1 Jó respondeu ao Senhor nestes termos:2 Sei que podes tudo, que nada te é muito difícil.3 Quem é que obscurece assim a Providência com discursos ininteligíveis? É por isso que falei, sem compreendê-las, maravilhas que me superam e que não conheço.4 Escuta-me, deixa-me falar: vou interrogar-te, tu me responderás.5 Meus ouvidos tinham escutado falar de ti, mas agora meus olhos te viram.6 É por isso que me retrato, e arrependo-me no pó e na cinza.7 Depois que o Senhor acabou de dirigir essas palavras a Jó, disse a Elifaz de Temã: Estou irritado contra ti e contra teus amigos, porque não falastes corretamente de mim, como Jó, meu servo.8 Procurai, pois, sete touros e sete carneiros, e vinde ter com meu servo Jó. Oferecei por vós este holocausto, e meu servo Jó intercederá por vós. É em consideração a ele que não vos infligirei ignomínias por não terdes falado bem de mim, como Jó, meu servo.9 Elifaz de Temã, Baldad de Sué e Sofar de Naamã foram-se então para fazer como o Senhor lhes tinha ordenado, e o Senhor tomou em consideração as orações de Jó.10 Enquanto Jó rezava por seus amigos, o Senhor o restabeleceu de novo em seu primeiro estado e lhe tornou em dobro tudo quanto tinha possuído.11 Todos os seus irmãos, todas as suas irmãs, todos os seus amigos de antigamente vieram visitá-lo e sentaram-se com ele à mesa em sua casa. Tiveram muito dó dele e deram-lhe condolências a respeito de todas as infelicidades que o Senhor lhe enviara; e cada um deles ofereceu-lhe uma peça de prata e um anel de ouro.12 O Senhor abençoou os últimos tempos de Jó mais do que os primeiros, e teve Jó quatorze mil ovelhas, seis mil camelos, mil juntas de bois e mil jumentas.13 Teve também sete filhos e três filhas:14 chamou a primeira Jêmina, a segunda Quetsia e a terceira Queren-Hapuc.15 Em toda a terra não poderiam ser encontradas mulheres mais belas do que as filhas de Jó. E seu pai lhes destinou uma parte da herança entre seus irmãos.16 Depois disso, Jó viveu ainda cento e quarenta anos, e conheceu até a quarta geração dos filhos de seus filhos.17 Depois, velho e cheio de dias, morreu.

1 Then answered Job unto the Lord, and said,2 I acknowledge that thou art able to do every thing, and that no deep plan of thine can be restrained.3 Who is he that dareth to conceal thy counsel without knowledge? Truly I have spoken of what I understood not, of things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.4 Oh do but hear me, and I will indeed speak: I will ask of thee, and do thou inform me.5 I had only heard of thee by the hearing of the ear; but now my eye hath seen thee.6 Therefore I reject what I have said, and repent; because I am dust and ashes.7 And it came to pass, after the Lord had spoken these words unto Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Themanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; because ye have not spoken of me properly, like my servant Job.8 And now take unto yourselves seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up a burnt–offering in your behalf; and my servant Job shall pray for you; for him alone will I receive favorably, so as not to deal with you after your folly; because ye have not spoken of me properly, like my servant Job.9 Then went Eliphaz the Themanite and Bildad the Shuchite and Zophar the Na’amathite, and did in accordance with what the Lord had spoken to them: and the Lord received Job in favor.10 And the Lord brought back the captivity of Job, when he prayed in behalf of his friends; and the Lord increased all that Job had had twofold.11 And then came unto him all his brothers, and all his sisters, and all that had been of his acquaintance before, and ate bread with him in his house; and they condoled with him, and comforted him for all the evil that the Lord had brought upon him; and they gave him, every one, a kessitah, and every one an earring of gold.12 And the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: and he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she–asses.13 He had also seven sons and three daughters.14 And he called the name of the first Jemimah; and the name of the second, Keziah; and the name of the third, Keren–happuch.15 And there were not found such handsome women as the daughters of Job in all the land; and their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers.16 And Job lived after this one hundred and forty years: and he saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations.17 Then died Job, being old and full of days.
