1 Partindo dali, fomos para o deserto na direção do mar Vermelho, segundo a ordem do Senhor, e andamos muito tempo em torno do monte Seir.2 O Senhor então me disse:3 basta de girar em volta deste monte; dirigi-vos para o norte.4 Ordena ao povo: atravessareis o território de vossos irmãos, os filhos de Esaú, que habitam em Seir. Eles têm medo de vós;5 mas guardai-vos de entrar em luta contra eles, porque não vos darei nada de sua terra, nem mesmo a medida de um pé; é a Esaú que dei a propriedade das montanhas de Seir.6 Comprar-lhes-eis a preço de dinheiro o necessário para alimentar-vos, e pagareis mesmo a água que beberdes,7 porque o Senhor teu Deu s te abençoou em todas as tuas empresas, e velou sobre ti durante a tua marcha através desse vasto deserto. Eis já quarenta anos que o Senhor teu Deus está contigo, e nada te faltou.8 Passamos, pois, ao longe de nossos irmãos, os filhos de Esaú, que habitam em Seir, evitando o caminho da planície, assim como Elat e Asiongaber. Voltamos e tomamos o caminho na direção do deserto de Moab.9 Então o Senhor me disse: não ataques os moabitas e não entres em guerra contra eles, porque não te darei nada de sua terra; foi aos filhos de Lot que dei Ar como herança.10 { Outrora habitavam os e mim nessa terra. Era uni povo grande, numeroso e de alta estatura, como os enacim.11 Também eles eram considerados refaim, corno os enacim; irias os moabitas chamavam-nos emim.12 Em Seir habitavam também os horreus, os quais foram expulsos pelos filhos de Esaú. Estes, após os haverem exterminado, estabeleceram-se em seu lugar, como o fez Israel na terra que o Senhor lhe deu em possessão.}13 Vamos, pois! Passai a torrente de Zered. Passamos então a torrente de Zered.14 Durou trinta e oito anos essa nossa viagem de Cades-Barne até a passagem da torrente de Zered. Entretanto, extinguiu-se do acampamento toda a geração dos homens de guerra, assim como o Senhor o tinha jurado.15 A mão do Senhor pesou sobre eles, e foram cortados do acampamento até a sua completa extinção.16 Depois que todos esses homens de guerra desapareceram do meio de seu povo, levados pela morte,17 o Senhor disse-me:18 passarás hoje a fronteira de Moab, Ar,19 e encontrar-te-ás em face dos amonitas. Não os ataques, nem lhes faças guerra, porque não te darei nada da sua terra; foi aos filhos de Lot que dei a possessão dessa terra.20 {Também esta foi reputada terra dos refaim, chamados pelos amonitas de zanzomim,21 povo grande, numeroso e de alta estatura como os enacim. Mas o Senhor exterminou-os diante dos amonitas, que os despojaram e habitaram em lugar deles.22 Foi o que o Senhor tinha feito pelos filhos de Esaú, que habitam em Seir, destruindo os horreus diante deles. Despojaram-nos e estabeleceram-se em seu lugar, onde estão ainda hoje.23 Da mesma sorte os heveus, que habitavam nas aldeias até Gaza, foram esmagados pelos caftorim, originários de Caftor, que se estabeleceram em seu lugar.}24 Vamos! Desarmai as tendas e passai a torrente do Arnon. Vê: entrego-te nas mãos Seon, rei de Hesebon, o amorreu, com a sua terra. Começa a despojá-lo e faze-lhe guerra.25 A partir de hoje começarei a derramar o temor e o terror de teu nome entre os povos que habitam debaixo de todos os céus, de sorte que só ao ouvir o teu nome eles tremerão e estarão em pânico por causa de ti.26 Então enviei do deserto de Cademot mensageiros a Seon, rei de Hesebon, com palavras de paz, dizendo:27 Deixa-me atravessar a tua terra; seguirei pela estrada comum, e não me desviarei nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.28 Vender-me-ás por dinheiro o necessário para alimentar-me, e pagar-te-ei mesmo a água que eu beber. Deixa-me somente passar,29 - como fizeram os filhos de Esaú que habitam em Seir, e os moabitas que habitam em Ar -, até que eu chegue ao Jordão e entre na terra que o Senhor nosso Deus nos dá.30 Mas Seon, rei de Hesebon, não consentiu que passássemos por sua terra; o Senhor, teu Deus, obcecara-lhe o espírito e endurecera-lhe o coração, a fim de entregá-lo em tuas mãos, como de fato aconteceu.31 O Senhor disse-me então: vê: estou pronto a entregar-te imediatamente Seon com a sua terra. Empreende a conquista e ocupa-lhe o território.32 Seon saiu com todo o seu povo ao nosso encontro para pelejar contra nós em Jasa.33 Mas o Senhor, nosso Deus, no-lo entregou e nós derrotamo-lo com os seus filhos e todo o seu povo.34 Tomamos-lhe então todas as suas cidades, que votamos ao interdito, com os homens, as mulheres e as crianças, sem deixar escapar ninguém.35 Só nos reservamos os animais e o espólio das cidades conquistadas.36 Desde Aroer, que está à margem da torrente do Arnon, e a cidade situada no vale, até Galaad, não houve lugar tão forte que nos pudesse resistir; o Senhor, nosso Deus, tudo nos entregou.37 Somente não vos aproximastes da terra dos amonitas, nem de lugar algum situado às margens da torrente do Jaboc, nem das cidades da montanha, nem de nenhum dos lugares proibidos pelo Senhor, nosso Deus.

1 Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as the Lord had spoken unto me: and we traveled around mount Seir many days.2 And the Lord said unto me, as followeth,3 Ye have traveled long enough around this mountain; turn yourselves northward.4 And the people command thou, saying, Ye are passing by the border of your brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you; therefore take ye good heed unto yourselves;5 Do not contend with them; for I will not give unto you of their land, even so much as a foot’s breadth; because unto Esau have I given mount Seir for an inheritance.6 Food shall ye buy of them for money, that ye may eat; and water also shall ye buy of them for money, that ye may drink.7 For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand; he hath provided for thy wandering through this great wilderness: these forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.8 And we passed away from our brethren the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from the way through the plain, from Elath, and from ‘Ezyon–gaber. And we turned and passed the way of the wilderness of Moab.9 And the Lord said unto me, Do not attack the Moabites, nor contend with them in battle; for I will not give thee from their land any inheritance, because unto the children of Lot have I given ‘Ar for an inheritance.10 The Emim in times past dwelt therein, a people great, and numerous, and tall as the ‘Anakim;11 As Rephaim were also they accounted, equally with the ‘Anakim; and the Moabites called the m Emim.12 And in Seir dwelt the Chorim in times past; but the children of Esau drove them out, and they destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel hath done unto the land of his inheritance, which the Lord hath given unto them.13 Now rise up, and get you over the brook Zered; and we passed over the brook Zered.14 And the time which we came from Kadesh–barnea’, until we had passed over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were spent from out the midst of the camp, as the Lord had sworn unto them.15 And also the hand of the Lord was against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp; until they were spent.16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were spent by, dying from the midst of the people,17 That the Lord spoke unto me, saying,18 Thou art passing this day by the border of Moab, by ‘Ar,19 And thou comest nigh opposite the children of ‘Ammon: do not attack them, nor contend with them; for I will not give unto thee of the land of the children of ‘Ammon any inheritance; because unto the children of Lot have I given it for an inheritance.20 As the land of Rephaim was it also accounted: Rephaim dwelt therein in times past; and the ‘Ammonites called them Zamzummim;21 A people great, and numerous, and tall, as the ‘Anakim; but the Lord destroyed them before them; and they drove them out, and dwelt in their stead:22 As he hath done to the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from before whom he destroyed the Chorim; and they drove them out and dwelt in their stead, even unto this day.23 And the ‘Avvim, who dwelt in open towns, as far as unto Gazzah,––the Caphtorim, who came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.24 Rise ye up, set forward, and pass over the brook Arnon; behold I have given into thy hand Sichon the king of Cheshbon, the Emorite, and his land: begin to drive him out, and contend with him in battle.25 This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are under the whole heaven; whoever will hear the report of thee, shall tremble, and shall quake because of thee.26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sichon, the king of Cheshbon, with words of peace, saying,27 Let me pass through thy land: always by the highway will I go along; I will not turn unto the right hand or unto the left.28 Food shalt thou sell me for money, that I may eat; and water for money shalt thou give me, that I may drink: only let me pass through on foot;29 (As the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, and the Moabites who dwell in ‘Ar, have done unto me:) until that I shall pass over the Jordan into the land which the Lord our God giveth us.30 But Sichon, the king of Cheshbon, would not suffer our passing by him; for the Lord thy God had hardened his spirit, and had made obstinate his heart, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as hath happened this day.31 And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give up Sichon and his land before thee: begin to drive him out, that thou mayest inherit his land.32 And Sichon came out against us, he and all his people, to the battle at Yahaz.33 And the Lord our God gave him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.34 And we conquered all his cities at that time, and devoted every inhabited city, and the women, and the little ones; we left none that escaped.35 Only the cattle we took as booty unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we had captured.36 From ‘Aro’er, which is by the bank of the brook of Arnon, and the city that is in the brook, even unto Gil’ad, there was not one city which was too strong for us; the whole did the Lord our God give up before us.37 Only unto the land of the children of ‘Ammon didst thou not come nigh, unto the whole margin of the brook Yabbok, and the cities in the mountain, and unto whatsoever the Lord our God had forbidden us.
