1 Enquanto, pois, subsiste a promessa de entrar no seu descanso, tenhamos cuidado em que ninguém de nós corra o risco de ser excluído.2 A boa nova nos foi trazida a nós, como o foi a eles. Mas a eles de nada aproveitou, porque caíram na descrença.3 Nós, porém, se tivermos fé, haveremos de entrar no descanso. Ele disse: Eu jurei na minha ira: não entrarão no lugar do meu descanso. Ora, as obras de Deus estão concluídas desde a criação do mundo;4 pois, em certa passagem, falou do sétimo dia o seguinte: E, terminado o seu trabalho, descansou Deus no sétimo dia {Gn 2,2}.5 Se, pois, ele repete: Não entrarão no lugar do meu descanso,6 é sinal de que outros são chamados a entrar nele. E como aqueles a quem primeiro foi anunciada a promessa não entraram por não ter tido a fé,7 Deus, após muitos anos, por meio de Davi, estabelece um novo dia, um hoje, ao pronunciar as palavras mencionadas: Hoje, se ouvirdes a sua voz, não endureçais os vossos corações.8 Se Josué lhes houvesse dado repouso, não teria depois disso falado dum outro dia.9 Por isso, resta um repouso sabático para o povo de Deus.10 E quem entrar nesse repouso descansará das suas obras, assim como descansou Deus das suas.11 Assim, apressemo-nos a entrar neste descanso para não cairmos por nossa vez na mesma incredulidade.12 Porque a palavra de Deus é viva, eficaz, mais penetrante do que uma espada de dois gumes e atinge até a divisão da alma e do corpo, das juntas e medulas, e discerne os pensamentos e intenções do coração.13 Nenhuma criatura lhe é invisível. Tudo é nu e descoberto aos olhos daquele a quem havemos de prestar contas.14 Temos, portanto, um grande Sumo Sacerdote que penetrou nos céus, Jesus, Filho de Deus. Conservemos firme a nossa fé.15 Porque não temos nele um pontífice incapaz de compadecer-se das nossas fraquezas. Ao contrário, passou pelas mesmas provações que nós, com exceção do pecado.16 Aproximemo-nos, pois, confiadamente do trono da graça, a fim de alcançar misericórdia e achar a graça de um auxílio oportuno.

1 Let us, therefore, fear, lest a promise being left [us] of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them, but it did not profit those that heard the word without mixing [it] with faith.3 (For we who have believed do enter into the rest) as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, they shall not enter into my rest although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.4 For he spoke in a certain place of the seventh [day] like this, And God rested the seventh day from all his works.5 And in this [place] again, They shall not enter into my rest.6 Seeing, therefore, it remains that some must enter therein, and those to whom it was first preached did not enter in because of disobedience;7 Again, he determines a certain day, [saying], Today, by David so long a time afterward; as it is said, Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then he would not afterward have spoken of another day.9 There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also has ceased from his own works, as God [did] from his.11 Let us therefore make haste to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience.12 For the word of God [is] alive and efficient and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.13 Neither is there any created thing that is not manifested in his presence, but all things [are] naked and opened unto the eyes of him of whom we speak.14 Having, therefore, a great high priest who penetrated the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast this profession [of our hope].15 For we [do] not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted like as [we are], yet without sin.16 Let us, therefore, come boldly unto the throne of his grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.:
