1 Era Amazias da idade de vinte e cinco anos, quando começou a reinar, e reinou vinte e nove anos em Jerusalém; e era o nome de sua mãe Joadã, de Jerusalém.2 E fez o que era reto aos olhos do Senhor, porém não com inteireza de coração.3 Sucedeu que, sendo-lhe o reino já confirmado, matou a seus servos que mataram o rei seu pai;4 Porém não matou os filhos deles; mas fez segundo está escrito na lei, no livro de Moisés, como o Senhor ordenou, dizendo: Não morrerão os pais pelos filhos, nem os filhos pelos pais; mas cada um morrerá pelo seu pecado.5 E Amazias reuniu a Judá e os pôs segundo as casas dos pais, sob capitães de milhares, e sob capitães de cem, por todo o Judá e Benjamim; e os contou, de vinte anos para cima, e achou deles trezentos mil escolhidos que podiam sair à guerra, e manejar lança e escudo.6 Também de Israel tomou a soldo cem mil homens valentes, por cem talentos de prata.7 Porém um homem de Deus veio a ele, dizendo: Ó rei, não deixes ir contigo o exército de Israel; porque o Senhor não é com Israel, a saber com os filhos de Efraim.8 Se quiseres ir, faze-o assim, esforça-te para a peleja. Deus, porém, te fará cair diante do inimigo; porque força há em Deus para ajudar e para fazer cair.9 E disse Amazias ao homem de Deus: Que se fará, pois, dos cem talentos de prata que dei às tropas de Israel? E disse o homem de Deus: Mais tem o Senhor que te dar do que isso.10 Então separou Amazias as tropas que lhe tinham vindo de Efraim, para que se fossem ao seu lugar; por isso se acendeu a sua ira contra Judá, e voltaram para as suas casas ardendo em ira.11 Esforçou-se, pois, Amazias, e conduziu o seu povo, e foi ao Vale do Sal; onde feriu a dez mil dos filhos de Seir.12 Também os filhos de Judá prenderam vivos dez mil, e os levaram ao cume da rocha; e do mais alto da rocha os lançaram abaixo, e todos se despedaçaram.13 Porém os homens das tropas que Amazias despedira, para que não fossem com ele à peleja, deram sobre as cidades de Judá desde Samaria, até Bete-Horom; e feriram deles três mil, e saquearam grande despojo.14 E sucedeu que, depois que Amazias veio da matança dos edomitas e trouxe consigo os deuses dos filhos de Seir, tomou-os por seus deuses, e prostrou-se diante deles, e queimou-lhes incenso.15 Então a ira do Senhor se acendeu contra Amazias, e mandou-lhe um profeta que lhe disse: Por que buscaste deuses deste povo, os quais não livraram o seu próprio povo da tua mão?16 E sucedeu que, falando ele ao rei, este lhe respondeu: Puseram-te por conselheiro do rei? Cala-te! Por que haveria de ser ferido? Então parou o profeta, e disse: Bem vejo eu que já Deus deliberou destruir-te; porquanto fizeste isto, e não deste ouvidos ao meu conselho.17 E, tendo tomado conselho, Amazias, rei de Judá, mandou dizer a Jeoás, filho de Jeoacaz, filho de Jeú, rei de Israel: Vem, vejamo-nos face a face.18 Porém Jeoás, rei de Israel, mandou dizer a Amazias, rei de Judá: O cardo que estava no Líbano mandou dizer ao cedro que estava no Líbano: Dá tua filha por mulher a meu filho; porém os animais do campo, que estavam no Líbano passaram e pisaram o cardo.19 Tu dizes: Eis que tenho ferido os edomitas; e elevou-se o teu coração, para te gloriares; agora, pois, fica em tua casa; por que te entremeterias no mal, para caíres tu e Judá contigo?20 Porém Amazias não lhe deu ouvidos, porque isto vinha de Deus, para entregá-los na mão dos seus inimigos; porquanto buscaram os deuses dos edomitas.21 E Jeoás, rei de Israel, subiu; e ele e Amazias, rei de Judá, viram-se face a face em Bete-Semes, que está em Judá.22 E Judá foi ferido diante de Israel; e fugiu cada um para a sua tenda.23 E Jeoás, rei de Israel, prendeu a Amazias, rei de Judá, filho de Joás, o filho de Jeoacaz, em Bete-Semes, e o trouxe a Jerusalém; e derrubou o muro de Jerusalém, desde a porta de Efraim até à porta da esquina, quatrocentos côvados.24 Também tomou todo o ouro, a prata, e todos os utensílios que se acharam na casa de Deus com Obede-Edom, e os tesouros da casa do rei, e os reféns; e voltou para Samaria.25 E viveu Amazias, filho de Joás, rei de Judá, depois da morte de Jeoás, filho de Jeoacaz, rei de Israel, quinze anos.26 Quanto ao mais dos atos de Amazias, tanto os primeiros como os últimos, eis que, porventura, não estão escritos no livro dos reis de Judá e de Israel?27 E desde o tempo em que Amazias se desviou do Senhor, conspiraram contra ele em Jerusalém, porém ele fugiu para Laquis; mas perseguiram-no até Laquis, e o mataram ali.28 E trouxeram-no sobre cavalos e sepultaram-no com seus pais na cidade de Judá.

1 When twenty and five years old did Amazyahu become king, and twenty and nine years did he reign in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Yeho’addan of Jerusalem.2 And he did what is right in the eyes of the Lord, yet not with an entire heart.3 And it came to pass, when the kingdom was firmly established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father.4 But their children he put not to death; but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, that the Lord had commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, nor shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.5 And Amazyahu gathered Judah together, and stationed them after the family divisions, after the captains over the thousands, and after the captains over the hundreds, of all Judah and Benjamin; and he numbered them from twenty years old and upward, and found them to be three hundred thousand chosen men, able to go forth to the army, that could handle spear and shield.6 He hired also out of Israel one hundred thousand mighty men of valor for one hundred talents of silver.7 But a man of God came unto him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the Lord is not with Israel, with all the children of Ephraim.8 But if thou wilt go, and be ever so active and strong for the battle: God will cause thee to stumble before the enemy; for there is power with God to help, and to cause to stumble.9 Then said Amazyahu to the man of God, But what is it to be done for the hundred talents which I have given to the band of Israel? And the man of God said, The Lord hath enough in his power to give thee much more than this.10 Then did Amazyahu separate them, to wit, the band that was come to him out of Ephraim, that they might go to their place: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned to their home in burning anger.11 And Amazyahu strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the Valley of Salt, and smote of the children of Se’ir ten thousand men.12 And ten thousand did the children of Judah take captive alive, and brought them to the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, so that they all were crushed.13 But the men of the band whom Amazyahu had sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, spread themselves about in the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth–choron, and smote of them three thousand persons, and plundered much spoil.14 And it came to pass, after Amazyahu was come home from smiting the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Se’ir, and set them up unto himself as gods, and before them he used to prostrate himself and unto them he used to burn incense.15 Wherefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Amazyahu, and he sent unto him a prophet, who said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, that have not delivered their own people out of thy hand?16 And it came to pass, as he was speaking unto him, that he said unto him, Have we ever appointed thee as a counsellor to the king? forbear this: why shouldst thou be smitten? Then did the prophet forbear; and he said, I know that God hath resolved to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.17 Then held Amazyahu the king of Judah a council, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoachaz, the son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face.18 And Joash the king of Israel sent to Amazyahu the king of Judah, saying, The thorn–bush that was in the Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in the Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son for wife. And there passed along the wild beasts that were in the Lebanon, and trod down the thorn–bush.19 Thou hast thought, Lo, thou hast smitten Edom; and thy heart hath lifted thee up to acquire much glory: now stay in thy house; why wilt thou meddle with misfortune, that thou mayest fall, thou, and Judah with thee?20 But Amazyahu would not hear; for it was ordained by God, in order to deliver them into the hand of Joash; because they had sought after the gods of Edom.21 Thereupon did Joash the king of Israel go up: and they looked one another in the face, he and Amazyahu the king of Judah, at Beth–shemesh, which belongeth to Judah.22 And Judah was defeated before Israel, and they fled every man to his tents.23 And Joash the king of Israel caught Amazyahu the king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoachaz, at Beth–shemesh; and he brought him to Jerusalem, and made a breach in the wall of Jerusalem, from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner–gate, four hundred cubits.24 And taking all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with ‘Obed–edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, and the children of the chiefs as hostages, he returned to Samaria.25 And Amazyahu the son of Joash the king of Judah lived after the death of Joash the son of Jehoachaz the king of Israel fifteen years.26 And the rest of the acts of Amazyahu the first and the last, behold, they are fully written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.27 Now from the time that Amazyahu departed from following the Lord, they raised a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem: wherefore he fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there.28 And they carried him on horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
