord has given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I shall not be ashamed,9 That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.10 For [his] letters, they say, [are] weighty and powerful; but [his] bodily presence [is] weak, and [his] speech contemptible.11 Let such a one think this, that such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such [will we be] also in deed when we are present.12 For we dare not mix ourselves in with or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves, but they do not understand that they are measuring themselves by themselves and comparing themselves among themselves.13 But we will not glory of things beyond [our] measure, but according to the measure of the rule, of the measure which God has distributed to us, to reach even unto you.14 For we do not overextend ourselves by reaching unto you; for we are also come unto you with the gospel of the Christ,15 Not glorying of things beyond [our] measure in the labours of others; but having hope of the increase of your faith, that we shall be abundantly enlarged among you according to our rule,16 to preach the gospel in the [regions] beyond you, without [entering into] the measure of another to glory in that which has already been made ready.17 But he that glories, let him glory in the Lord.18 For [it is] not he that commends himself [that] is approved, but whom the Lord commends.:
