1 Desse modo, cercados como estamos de uma tal nuvem de testemunhas, desvencilhemo-nos das cadeias do pecado. Corramos com perseverança ao combate proposto, com o olhar fixo no autor e consumador de nossa fé, Jesus.2 Em vez de gozo que se lhe oferecera, ele suportou a cruz e está sentado à direita do trono de Deus.3 Considerai, pois, atentamente aquele que sofreu tantas contrariedades dos pecadores, e não vos deixeis abater pelo desânimo.4 Ainda não tendes resistido até o sangue, na luta contra o pecado.5 Estais esquecidos da palavra de animação que vos é dirigida como a filhos: Filho meu, não desprezes a correção do Senhor. Não desanimes, quando repreendido por ele;6 pois o Senhor corrige a quem ama e castiga todo aquele que reconhece por seu filho {Pr 3,11s}.7 Estais sendo provados para a vossa correção: é Deus que vos trata como filhos. Ora, qual é o filho a quem seu pai não corrige?8 Mas se permanecêsseis sem a correção que é comum a todos, seríeis bastardos e não filhos legítimos.9 Aliás, temos na terra nossos pais que nos corrigem e, no entanto, os olhamos com respeito. Com quanto mais razão nos havemos de submeter ao Pai de nossas almas, o qual nos dará a vida?10 Os primeiros nos educaram para pouco tempo, segundo a sua própria conveniência, ao passo que este o faz para nosso bem, para nos comunicar sua santidade.11 E verdade que toda correção parece, de momento, antes motivo de pesar que de alegria. Mais tarde, porém, granjeia aos que por ela se exercitaram o melhor fruto de justiça e de paz.12 Levantai, pois, vossas mãos fatigadas e vossos joelhos trêmulos {Is 35,3}.13 Dirigi os vossos passos pelo caminho certo. Os que claudicam tornem ao bom caminho e não se desviem.14 Procurai a paz com todos e ao mesmo tempo a santidade, sem a qual ninguém pode ver o Senhor.15 Estai alerta para que ninguém deixe passar a graça de Deus, e para que não desponte nenhuma planta amarga, capaz de estragar e contaminar a massa inteira.16 Que não haja entre vós ninguém sensual nem profanador como Esaú, que, por um prato de comida, vendeu o seu direito de primogenitura.17 E sabeis que, desejando ele em seguida receber a bênção do herdeiro, lhe foi recusada. E não bastaram todas as súplicas e lágrimas para que seu pai mudasse de sentimento...18 Em verdade, não vos aproximastes de uma montanha palpável, invadida por fogo violento, nuvem, trevas, tempestade,19 som da trombeta e aquela voz tão terrível que os que a ouviram suplicaram que ela não lhes falasse mais.20 Estavam verdadeiramente aterrados por esta ordem: Todo aquele que tocar a montanha, mesmo que seja um animal, será apedrejado {Ex 19,12}.21 E tão terrível era o espetáculo, que Moisés exclamou: Eu tremo de pavor {Dt 9,19}.22 Vós, ao contrário, vos aproximastes da montanha de Sião, da cidade do Deus vivo, da Jerusalém celestial, das miríades de anjos,23 da assembléia festiva dos primeiros inscritos no livro dos céus, e de Deus, juiz universal, e das almas dos justos que chegaram à perfeição,24 enfim, de Jesus, o mediador da Nova Aliança, e do sangue da aspersão, que fala com mais eloqüência que o sangue de Abel.25 Guardai-vos, pois, de recusar ouvir aquele que fala. Porque, se não escaparam do castigo aqueles que dele se desviaram, quando lhes falava na terra, muito menos escaparemos nós, se o repelirmos, quando nos fala desde o céu.26 Depois de ter outrora abalado a terra pela sua voz, ele hoje nos faz esta solene declaração: Ainda uma vez por todas moverei, não só a terra, mas também o céu {Ag 2,6}.27 As palavras ainda uma vez indicam o desaparecimento do que é caduco, do que foi criado, para que só subsista o que é imutável.28 sim, possuindo nós um reino inabalável, dediquemos a Deus um reconhecimento que lhe torne agradável o nosso culto com temor e respeito.29 Porque nosso Deus é um fogo devorador {Dt 4,24}.

1 Therefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, leaving behind all the weight of the sin which surrounds us, let us run with patience the race that is set before us,2 with our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of [our] faith, who having been offered joy, endured the stake, despising the shame and was seated at the right hand of the throne of God.3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself lest ye be wearied in your souls and faint.4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, fighting against sin.5 And ye have quite forgotten the consolation which speaks unto you as unto sons, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art reproved of him:6 for whom the Lord loves, he chastens and scourges everyone whom he receives as [a] son.7 If ye endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father does not chasten?8 But if ye are without chastisement, of which all [the sons] are partakers, then ye are bastards, and not sons.9 Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected [us], and we gave [them] reverence; is it not much better to be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and we shall live?10 For they verily for a few days chastened [us] as it seemed good unto them, but he for [our] profit, that [we] might be partakers of his holiness.11 It is true that no chastening at present seems to be [cause] for joy, but rather for grief; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto those who are exercised by it.12 Therefore, lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees,13 and make straight steps unto your feet, so that which is lame will not turn out of the way, but let it rather be healed.14 Follow peace with everyone and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord:15 looking diligently that no one deviate from the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up impede [you], and thereby many be defiled,16 lest there [be] any fornicator or profane person as Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.17 For ye know how that afterward, desiring to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.18 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched and that burned with fire nor unto blackness and darkness and tempest19 and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, which [voice] those that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more;20 (for they could not endure that which was commanded, and if so much as a beast should touch the mountain, it shall be stoned or thrust through with a dart:21 and so terrible was the sight [that] Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake);22 but ye are come unto mount Sion and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,23 to the congregation of the church of the firstborn, who are registered in the heavens and to God the Judge of all and to the spirits of just men made perfect24 and to Jesus, the mediator of the new testament and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better than [that of] Abel.25 See that you do not refuse him that speaks. For if those who refused him that spoke on earth did not escape, much less [shall we escape], if we turn away from him that [speaks] from the heavens,26 whose voice then shook the earth; but now he has promised, saying, Yet even once, I shall shake not the earth only, but also the heaven.27 And this [word], Yet even once, signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.28 Therefore, receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us hold fast to the grace, by which we serve God, pleasing him with reverence and godly fear:29 for our God [is] a consuming fire.:
