1 Jó continuou seu discurso nestes termos:2 Quem me tornará tal como antes, nos dias em que Deus me protegia,3 quando a sua lâmpada luzia sobre a minha cabeça, e a sua luz me guiava nas trevas?4 Tal como eu era nos dias de meu outono, quando Deus velava como um amigo sobre minha tenda,5 quando o Todo-poderoso estava ainda comigo, e meus filhos em volta de mim;6 quando os meus pés se banhavam no creme, e o rochedo em mim derramava ondas de óleo;7 quando eu saía para ir à porta da cidade, e me assentava na praça pública?8 Viam-me os jovens e se escondiam, os velhos levantavam-se e ficavam de pé;9 os chefes interrompiam suas conversas, e punham a mão sobre a boca;10 calava-se a voz dos príncipes, a língua colava-se-lhes no céu da boca.11 Quem me ouvia felicitava-me, quem me via dava testemunho de mim.12 Livrava o pobre que pedia socorro, e o órfão que não tinha apoio.13 A bênção do que estava a perecer vinha sobre mim, e eu dava alegria ao coração da viúva.14 Revestia-me de justiça, e a eqüidade era para mim como uma roupa e um turbante.15 Era os olhos do cego e os pés daquele que manca;16 era um pai para os pobres, examinava a fundo a causa dos desconhecidos.17 Quebrava o queixo do perverso, e arrancava-lhe a presa de entre os dentes.18 Eu dizia: Morrerei em meu ninho, meus dias serão tão numerosos quanto os da fênix.19 Minha raiz atinge as águas, o orvalho ficará durante a noite sobre meus ramos.20 Minha glória será sempre jovem, e meu arco sempre forte em minha mão.21 Escutavam-me, esperavam, recolhiam em silêncio meu conselho;22 quando acabava de falar, não acrescentavam nada, minhas palavras eram recebidas como orvalho.23 Esperavam-me como a chuva e abriam a boca como se fosse para as águas da primavera.24 Sorria para aqueles que perdiam coragem; ante o meu ar benevolente, deixavam de estar abatidos.25 Quando eu ia ter com eles, tinha o primeiro lugar, era importante como um rei no meio de suas tropas, como o consolador dos aflitos.

1 And Job continued to take up his parable, and said,2 Who will give me back months like those which are past, days like those when God guarded me;3 When his lamp shone over my head, when by his light I could walk in darkness;4 As I was in the days of my abundance, when the confidence of God was upon my tent:5 When the Almighty was yet with me, when my servants stood round about me;6 When I bathed my steps in cream, and the rock poured out near me streamlets of oil!7 When I went out to the gate close by the city, when in the open place I established my seat:8 Young men saw me, and hid themselves; and the aged rose up, and remained standing;9 Princes stopped in the midst of their words, and laid their hand on their mouth:10 The voice of nobles was arrested, and their tongue cleaved to their palate.11 For the ear that heard me called me happy; and the eye that saw me bore witness for me;12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, yea, that had none to help him.13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me; and the heart of the widow I caused to sing for joy.14 I took righteousness as my garment, and it clothed me: as a robe and a mitre was justice unto me.15 Eyes was I to the blind; and feet to the lame was I.16 A father was I to the needy; and the cause of him I knew not I used to investigate.17 And I broke the cutting–teeth of the wrong–doer, and out of his teeth I cast down his prey.18 And I said then, "In the midst of my nest shall I depart hence, and like the sand shall I have many days.19 My root will stand open for the water, and the dew will lodge on my boughs.20 My glory will ever be new with me, and my bow will acquire fresh strength in my hand."21 Unto me men listened, and waited, and watched in silence for my counsel22 After my words they made no reply, and my speech dropped on them like dew.23 And they waited for me as for the rain, and they opened wide their mouth as for the latter rain.24 I smiled on those that had lost their confidence; and the light of my countenance they never cast down.25 I chose their way for them, and I sat as chief, and dwelt as king in his army, as one that comforteth mourners.
