1 O ponto essencial do que acabamos de dizer é este: temos um Sumo Sacerdote, que está sentado à direita do trono da Majestade divina nos céus,2 Ministro do santuário e do verdadeiro tabernáculo, erigido pelo Senhor, e não por homens.3 Todo pontífice é constituído para oferecer dons e sacrifícios. Portanto, é necessário que ele tenha algo para oferecer.4 Por conseguinte, se ele estivesse na terra, nem mesmo sacerdote seria, porque já existem aqui sacerdotes que têm a missão, de oferecer os dons prescritos pela lei.5 O culto que estes celebram é, aliás, apenas a imagem, sombra das realidades celestiais, como foi revelado a Moisés quando estava para construir o tabernáculo: Olha, foi-lhe dito, faze todas as coisas conforme o modelo que te foi mostrado no monte {Ex 25,40}.6 Ao nosso Sumo Sacerdote, entretanto, compete ministério tanto mais excelente quanto ele é mediador de uma aliança mais perfeita, selada por melhores promessas.7 Porque, se a primeira tivesse sido sem defeito, certamente não haveria lugar para outra.8 Ora, sem dúvida, há uma censura nestas palavras: Eis que virão dias - oráculo do Senhor - em que estabelecerei, com a casa de Israel e com a casa de Judá uma aliança nova.9 Não coma a aliança que fiz com os seus pais no dia em que os tomei pela mão para tirá-los da terra do Egito. Como eles não permaneceram fiéis ao pacto, eu me desinteressei deles - oráculo do Senhor.10 Mas esta é a aliança que estabelecerei com a casa de Israel depois daqueles dias: imprimirei as minhas leis no seu espírito e as gravarei no seu coração. Eu serei seu Deus, e eles serão meu povo.11 Ninguém mais terá que ensinar a seu concidadão, ninguém a seu irmão, dizendo: "Conhece o Senhor", porque todos me conhecerão, desde o menor até o maior.12 Eu lhes perdoarei as suas iniqüidades, e já não me lembrarei dos seus pecados {Jr 31,31-34}.13 Se Deus fala de uma aliança nova é que ele declara antiquada a precedente. Ora, o que é antiquado e envelhecido está certamente fadado a desaparecer.

1 Now of the things which we have spoken, [this is] the sum: We have such a high priest who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,2 [a] minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices; therefore, [it is] also necessary that this one have something to offer.4 For if he were on earth, he should not even be a priest, being present still the other priests that offer gifts according to the law,5 (who serve as an example and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was admonished [of God] when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, [that] thou make all things according to the pattern showed unto thee in the mount);6 but now a more excellent ministry is his, in that he is the mediator of a better testament, which was established upon better promises.7 For if that first [covenant] had been faultless, then no place should have been sought for the second.8 For finding fault with them, he said, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new testament with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,9 not according to the testament that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, because they did not continue in my testament, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.10 For this [is] the testament that I will ordain to the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord: I will give my laws into their soul and write them upon their hearts, and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:11 and no one shall teach his neighbour nor anyone his brother, saying, Know the Lord, for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.12 For I will reconcile their iniquities and their sins, and their iniquities I will remember no more.13 In that he says, New, he has made the first old. Now that which decays and waxes old [is] ready to vanish away.:
