1 Quando o Senhor, teu Deus, te tiver introduzido na terra que vais possuir, e tiver despojado em teu favor muitas nações, os heteus, os gergeseus, os amorreus, os cananeus, os ferezeus, os heveus e os jebuseus, sete nações maiores e mais poderosas do que tu;2 quando o Senhor, teu Deus, as tiver entregado e tu as tiveres vencido, então as votarás ao interdito; não farás pacto algum com elas, nem as tratarás com misericórdia.3 Não contrairás com elas matrimônios: não darás tua filha a seus filhos, e não tomarás de suas filhas para teu filho,4 pois elas afastariam do Senhor o teu filho, que serviria a outros deuses; a cólera do Senhor se inflamaria contra ele e não tardaria a exterminar-vos.5 Mas eis como procedereis a seu respeito: destruireis seus altares, quebrareis suas estelas, cortareis suas asserás de madeira e queimareis suas imagens de escultura,6 porque és um povo consagrado ao Senhor, teu Deus, o qual te escolheu para seres o seu povo, sua propriedade exclusiva, entre todas as outras nações da terra.7 Não é porque sois mais numerosos que todos os outros povos que o Senhor se uniu a vós e vos escolheu; ao contrário, sois o menor de todos.8 Mas o Senhor ama-vos e quer guardar o juramento que fez a vossos pais. Por isso a sua mão poderosa tirou-vos da casa da servidão, e livrou-vos do poder do faraó, rei do Egito.9 Reconhece, pois, que o Senhor, teu Deus, é verdadeiramente Deus, um Deus fiel, que guarda a sua aliança e a sua misericórdia até a milésima geração para com aqueles que o amam e observam os seus mandamentos,10 mas castiga diretamente aqueles que o odeiam, exterminando-os, e infligindo sem demora o castigo direto àquele que o odeia.11 Observai, pois, as ordenações, as leis e os preceitos que vos prescrevo hoje, e praticai-os.12 Se ouvirdes esses preceitos e os praticardes fielmente, o Senhor, teu Deus, guardará para contigo a aliança de misericórdia que jurou a teus pais,13 amando-te, abençoando-te e multiplicando-te: abençoará o fruto de teu ventre e o fruto do teu solo, teu trigo, teu vinho e teu óleo, as crias de tuas vacas e de tuas ovelhas, na terra que jurou a teus pais dar-te.14 Serás bendito mais que todos os povos. Não haverá no meio de ti quem seja estéril, macho ou fêmea, tanto entre os homens como entre os animais.15 O Senhor apartará de ti toda a enfermidade; e não permitirá que te toque nenhuma daquelas funestas epidemias do Egito, que conheceste, mas ferirá com elas todos os que te odeiam.16 Devorarás todos os povos que o Senhor, teu Deus, te entregar; os teus olhos não terão piedade deles. Não servirás os seus deuses, porque isso te seria um laço.17 Se disseres no teu coração: estes povos são mais numerosos do que eu; como poderia eu despojá-los?18 Não os temas; lembra-te do que fez o Senhor, teu Deus, ao faraó e a todos os egípcios,19 das grandes provas que os teus olhos viram, dos sinais e dos prodígios que o Senhor fez quando te tirou do Egito com sua mão forte e seu braço poderoso. O mesmo fará ele a todos os povos que temes.20 O Senhor, teu Deus, enviará mesmo vespas contra eles, até destruir e exterminar todos os que tiverem escapado e se houverem ocultado de tua presença.21 Não te assustes por causa deles, porque tens o Senhor, teu Deus, no meio de ti, um Deus grande e temível.22 Ele expulsará pouco a pouco essas nações diante de ti; tu não as destruirás de uma só vez, para que não se multipliquem as feras ao redor de ti.23 O Senhor, teu Deus, as entregará a ti e semeará o pânico no meio delas até que todas sejam exterminadas.24 Entregará os seus reis nas tuas mãos, e tu apagarás os seus nomes de debaixo dos céus. Ninguém te poderá resistir, até que os tenhas derrotado.25 Queimareis as imagens esculpidas de seus deuses, mas não cobiçareis a prata nem o ouro de que são revestidas, nem delas tomareis nada, para que isso não te seja um laço, pois são uma abominação para o Senhor.26 Não introduzirás em tua casa coisa alguma abominável, porque serias, como ela, votado ao interdito. Tê-la-ás em extremo horror e grande abominação, porque é votada ao interdito.
1 When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Emorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations, greater in number and mightier than thou;2 And when the Lord thy God shall give them up before thee, and thou dost smite them: thou shalt utterly destroy them; thou shalt not make any covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them.3 Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughters shalt thou not give unto his son, and his daughter shalt thou not take unto thy son.4 For he would turn away thy son from following me, so that they might serve other gods; and the anger of the Lord would be kindled against you, and he would destroy thee speedily.5 But thus shall ye do unto them: their altars shall ye pull down, and their statues shall ye break, and their groves shall ye cut down, and their graven images shall ye burn with fire.6 For thou art a holy people unto the Lord thy God; of thee the Lord thy God hath made choice to be unto himself a special people, above all the nations that are upon the face of the earth.7 Not because ye are more in number than all the nations, did the Lord desire you and make choice of you; for ye are the fewest of all the nations;8 But on account of the love of the Lord for you, and because he keepeth the oath which he hath sworn unto your fathers, hath the Lord brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, out of the hand of Pharaoh the king of Egypt.9 Know then that the Eternal thy God, is the God, the faithful God, who keepeth the covenant and the mercy with those that love him and with those that keep his commandments to the thousandth generation;10 And repayeth those that hate him to their face, to destroy them; he will not delay to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.11 Therefore shalt thou keep the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command thee this day, to do them.12 And it shall come to pass in reward for that ye will hearken to these ordinances, and keep, and do them, that the Lord thy God will keep unto thee the covenant and the kindness which he hath sworn unto thy fathers:13 And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee; and he will bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thy oil, the increase of thy cattle, and the young of thy flocks, in the land which he hath sworn unto thy fathers to give unto thee.14 Blessed shalt thou be above all the nations; there shall not be a barren male or female among thee, nor among thy cattle.15 And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness; and all the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, will he not put upon thee; but he will lay them upon all those that hate thee.16 And thou shalt consume all the nations which the Lord thy God giveth unto thee; thy eye shall not look with pity upon them: and thou shalt not serve their gods; for that would be a snare unto thee.17 If thou shouldst say in thy heart, These nations are more numerous than I: how shall I be able to dispossess them?18 Thou shalt not be afraid of them; but thou shalt well remember what the Lord thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt;19 The great proofs which thy eyes have seen, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, whereby the Lord thy God brought thee out: in this wise will the Lord thy God do unto all the people of whom thou art afraid.20 Moreover the hornet will the Lord thy God send out against them, until they that are left, and hide themselves from thee, be destroyed.21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at them; for the Lord thy God is in the midst of thee, a mighty and terrible God.22 And the Lord thy God will chase out these nations before thee, little by little: thou shalt not be able to make an end of them speedily, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.23 And the Lord thy God will give them up before thee, and he will bring among them a mighty confusion, until they be destroyed.24 And he will give their kings into thy hand, and thou shalt destroy their name from under the heavens: no man shall be able to stand up before thee, until thou have destroyed them.25 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not covet the silver or gold that is on them, so that thou wouldst take it unto thyself, lest thou be ensnared thereby; for it is an abomination to the Lord thy God.26 And thou shalt not bring an abomination into thy house, lest thou become accursed like it: thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is accursed.
