Tiago 3

1 My brethren, be not many teachers, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. Atyámfiai, ne legyetek sokan tanítók, tudván azt, hogy súlyosabb ítéletünk lészen.
2 For in many things we all offend. If any man offendeth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. Mert mindnyájan sokképen vétkezünk. Ha valaki beszédben nem vétkezik, az tökéletes ember, képes az egész testét is megzabolázni.
3 Behold, we put bits in the mouths of horses, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Ímé a lovaknak szájába zabolát vetünk, hogy engedelmeskedjenek nékünk, és az õ egész testöket igazgatjuk.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they are so great, and are driven by fierce winds, yet they are turned about with a very small helm, withersoever the governor willeth. Ímé a hajók is, noha mily nagyok, és erõs szelektõl hajtatnak, mindazáltal igen kis kormánytól oda fordíttatnak, a hová a kormányos szándéka akarja.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! Ezenképen a nyelv is kicsiny tag és nagy dolgokkal hányja magát. Ímé csekély tûz mily nagy erdõt felgyújt!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire from hell. A nyelv is tûz, a gonoszságnak összessége. Úgy van a nyelv a mi tagjaink között, hogy megszeplõsíti az egész testet, és lángba borítja élet[ünk] folyását, [maga] is lángba boríttatván a gyehennától.
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of animals in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind: Mert minden természet, vadállatoké, madaraké, csúszómászóké és vízieké megszelídíthetõ és meg is szelidíttetett az emberi természet által:
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. De a nyelvet az emberek közül senki sem szelidítheti meg; fékezhetetlen gonosz az, halálos méreggel teljes.
9 With this we bless God, even the Father; and with this we curse men, who are made after the similitude of God. Ezzel áldjuk az Istent és Atyát, és ezzel átkozzuk az embereket, a kik az Isten hasonlatosságára teremttettek:
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Ugyanabból a szájból jõ ki áldás és átok. Atyámfiai, nem kellene ezeknek így lenni!
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Vajjon a forrás ugyan abból a nyílásból csörgedeztet-é édest és keserût?
12 Can the fig-tree, my brethren, bear olive-berries? or a vine, figs? so no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh. Avagy atyámfiai, teremhet-é a fügefa olajmagvakat, vagy a szõlõtõ fügét? Azonképen egy forrás sem adhat sós és édes vizet.
13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show by a good deportment his works with meekness of wisdom. Kicsoda köztetek bölcs és okos? Mutassa meg az õ jó életébõl az õ cselekedeteit bölcsességnek szelídségével.
14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. Ha pedig keserû irígység és czivódás van a ti szívetekben, ne dicsekedjetek és ne hazudjatok az igazság ellen.
15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, demoniacal. Ez nem az a bölcsesség, a mely felülrõl jõ, hanem földi, testi és ördögi.
16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. Mert a hol irígység és czivakodás [van], ott háborúság és minden gonosz cselekedet is [van.]
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. A felülrõl való bölcsesség pedig elõször is tiszta, azután békeszeretõ, méltányos, engedelmes, irgalmassággal és jó gyümölcsökkel teljes, nem kételkedõ és nem képmutató.
18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by them that make peace. Az igazság gyümölcse pedig békességben vettetik azoknak, a kik békességesen munkálkodnak.
