1 Voltamo-nos, em seguida, para os lados de Basan, e Og, seu rei, saiu ao nosso encontro com todo o seu povo para nos combater em Edrai.2 O Senhor disse-me: nada temas, porque eu o entreguei em tuas mãos, com todo o seu povo e sua terra: far-lhe-ás o mesmo que fizeste a Seon, rei dos amorreus, que habita em Hesebon.3 O Senhor, nosso Deus, entregou-nos também Og, rei de Basã, com todo o seu povo, e nós o derrotamos de tal sorte que nem um só dos seus escapou.4 Tomamos então todas as suas cidades {não houve uma sequer que não caísse em nossas mãos}, em número de sessenta, toda a região de Araob, o reino de Og, em Basã.5 Todas essas cidades eram fortificadas, com altas muralhas, portas e ferrolhos, sem contar as numerosas cidades abertas.6 Votamo-las ao interdito, como o tínhamos feito a Seon, rei de Hesebon, com os homens, as mulheres e as crianças.7 Mas reservamo-nos os animais e o espólio das cidades.8 Foi assim que tomamos naquele tempo, aos dois reis dos amorreus, o território que estava além do Jordão, desde a torrente do Arnon até a montanha do Hermon9 {os sidônios dão a Hermon o nome de Sarion, e os amorreus o de Sanir};10 todas as cidades da planície, todo o Galaad e todo o Basã, até Selca e Edrai, cidades do reino de Og, em Basã.11 porque Og, rei de Basã, era o único que restava da raça dos refaim. Vê-se ainda o seu sarcófago, um sarcófago de basalto, em Rabat, cidade dos amonitas. Tem nove côvados de comprimento e quatro de largura, em côvados ordinários.12 Tomamos então posse dessa terra. Dei aos rubenitas e aos gaditas o território desde Aroer, que está no vale do Arnon, assim como a metade da montanha de Galaad, com suas cidades.13 Dei à meia tribo de Manassés o resto de Galaad e todo o Basã, reino de Og: toda a região de Argob, com todo o Basã; e o que se chama a terra dos refaim.14 A Jair, filho de Manassés, coube toda a região de Argob até a fronteira dos gessureus e dos macateus, e ele deu o seu nome às aldeias de Basã, chamadas ainda hoje aldeias de Jair.15 A Maquir, dei Galaad.16 Dei aos rubenitas e aos gaditas a terra que se estende desde Galaad até a torrente do Arnon, servindo de limite o meio do vale, e depois até a torrente de Jaboc, fronteira dos amonitas;17 e enfim a planície do Jordão, desde Ceneret até o mar da planície, o mar Salgado, ao pé das encostas do Fasga, para o oriente.18 Naquele tempo, dei-vos esta ordem: o Senhor, vosso Deus, deu-vos esta terra em herança. Vós, pois, homens valentes, tomareis vossas armas e marchareis à frente de vossos irmãos, os israelitas.19 Somente vossas mulheres, com vossos filhos e vossos animais {sei que tendes muitos animais} ficarão nas cidades que vos dei,20 até que o Senhor tenha assegurado o descanso de vossos irmãos, como o vosso, e tenham por sua vez tomado posse da terra que o Senhor, vosso Deus, lhes dá do outro lado do Jordão. Então cada um voltará à possessão que lhe dei.21 Ao mesmo tempo dei a Josué a ordem seguinte: Viste com os teus olhos tudo o que o Senhor, vosso Deus, fez a esses dois reis: desse modo tratará o Senhor todos os reinos que atravessares.22 Não os temas, porque é o Senhor, vosso Deus, quem combaterá por vós.23 Entrementes, roguei ao Senhor, dizendo:24 Senhor Javé, começastes a mostrar ao vosso servo vossa grandeza e o poder de vossa mão. Qual é, nos céus ou na terra, o deus que pode igualar-se a vós em obras e grandes feitos?25 Ah, se eu pudesse, também eu, passar e ver essa boa terra além do Jordão, essa bela montanha, e o Líbano!26 Mas o Senhor irou-se contra mim por causa de vós, e não me ouviu, mas disse-me: Basta! Não me fales mais em tal coisa!27 Sobe ao cimo do Fasga, lança teus olhos para o ocidente e para o norte, para o meio-dia e para o oriente, e contempla com os teus olhos a região; mas tu não passarás o Jordão.28 Dá as tuas ordens a Josué, anima-o, conforta-o, porque é ele quem irá à frente desse povo e lhe dará a possessão da terra que vais ver.29 E ficamos no vale, defronte de Bet-Fogor.

1 And we turned, and went up the way to Bashan; and ‘Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to the battle at Edre’i.2 And the Lord said unto me, Fear him not; for into thy hand have I given him, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do unto him as thou hast done unto Sichon, the king of the Emorites, who dwelt at Cheshbon.3 And the Lord our God gave into our hands also ‘Og the king of Bashan, and all his people; and we smote him until none was left to him who escaped.4 And we conquered all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, sixty cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of ‘Og in Bashan.5 all these were fortified cities, with high walls, gates, and bars; besides the unwalled towns, which were a great many.6 And we devoted them, as we had done unto Sichon the king of Cheshbon, devoting every inhabited city, the women, and the little ones.7 But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took as booty to ourselves.8 And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Emorites the land which is on this side of the Jordan, from the river of Arnon unto mount Chermon;9 (The Sidonians call Chermon Siryon; and the Emorites call it Senir;)10 All the cities of the plain, and all Gil’ad, and all Bashan, unto Salchah and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of ‘Og in Bashan.11 For only ‘Og the king of Bashan had been left of the remnant of the Rephaim; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; lo! it is in Rabbah of the children of ‘Ammon: nine cubits is its length, and four cubits its breadth, after the arm of a man.12 And of this land, of which we took possession at that time, from ‘Aro’er, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gil’ad, and the cities thereof, I gave unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.13 And the rest of Gil’ad, and all Bashan, the kingdom of ‘Og, I gave unto the half tribe of Menasseh: all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, this is called the land of Rephaim.14 Yair the son of Menasseh took all the region of Argob up to the border of the Geshurites and the Ma–’achathites; and he called them the land of Bashan, after his own name, the villages of Yair, unto this day.15 And unto Machir I gave Gil’ad.16 And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gil’ad even unto the brook Arnon, the land within the river and that adjoining, even unto the brook Yabbok, the border of the children of ‘Ammon;17 The plain also, and the Jordan, and the adjoining land, from Kinnereth even unto the sea of the plain, the Salt Sea, under the declivities of Pisgah, eastward.18 And I commanded you at that time, saying, The Lord your God hath given you this land to possess it: armed shall ye pass over before your brethren the children of Israel, all that are fit to bear arms.19 But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (I know that ye have much cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you;20 Until that the Lord have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and they also have taken possession of the land which the Lord your God giveth them beyond the Jordan: then shall ye return every man unto his possession which I have given you.21 And Joshua also I commanded at that time, saying, Thy own eyes have seen all that the Lord your God hath done unto these two kings: thus will the Lord do unto all the kingdoms whither thou passest.22 Ye shall not fear them; for the Lord your God it is who fighteth for you.23 And I besought the Lord at that time, saying,24 O Lord Eternal, thou hast begun to show thy servant thy greatness, and thy mighty hand; for what God is there in heaven or on earth, that can do aught like thy works, and like thy mighty deeds?25 Let me go over, I pray thee, that I may see the good land which is on the other side of the Jordan, this goodly mountain, and the Lebanon.26 But the Lord was wroth with me for your sakes, and he would not hear me: and the Lord said unto me, Let it suffice thee; do not continue to speak unto me any more of this matter.27 Get thee up unto the top of Pisgah, and lift up thy eyes, westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and behold it with thy eyes; for thou shalt not pass over this Jordan.28 And do thou charge Joshua, and strengthen him, and encourage him; for he shall go over before this people, and he shall divide out to them the land which thou shalt see.29 And we abode in the valley opposite Beth–peor.
