Wisdom 14

1 Outro, por sua vez, que quer navegar e se prepara para atravessar as impetuosas ondas, invoca um madeiro de pior qualidade que o navio que o leva;

2 porque o desejo do lucro inventou o navio, e uma hábil sabedoria dirigiu sua construção.

3 Mas sois vós, Pai, que o governais pela vossa Providência, porque, se abristes caminho, mesmo no mar, e uma rota segura no meio das ondas –

4 mostrando por aí que vós podeis tirar do perigo aquele que as afronta mesmo sem meios –,

5 quereis, entretanto, que não sejam inúteis as obras de vossa sabedoria. Por isso, os homens confiam a própria vida a um pouco de madeira e atravessam em segurança as ondas num navio.

6 Assim, com efeito, quando na origem dos tempos fizestes perecer gigantes orgulhosos, a esperança do universo, refugiando-se num barco, que vossa mão governava, conservou para o mundo o germe de uma geração.

7 Porque é bendito o madeiro pelo qual se opera a justiça,

8 mas maldito é o ídolo, ele e o que o fez; este porque o formou, aquele porque, sendo corruptível, leva o nome de deus.

9 Com efeito, Deus odeia tanto o ímpio quanto sua impiedade,

10 e a obra sofrerá o mesmo castigo que o autor.

11 Este é o motivo por que também os ídolos das nações serão julgados: na criação de Deus, eles se tornaram uma abominação, objetos de escândalo para os homens, e laços para os pés dos insensatos.

12 Foi pela idealização dos ídolos que começou a apostasia, e sua invenção foi a perda dos humanos.

13 Eles não existiam no princípio e não durarão para sempre;

14 a vaidade dos homens os introduziu no mundo. E, por causa disso, Deus decidiu a sua destruição para breve.

15 Um pai aflito por um luto prematuro, tendo mandado fazer a imagem do filho, tão cedo arrebatado, honrou, em seguida, como a um deus aquele que não passava de um morto, e transmitiu aos seus certos ritos secretos e cerimônias.

16 Este costume ímpio, tendo-se firmado com o tempo, foi depois observado como lei.

17 Foi também em consequência das ordens dos príncipes que se adoraram imagens esculpidas, porque aqueles que não podiam honrar pessoalmente, porque moravam longe deles, fizeram representar o que se achava distante, e expuseram publicamente a imagem do rei venerado, a fim de lisonjeá-lo de longe com seu zelo, como se estivesse presente.

18 Isto contribuiu ainda para o estabelecimento deste culto, mesmo entre os que não conheciam o rei; foi a ambição do artista

19 que, talvez, querendo agradar ao soberano, deu-lhe, por sua arte, a semelhança do belo;

20 e a multidão, seduzida pelo encanto da obra, em breve tomou por deus aquele que tinham honrado como homem.

21 E isto foi uma cilada para a humanidade: os homens, sujeitando-se à lei da desgraça e da tirania, deram à pedra e à madeira o nome incomunicável.

22 Como se não bastasse terem errado acerca do conhecimento de Deus, embora passando a vida numa longa luta de ignorância, eles dão o nome de paz a um estado tão infeliz.

23 Com efeito, sacrificando seus filhos, celebrando mistérios ocultos, ou entregando-se a orgias desenfreadas de religiões exóticas,

24 eles já não guardam a honestidade nem na vida nem no casamento, mas um faz desaparecer o outro pelo ardil, ou o ultraja pelo adultério.

25 Tudo está numa confusão completa – sangue, homicídio, furto, fraude, corrupção, deslealdade, revolta, perjúrio,

26 perseguição dos bons, esquecimento dos benefícios, contaminação das almas, perversão dos sexos, instabilidade das uniões, adultérios e impudicícias –

27 porque o culto de inomináveis ídolos é o começo, a causa e o fim de todo o mal.

28 (Seus adeptos) incitam o prazer até a loucura, ou fazem vaticínios falsos, ou vivem na injustiça, ou, sem escrúpulo, juram falso,

29 porque, confiando em ídolos inanimados, esperam não ser punidos por má-fé.

30 Contudo, o castigo os atingirá por duplo motivo: porque eles desconheceram a Deus, afeiçoando-se aos ídolos, e porque são culpados, por desprezo à santidade da religião, de ter feito juramentos enganadores.

31 Pois não é o poder dos ídolos invocados, mas o castigo reservado ao pecador, que sempre persegue as faltas dos maus.

1 Again, one preparing to sail, and about to journey over raging waves,

calls upon a piece of wood more fragile than the vessel that carries him.

2 For the hunger for profit planned it,

and wisdom was the craftsman who built it.

3 Your providence, O Father, guides it along,

because even in the sea you gave a way,

and in the waves a sure path,

4 showing that you can save out of every danger,

that even a man without skill may put to sea.

5 It is your will that the works of your wisdom should not be ineffective.

Therefore men also entrust their lives to a little piece of wood,

and passing through the surge on a raft come safely to land.

the hope of the world, taking refuge on a raft,

your hand guided the seed of generations of the race of men.

7 For blessed is wood through which comes righteousness;

8 but the idol made with hands is accursed, itself and he that made it;

because his was the working, and the corruptible thing was called a god.

9 For both the ungodly and his ungodliness are alike hateful to God;

10 for truly the deed will be punished together with him who committed it.

11 Therefore also there will be a visitation among the idols of the nation,

because, though formed of things which God created, they were made an abomination,

stumbling blocks to the souls of men,

and a snare to the feet of the foolish.

12 For the devising of idols was the beginning of fornication,

and the invention of them the corruption of life.

13 For they didn’t exist from the beginning, and they won’t exist forever.

14 For by the boastfulness of men they entered into the world,

and therefore a speedy end was planned for them.

15 For a father worn with untimely grief,

making an image of the child quickly taken away,

now honored him as a god which was then a dead human being,

and delivered to those that were under him mysteries and solemn rites.

16 Afterward the ungodly custom, in process of time grown strong, was kept as a law,

and the engraved images received worship by the commandments of princes.

17 And when men could not honor them in presence because they lived far off,

imagining the likeness from afar,

they made a visible image of the king whom they honored,

that by their zeal they might flatter the absent as if present.

18 But worship was raised to a yet higher pitch, even by those who didn’t know him,

urged forward by the ambition of the architect;

19 for he, wishing perhaps to please his ruler,

used his art to force the likeness toward a greater beauty.

20 So the multitude, allured by reason of the grace of his handiwork,

now consider an object of devotion him that a little before was honored as a man.

21 And this became an ambush,

because men, in bondage either to calamity or to tyranny,

invested stones and stocks with the Name that shouldn’t be shared.

22 Afterward it was not enough for them to go astray concerning the knowledge of God,

but also, while they live in a great war of ignorance, they call a multitude of evils peace.

23 For either slaughtering children in solemn rites, or celebrating secret mysteries,

or holding frenzied revels of strange customs,

24 no longer do they guard either life or purity of marriage,

but one brings upon another either death by treachery, or anguish by adultery.

25 And all things confusedly are filled with blood and murder, theft and deceit,

corruption, faithlessness, tumult, perjury,

26 confusion about what is good, forgetfulness of favors,

ingratitude for benefits,

defiling of souls, confusion of sex,

disorder in marriage, adultery and wantonness.

27 For the worship of idols that may not be named ✝14:27 Exodus 23:13; Psalms 16:4; Hosea 2:17; Wisdom 14:21

is a beginning and cause and end of every evil.

28 For their worshipers either make merry to madness, or prophesy lies,

or live unrighteously, or lightly commit perjury.

29 For putting their trust in lifeless idols,

when they have sworn a wicked oath, they expect not to suffer harm.

30 But on both counts, the just doom will pursue them,

because they had evil thoughts of God by giving heed to idols,

and swore unrighteously in deceit through contempt for holiness.

31 For it is not the power of things by which men swear,

but it is the just penalty for those who sin

that always visits the transgression of the unrighteous.
