Jonas 4

1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. 2 He prayed to Yahweh, and said, "Please, Yahweh, wasn’t this what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and you relent of doing harm. 3 Therefore now, Yahweh, take, I beg you, my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live."

4 Yahweh said, "Is it right for you to be angry?"

5 Then Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city, and there made himself a booth and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city. 6 Yahweh God prepared a vine and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine. 7 But God prepared a worm at dawn the next day, and it chewed on the vine so that it withered. 8 When the sun arose, God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah’s head, so that he was faint and requested for himself that he might die. He said, "It is better for me to die than to live."

9 God said to Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the vine?"

He said, "I am right to be angry, even to death."

10 Yahweh said, "You have been concerned for the vine, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night and perished in a night. 11 Shouldn’t I be concerned for Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons who can’t discern between their right hand and their left hand, and also many animals?"

Nā reira ahau i rere wawe ai ki Tarahihi; i mōhio hoki ahau he Atua atawhai koe, he tohu tangata, he pūhoi ki te riri, he nui te aroha, e puta kē ana te whakaaro mō te kino. 3 Nā, tērā rā, e Ihowā, kia mate ahau āianei; he pai atu hoki i te ora te mate mōku."

4 Anō rā ko Ihowā, "He mea pai rānei kia riri koe?"

5 Nā, ka puta a Hona i roto i te pā, ā, noho ana i te taha ki te rāwhiti o te pā; kei te hanga i tētahi tīhokahoka mōna ki reira, noho ana i raro i te taumarumarunga iho, kia kite rā anō ka ahatia rānei te pā.

6 Nā, kua rite i a Ihowā tētahi hue, meinga ana e ia kia eke ki runga ki a Hona, hei whakamarumaru mō tōna māhunga, hei whakaora mōna i a ia i mamae rā. Nā, nui atu te koa o Hona ki te hue rā. 7 Nā, kua rite anō i te Atua he huhu i te aonga ake o te rā, ā, ngaua iho e tērā te hue, nā, kua maroke. 8 Nā, i te whitinga o te rā kua rite mai anō i te Atua tētahi hau pūmāhu, he marangai; āki tonu mai te rā ki runga ki te māhunga o Hona, whakaruhi noa iho, ā, īnoi ana mōna kia mate ia, i mea ia, "Pai atu i te ora te mate mōku."

9 Nā, ka mea te Atua ki a Hona, "He pai rānei kia riri koe ki te hue?"

Anō rā ko ia, "He pai anō kia riri ahau ā mate noa."

10 Anō rā ko Ihowā, "I manawapā koe ki te hue kīhai nā i mahia e koe, kīhai anō i whakatupuria e koe; kotahi anō te pō i tupu ake ai, kotahi anō te pō i kore ai. 11 Ā, kaua ianei ahau e manawapā ki Ninewe ki taua pā nui, he tokomaha nei ōna tāngata i ngā mano e ono tekau tōpū, he hunga kāhore nei e mōhio ki ō rātou ringa matau, ki ō rātou ringa mauī, he maha anō hoki ngā kararehe?"
