1 Moisés convocou todo o Israel e disse-lhe: Ouve, ó Israel, as leis e os preceitos que hoje proclamo aos teus ouvidos: aprende-os e pratica-os cuidadosamente.2 O Senhor, nosso Deus, fez um pacto conosco em Horeb.3 Não foi com os nossos pais que o Senhor fez essa aliança, mas conosco, que estamos hoje aqui ainda vivos.4 Falou-nos o Senhor face a face no monte, do seio do fogo.5 Durante aquele tempo, eu estava entre o Senhor e vós para transmitir-vos suas palavras, porque, aterrados pelo fogo, vós não subistes o monte. Ele disse:6 eu sou o Senhor, teu Deus, que te tirei do Egito, da casa da servidão.7 Não terás outro deus diante de mim.8 Não farás para ti imagem de escultura representando o que quer que seja do que está em cima no céu, ou embaixo na terra, ou nas águas debaixo da terra.9 Não te prostrarás diante delas para render-lhes culto, porque eu, o Senhor, teu Deus, sou um Deus zeloso, que castigo a iniqüidade dos pais nos filhos, até a terceira e a quarta geração daqueles que me odeiam,10 mas uso de misericórdia até a milésima geração com aqueles que me amam e guardam os meus mandamentos.11 Não pronunciarás em vão o nome do Senhor, teu Deus; porque o Senhor não terá por inocente aquele que tiver pronunciado em vão o seu nome.12 Guardarás o dia do sábado e o santificarás, como te ordenou o Senhor, teu Deus.13 Trabalharás seis dias e neles farás todas as tuas obras;14 mas no sétimo dia, que é o repouso do Senhor, teu Deus, não farás trabalho algum, nem tu, nem teu filho, nem tua filha, nem teu servo, nem tua serva, nem teu boi, nem teu jumento, nem teus animais, nem o estrangeiro que vive dentro de teus muros, para que o teu escravo e a tua serva descansem como tu.15 Lembra-te de que foste escravo no Egito, de onde a mão forte e o braço poderoso do teu Senhor te tirou. É por isso que o Senhor, teu Deus, te ordenou observasses o dia do sábado.16 Honra teu pai e tua mãe, como te mandou o Senhor, para que se prolonguem teus dias e prosperes na terra que te deu o Senhor teu Deus.17 Não matarás.18 Não cometerás adultério.19 Não furtarás.20 Não levantarás falso testemunho contra o teu próximo.21 Não cobiçarás a mulher de teu próximo. Não cobiçarás sua casa, nem seu campo, nem seu escravo, nem sua escrava, nem seu boi, nem seu jumento, nem nada do que lhe pertence.22 Tais são as palavras que no monte, do meio do fogo, da nuvem e das trevas, o Senhor dirigiu com voz forte a toda a vossa assembléia, sem juntar mais nada. E escreveu-as em duas tábuas de pedra, que me entregou.23 Ora, depois que ouvistes a voz que saía do meio das trevas e vistes o monte ardendo em fogo, viestes ter comigo com vossos chefes de tribos e vossos anciãos para dizer-me:24 eis que o Senhor, nosso Deus, nos mostrou a sua glória e a sua grandeza, e ouvimos a sua voz do seio do fogo. Hoje vimos que Deus pode falar ao homem sem que este morra.25 Por que, entretanto, nos exporemos à morte? Esse grande fogo nos devorará. Se continuarmos a ouvir a voz do Senhor, nosso Deus, morreremos.26 Qual é o mortal que pode ouvir como nós a voz do Deus vivo, que fala do meio do fogo, e permanecer ainda vivo?27 Quanto a ti, aproxima-te para ouvir o que dirá o Senhor, nosso Deus; dir-nos-ás depois tudo o que ele te disser. E nós, ouvindo-o, obedeceremos.28 Ouvindo vossas palavras quando me faláveis, o Senhor disse-me: ouvi as palavras que esse povo te disse: está bem tudo o que disseram.29 Ah, se tivessem sempre esse mesmo coração, para me temer e guardar meus mandamentos! Seriam então felizes para sempre, eles e seus filhos.30 Vai e dize-lhes que voltem para as suas tendas.31 Tu, porém, fica aqui comigo: vou expor-te todas as ordenações, as leis e os preceitos, que lhes ensinarás, para que as observem na terra que lhes dou em possessão.32 Observai, pois, todas as ordens do Senhor, vosso Deus; não vos aparteis delas nem para a direita nem para a esquerda.33 Seguireis exatamente o caminho que o Senhor, vosso Deus, vos traçou, a fim de que vivais e sejais felizes, e vossos dias se prolonguem na terra que ides possuir.

1 And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the ordinances which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and that ye may observe to do them.2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.3 Not with our fathers did the Lord make this covenant, but with us, we who are here all of us alive this day.4 Face to face did the Lord speak with you on the mount, out of the midst of the fire,5 (I was standing between the Lord and between you at that time, to announce to you the word of the Lord; for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and ye went not up into the mount;) saying,6 I am the Lord thy God, who have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery.7 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.8 Thou shalt not make unto thyself any graven image, any likeness of any thing that is in the heavens above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:9 Thou shalt not bow thyself down unto them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me,10 And showing kindness unto the thousandth generation of them that love me, and keep my commandments.11 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.12 Keep the sabbath–day to sanctify it, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee.13 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;14 But the seventh day is the sabbath in honor of the Lord thy God; on it thou shalt not do any work, neither thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man–servant, nor thy maid–servant, nor thy ox, nor thy ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: in order that thy man–servant and thy maid–servant may rest as well as thou.15 And thou shalt remember that thou hast been a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore hath the Lord thy God commanded thee to observe the sabbath–day.16 Honor thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee: in order that thy days may be prolonged, and in order that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.17 Thou shalt not kill.18 (5:17AA) Neither shalt thou commit adultery.19 (5:17BA) Neither shalt thou steal.20 (5:17CA) Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbor.21 (5:18) Neither shalt thou covet thy neighbor’s wife. Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbor’s house, nor his field, nor his man–servant, nor his maid–servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor’s.22 (5:19) These words did the Lord speak unto all your assembly on the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice, but he did so no more; and he wrote them on two tables of stone, and he gave them unto me.23 (5:20) And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, while the mount was burning with fire, that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;24 (5:21) And ye said, Behold, the Lord our God hath caused us to see his glory and his greatness, and his voice have we heard out of the midst of the fire: this day have we seen that God can speak with man, who nevertheless may live.25 (5:22) But now why should we die? for this great fire may consume us; if we continue to hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, then shall we die.26 (5:23) For where is there any flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, like us, and hath remained alive?27 (5:24) Do thou approach, and hear all that the Lord our God may say; and thou shalt speak unto us all that the Lord our God may speak unto thee; and we will hear and do it.28 (5:25) And the Lord heard the voice of your words, while ye were speaking unto me; and the Lord said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee: they have done well in all that they have spoken.29 (5:26) Who would grant that this their heart might remain in them, to fear me, and to keep all my commandments at all times; in order that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!30 (5:27) Go, say to them, Return you unto your tents.31 (5:28) But as for thee, remain thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.32 (5:29) Observe ye then to do as the Lord your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right or to the left.33 (5:30) altogether in the way, which the Lord your God hath commanded you, shall ye walk; in order that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may remain many days in the land which ye will possess.
