1 Now I would not have you ignorant, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2 and were all immersed into Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3 and all ate the same spiritual food; 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Messiah. 5 However with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 7 Don’t be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play." 8 Let’s not commit sexual immorality, as some of them committed, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell. 9 Let’s not test Messiah, as some of them tested, and perished by the serpents. 10 Don’t grumble, as some of them also grumbled, and perished by the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened to them by way of example, and they were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the ages have come. 12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands be careful that he doesn’t fall.
13 No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to wise men. Judge what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, isn’t it a sharing of the blood of Messiah? The bread which we break, isn’t it a sharing of the body of Messiah? 17 Because there is one loaf of bread, we, who are many, are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf of bread. 18 Consider Israel according to the flesh. Don’t those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?
19 What am I saying then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God, and I don’t desire that you would have fellowship with demons. 21 You can’t both drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You can’t both partake of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons. 22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
23 "All things are lawful for me," but not all things are profitable. "All things are lawful for me," but not all things build up. 24 Let no one seek his own, but each one his neighbor’s good. 25 Whatever is sold in the butcher shop, eat, asking no question for the sake of conscience, 26 for "the earth is the Lord’s, and its fullness." 27 But if one of those who don’t believe invites you to a meal, and you are inclined to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no questions for the sake of conscience. 28 But if anyone says to you, "This was offered to idols," don’t eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. For "the earth is the Lord’s, with all its fullness." 29 Conscience, I say, not your own, but the other’s conscience. For why is my liberty judged by another conscience? 30 If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced for something I give thanks for? 31 Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 Give no occasion for stumbling, whether to Jews, or to Greeks, or to the assembly of God; 33 even as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of the many, that they may be saved.
1 Porque não esqueçamos, irmãos, o que aconteceu aos nossos antepassados israelitas, no deserto, onde Deus os guiou, enviando uma nuvem que se movia à frente deles; e assim os conduziu com segurança através do Mar Vermelho.
2 Isto podia considerar-se o seu baptismo - um baptismo tanto na água como na nuvem - na qualidade de seguidores de Moisés.
3 E tiveram alimentos e bebida durante a sua travessia do deserto. Beberam da água que jorrou da rocha poderosa que era Cristo, o qual ali estava com eles, renovando-os espiritualmente.
5 E mesmo assim depois de tudo isto muitos não obtiveram a aprovação de Deus e foram destruídos no deserto.
6 A lição que daqui tiramos é que não devemos desejar coisas más, como eles fizeram, nem cair na idolatria, como alguns deles caíram. As Escrituras dizem-nos que o povo descansou a comer e a beber e depois pôs-se a dançar.
8 Outra lição para nós é o que aconteceu quando alguns deles pecaram com as mulheres de outro povo, e num só dia morreram 23.000.
9 E não ponham à prova a paciência do Senhor, como eles ousaram fazer, e pereceram mordidos por serpentes.
10 E não protestem contra Deus como alguns deles fizeram, porque foi por isso que Deus enviou o seu anjo e eles foram mortos.
11 Todas essas coisas que lhes aconteceram são para nós lições; e foram postas por escrito para nosso aviso, nós que vivemos nestes tempos em que todas as coisas convergem para o fim que se aproxima.
12 Por isso tenham cuidado. Se estão a pensar que estão firmes, olhem que podem também cair nos mesmos pecados.
13 Mas lembrem-se que as tentações que vêm às vossas vidas não são diferentes daquelas que outros experimentam. E Deus é fiel. Ele não deixará que a tentação seja tão forte que vocês não a possam enfrentar. Quando forem tentados, ele vai mostrar uma saída para que a possam suportar.
14 Por isso queridos amigos, fujam da idolatria.
15 Falo-vos como a pessoas que sabem entender as coisas. Vejam vocês mesmos se o que vou dizer-vos está certo ou não.
16 Quando pedimos a bênção de Deus sobre o vinho que tomamos na ceia do Senhor, isso significa que todos os que bebem dele partilham juntos da bênção do sangue de Cristo.
17 De igual forma, quando na mesma ocasião se reparte o pão para ser comido por todos, isso manifesta que participamos juntamente nos benefícios espirituais do corpo de Cristo. E todos comemos do mesmo pão, mostrando assim que somos parte do corpo único de Cristo.
18 O mesmo acontecia com o povo de Israel; todos os que comiam dos sacrifícios oferecidos ao Senhor estavam unidos por esse mesmo acto.
19 Que quero eu então dizer com isto? É que os ídolos não têm em si vida alguma, não são realmente deuses nenhuns, e que os sacrifícios que lhes são trazidos não têm valor algum.
20 Contudo esses sacrifícios são oferecidos aos demónios e não a Deus. E eu não queria que algum de vocês tivesse qualquer espécie de comunhão com os demónios.
21 Não podem beber, ao mesmo tempo, na ceia do Senhor e na mesa dos demónios. Não podem comer o pão da mesa do Senhor, e depois ir tomar da comida dos demónios.
22 Pois quê? Iríamos nós levar o Senhor a irritar-se contra nós como Israel fez? Pensamos nós que poderíamos teimar com ele?
23 Podem dizer: Tudo me é permitido , mas nem tudo convém. Tudo me é permitido , mas nem tudo é bom para a minha formação.
24 E não procurem unicamente as vossas conveniências. Pensem também no que é o melhor para os outros.
25 Portanto devem fazer assim: no mercado, levem de qualquer carne que ali esteja a ser vendida, e sem perguntar se foi ou não consagrada aos ídolos, para que não se levantem escrúpulos na vossa consciência.
26 Porque a terra toda e tudo o que nela há pertence ao Senhor.
27 Se alguém que não é cristão vos convida a comer, podem muito bem aceitar se assim o desejarem. E então comam de tudo o que for servido, sem levantar questões sobre isso, para evitar que a vossa consciência seja perturbada.
28 Mas se alguém vos avisar que essa carne foi consagrada a um ídolo, então nesse caso não a comam, mas isso mais por causa da pessoa que vos avisou e da consciência dela.
29 Porque nessa altura o que está em causa não é o que vocês pensam mas o que ela pode pensar do assunto.
30 Mas alguém poderá perguntar: Se eu posso dar graças a Deus por esse alimento, por que hei-de eu deixar que alguém me venha perturbar só porque julga que estou errado?
31 É porque tudo o que fazemos deve ser para a glória de Deus, mesmo o comer ou o beber.
32 E assim não sejam vocês um meio de fazer tropeçar o vosso próximo, seja ele judeu, gentio ou cristão.
33 É assim que eu faço também. Procuro agradar a toda a gente naquilo que faço, não actuando segundo o que mais me agrada, mas segundo o que mais convém aos outros, a fim de que sejam salvos.
